The Beautiful Game has its fair share of legends in India, from the likes of IM Vijayan and Baichung Bhutia to the likes of Sunil Chettri, Indian footballing legends today, are kept in the shadows. Born in Arunachal Pradesh on 1st September 1942, this is the story of Chow Indrajit Namchoom,who is often regarded as ‘The pathfinder in sports’ .
Back in those times, Arunachal Pradesh was fighting for independence similar like the rest of the nation. In a war-torn and disfigured state, Chow did not have an easy-going childhood. Belonging to the Khamti Tribe, Chow went to Guwahati to study in Don Bosco School, wherein he completed his matriculation in 1960. Later he would join the prestigious Cotton College situated in Guwahati, where he would have his first experiences with football.
Cotton College played a crucial role and infused Chow with football, a sport he would so long for in the years to come. His three years with Cotton, introduced him to the beautiful game. Like a fish to water, Chow took to Football, he was a natural at it. It was god gifted footballing talent that got discovered and meteorically, within a short span of 3 years after his introduction to the game, he played the most prestigious tournaments even to this dates, the Santosh Trophy.
Consequently his story of together in life with football began. For 8 years between 1960 and 1968, Chow played club football in NEFA ( now Arunachal Pradesh), tying his loyalties to one of the best football clubs of that era, Guwahati Town Club. His stroke of genius and masterclass was for all to see, as he subsequently got selected for two International Championships, held in Saigon, Vietnam and Malaysia.
India would go on to finish seventh in a group of eight in Saigon, but the first signs of budding in football were already there. Moreover Chow often terrorized the foreign defenses, leading India to a draw with Malaysia and Vietnam but a disappointing defeat against Burma. Doning the number 7 jersey it was a fairy tale manifested true for Chow, hailing from the unknown NEFA.
As a player Namchoom captivated the hearts of man. Apart from his imposing physical presence, Ariel ability and leadership quality, Chow was also injected with acceleration never seen before in the Indian Sub continent. His Fancy footwork and passing sense similar to a play maker made him ideal as a platform to release other player on goal. His Killer instinct and lethal shots made him a fearful striker. Quick and nimble with a small powerful frame, Chow operated between the line of defense, he would either play the target man or drop deep to receive the ball and aim for glory.
For Namchoom, in those days the paradigm was completely different and football was not a lucrative career option as it is today. Analysis the options in life, Chow opted for a more realistic career, Bureaucracy. But sports and especially football would always remain his priority as he would go on to be the first sportsperson to handle Sports Ministry under Chief Minister Gegong Apang.
After a long span of illness, Chow passed away in Kolkata on 24th October 2013, yet his legacy would live on for ages. Chow was the first ever sportsperson from Arunachal Pradesh to represent India in Football, and perhaps he was the first from Arunachal Pradesh to represent India in any sporting event. His chequered career across different fields capture his true essence, an explorer with a never-say-die attitude. It can be safe to say that Chow along with others, put the unknown region of North East India on the Global Football Map, a region which would go on to produce legends such as Baichung Bhutia and Sunil Chettri.
Namchoom achieved many things in his glorious life. A career in football to bureaucracy and then to politics, he has accomplished it all. All in all, he might have lost some battles in life, but has won the war of life with unquestioned courage and sheer determination. A Sporting Icon, long lost in the annals of time, Chow Indrajit Namchoom will always represent the definition of legend who graced football with his talent and class.
Perhaps, sensing the amount of dedication and football fever in the North East, John Abraham stuck gold by forming a franchisee from there. “We are United, We are Eight” explains the basic concept of life in the hills, to stand united, a feature constantly displayed by Namchoom added with humility, over the course of his illustrious career.
