There is one thing that Brazilians do better than the rest of the world- play free-flowing attacking football. Every half-decent football league is graced by Brazilian wizards, weaving their magic on the pitch. The Indian Super League is no exception. Attackers from the South American nation have been the standout performers for their teams, having scored 20 out of the 88 goals scored so far.
Chennaiyin FC fans were heart broken when footballing God Ronaldinho decided to give the ISL a miss and signed for QuerAi??taro of the Mexican League. All that is a thing of the past, though. His replacement and one time international teammate, Elano Blumer, is the reason why the sidefrom the South is currently top of the table!
Playing as a central attacking midfielder under Marco Materazzi, Elano is the play maker whose job is to make things happen around him. He dances past defenders with his mazy dribbling and plays through balls into speedy forwards Stiven Mendoza and Balwant Singh. The dead-ball specialist has already curled in 4 free kicks and leads the scoring charts with 8 goals.
Andre Moritz is another Brazilian playmaker scoring goals and winning Indian hearts. The ex-Crystal Palace fan favourite scored the league’s first hat trick against Pune City FC. He is the focal point of Mumbai City FC’s attack and offers great versatility, dropping deep to keep possessionAi??or bursting into the box to become a second striker.
The team with the strongest Brazilian connection, however, is FC Goa. Lead by the trio of legendary Brazilian coach Zico, ex-Arsenal wide man Andre Santos and talented forward Pedro Gusmao, they play the same attractive, attacking game that makes the nation of Brazil almost synonymous with the sport. More shots on goal and corner kicks earned than any other team in the league are testimony to this.
Zico is the perfect man for the job, having lead another football revolution from the start as a player and then as a manager- the J-League in Japan started in 1993. The ex-Kashima Antlers and Japanese national team manager saw the country transform from a nation without a professional league to an Asian powerhouse and a regular at the World Cups in the space of five years. He has repeatedly voiced his opinion that the ISL model is far from perfect if India are to rise up the world rankings-
“I think playing too many foreigners in the ISL is not good as it will not help much in the development of Indian football. It will not give more exposure to Indian players to play alongside the foreigners”
“I think the difference with Japan was that they did not bring in more foreign players which helped them to develop their talent.”
The organizers must take note- a man of Zico’s experience knows what he is talking about. He has often blasted the 5 Indians in the starting 11 rule and opined that the main aim of the league seems to be making money, not developing the sport. How true his proclamation is can only be decided when the Indian national team takes to the pitch in their next match against Oman on 27th December.
Another interesting aspect to the Brazilian story is the tie up between the All India Football Federation(AIFF) and Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense in a bid to to promote football in India and build up to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2016. It is no surprise that Paranaense have loaned 5 of their brightest youngsters to the ISL, adding Brazilian flair to the league.
Erwin Spitzner (Defender, Kerala Blasters), Felipe de Castro (Midfielder for North East United), Bruno Pelissari (Midfielder, Chennaiyin), Gustavo Dos Santos (Attacker, Delhi Dynamos) and Pedro Gusmao (Attacker, FC Goa) are all aged less than 22 and are making a name for themselves with their talent and technical ability.
With match winning performances and exceptional goals in their last matches, both Dos Santos and Pelissari are now in the lime light. Dos Santos faces the monumental task of replacing an off-colour Alessandro Del Piero as the Dynamos’ main attacker and lifting them into a semi-final berth. Having been used as a super-sub until now, he scored an outrageous goal and provided an assist against North East United to hand Delhi their first win in 7 matches. His ability to run at the defence and cut in from the right onto his deadly left foot has been his greatest asset.
Meanwhile, Chennaiyin FC were cursing their luck when news emerged that Elano was facing an injury layoff, but the emergence of Pelissari might give the team a breath of fresh air. While Elano’s guile in midfield and pin-point accuracy from set pieces were missed, coach Materazzi appeared pleased that the reserves filled in so effectively in the 3-0 drubbing of Mumbai City FC.
Pelissari might not have Elano’s vision or experience, but he has a turn of pace very reminiscent of Ricardo Kaka in his glory days, and the confidence to go for goal from 25 to 30 yards out. Often picking the ball up deep in midfield, Pelissari drove at the Mumbai defence and wreaked havoc! He lacked the composure to finish more than once, but showed his coach that he offers something new to the side.
Maybe injury or loss of form for the marquee men is not such a bad thing- it has lead to the discovery of two exciting but raw talents that can turn matches on their heads.Whatever happens, this group of players have produced some of the most exciting football ever seen on the subcontinent and it is fair to say that they have brought the party to the Super League.
