It has been a long wait for Royal Wahingdoh in their search for I-League football. Having come close once previously, the Maroons finally buried the ghosts of 2012 on Friday when they beat Bhawanipore FC in the most dramatic fashion to Ai??book their ticket to the 2014-15 edition of the Airtel I-League.
Royal Wahingdoh have been the most successful club in Shillongai??i??s local football circuit in recent years. The club, which was founded as an amateur side with the name of Wahingdoh Sports Club less than seven decades ago, has lifted the Shillong Premier League three times consecutively from 2010 to 2012. The transition into a proper professional outfit took place in 2008, when they merged with Royal Football Club to become Royal Wahingdoh FC. Having dominated in the local football scene since then, the Maroons have clearly established their status as one of the best sides in the North Eastern region. The club has, however, not enjoyed similar fortunes in the national circuit, until very recently. The Shillong-based side has often come into the 2nd Division League as the firm favorites in recent years, but has never quite succeeded in making the I-League grade. The former Shillong Premier League champions once again entered this seasonai??i??s 2nd tier league as the favorites to make it into next seasonai??i??s top flight. Having overcome the tough preliminary rounds, they were once again expected to finally clinch the promotion slot.
With the 2nd Division League involving a lower pool of clubs this term, only 4 teams made it into the Final Rounds of the league via the qualifying rounds, while United Sikkimai??i??s participation was already guaranteed thanks to their relegation from I-League last season. Bhawanipore FC comfortably booked their place in the final round, whereas Delhiai??i??s Hindustan FC were the surprise qualifiers from the first round, having pipped Eagles FC to one of the spots in the final round. Kalighat MS made it to the final stages from the same group as Royal Wahingdoh, and were the dark horses coming into Silchar. However, very few expected a club other than Bhawanipore or Royal Wahingdoh to challenge for the sole promotion spot, and that is exactly how things turned out.

However, much to the chagrin of the fans in the stadium, Bhawanipore started the game brightly and took the lead through Daniel Bidemi in the 25th minute. Jackichand Singh gave Royal Wahingdoh some hope when he scored in the 37th minute to level up the scores. Ten minutes into the 2nd half, Babtunde sent the crowd into ruptures when he gave Royal Wahingdoh the lead with a well-taken goal. However, the forward was stretchered off the ground a few minutes after scoring as he hurt himself after an awkward fall. Bhawanipore struck back in the 75th minute through Daniel Bidemi, and things were suddenly looking bleak for Royal Wahingdoh. The stage seemed set to give Bhawaniporeai??i??s Jose Ramires Barreto the perfect farewell, as he took his final bow from professional football. Royal Wahingdoh stepped up their search for a winner in the final few minutes, and with three minutes to go in the game, the Shillong-based side lodged a dagger into Bhawaniporeai??i??s heart when they took the lead through Bekay Bawar. Wild celebration ensued in the crowd after the goal, and the Maroons managed to hold on to their lead to seal their qualification to the I-League.
Royal Wahingdohai??i??s 2nd Division triumph means that the club will become the third side from Shillong to play in the I-League. The Nanda Kumar Singh-coached side remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, and their qualification meant that Bhawanipore suffered a second consecutive heartbreak in the 2nd Division League, after last yearai??i??s near-miss. From the I-Leagueai??i??s perspective, however, Wahingdohai??i??s promotion bodes well for the league, with the Shillong club boasting of a strong fan base. After missing out on promotion in the last few seasons, Wahingdohai??i??s triumph will come as a major relief to the club management, who have been extremely professional in taking the club forward in recent years. Their promotion shows that hard work and perseverance does pay dividends in Indian football. Bhawanipore will, however, be left to lick their wounds after agonizingly missing out on promotion once again. Only a single I-League spot was made available in this seasonai??i??s beleaguered 2nd Division League, and the Kolkata club will be left to spend at least another year in the 2nd tier despite fully deserving to make the I-League grade.
