At AS Roma, there once was a golden generation of Gabriel Batistuta, Cafu, Vincent Candela, Emerson and Vincenzo Montella, along with young guns Francesco Totti and Walter Samuel, who captured the title under Fabio CapelloAi??at the turn of the millennium. This was immediately followed by what can best be described as a lengthy dry spell. They have come within sniffing distance during Luciano Spalletti and Claudio Ranieri’s tenures, but after a couple of seasons of mediocrity and no European football, change seemed inevitable.
Enter Rudi Garcia
At the time of joining Roma, Rudi Garcia was far from a well-known entity. But for his relatively young age, he had piled up a lot of managerial experience. Mind you, he wasn’t the clubai??i??s first choice, as Romaai??i??s Director of Sport Walter Sabatini preferred Massimiliano Allegri or Walter Mazzarri. When both spurned Romaai??i??s offer, Sabatini turned his eyes to Garcia, a relatively unknown manager who had enjoyed some success during his stint with Ligue 1 side Lille. Having achieved a double in France while battling big guns like Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille, Garcia followed a philosophy of attacking football, believing it to be the best means of achieving success. Not only did he bring success to Lille, he was also pivotal in nurturing starlets like Eden Hazard, Rio Mavuba, Gervinho and Mathieu Debuchy on the way.
Garcia’s appointment by AS Roma was received with caution by fans who were skeptical about bringing in a relative unknown for their big club. Garcia cleared the doubts by giving the fans a glorious new achievement to cherish: a 10-game winning streak, the best ever start in Serie A history.
Rebuilding AS Roma
Roma started with lots of reshuffling to bring in the right players to suit their plans for the future. They said goodbye to veteran goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, the ever unpredictable Dani Osvaldo, and budding talents Erik Lamela, Marquinhos and Bojan Krkic. Adequate replacement was the need of the hour. In came key recruits Mehdi Benatia, Kevin Strootman and Adam Ljajic, whose youthful energy and talents had huge demands in the European market. After fending off the competition for these players, Garcia engineered a reunion with his older pupils Gervinho (from Arsenal) and Michel Bastos (from Al ai??i??Ain for loan). The final pieces of the puzzle were the talented veteran full-backs Maicon and Morgan De Sanctis to plug any gaps in defence. With Totti and Daniele De Rossi retained, it was time for the show to begin.
Garcia’s Approach
Rudi Garcia has had a colorful career. In addition to being a player and a manager, he has the additional experience of having worked in a number of supporting roles like a physio, a scout and an analyst for various clubs. One can imagine that this gives him a good insight into what are the means to get the best out of your resources in every game. He utilised his vast knowledge of football to chalk out a potent 4-3-3 formation based line-up, with a withdrawn De Rossi guarding the back four and Totti using his excellent footballing vision in a false nine role (occasionally, Garcia played Mattia Destro up front). Roma are compact out of possession, with the whole team defending, always waiting for a chance to spring a counter. The high speed of their transition play is where they can be most dangerous and effective.
Totti and De Rossi
This season, the two Roma generals have upgraded themselves to the immovable pillars of this youthful squad, leading them from the front throughout.
Francesco Totti produced great form as a false nine under Luciano Spalletti, and that same golden form seems to have returned. He has built a strong relationship with the two wide players, Gervinho and Florenzi. Unlike his prime, when Totti was more of a midfielder than a forward, thereai??i??s no doubt that currently this is his best position (especially considering his age and his scoring record). In Totti, Gervinho and Florenzi, Garcia replicated the successful formula of Lille, where Gervinho, Eden Hazard and Moussa Sow were extremely effective together. Gervinho, who struggled in the Premier League, seems to have come leaps and bounds this season. Knowing Garciaai??i??s system better than anyone has helped him, and he has also adapted to Italian football very well, thanks to some good support from Totti.
In the able leadership of Daniele De Rossi with Kevin Strootman and Miralem Pjanic, Roma have one of the better midfields in Europe, both technically and tactically. Garciaai??i??s 4-3-3 usually lines up a defensive midfielder in front of the defence. That put an end to the Daniele De Rossi dilemma. De Rossi went from playing like a deep-lying midfielder to being an interior holding midfielder in Zdenek Zemanai??i??s three-man midfield. Under Garcia, De Rossi seems a player reborn after the turmoil he had under Luis Enrique and Zeman. He continued to play a deep role, as a third centre-back at times, making crucial defensive interventions inside his own half and in his penalty area also. Pjanic and Strootman are the creative presences with the Dutchman having tons of assists. Strootman is probably Romaai??i??s most consistent performer. His play is crucial in protecting the centre-backs and helping link his midfield to the forwards. Heai??i??s the perfect complement to De Rossiai??i??s defending and Miralem Pjanicai??i??s offensive skills.
Conclusion
Having a strong base and a splendid performance this season, the future is really bright for Roma. Itai??i??s been a journey back to supremacy this season. It is a new dawn of AS Roma’s football, with the beauty of creativity and flair, a bold compact defense with punishing counter attacks. But there are still a few concerns to be addressed. They still need to build upon the squad whose depth has not been tested to the limits. There are concerns about Tottiai??i??s durability. The bench barely looks like it would be able to make any difference. With European football looming next season, the challenge of keeping his elite talents in Rome will bring some testing times for Garcia. But Garcia is finding a good balance at Roma and could definitely lead them to the title if they sustain their form.
