England defeated Peru 3-0 at Wembley in a friendly match before the World Cup.
England won the match convincingly through strikes from Daniel Sturridge, and defensive duo Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka. The Liverpool striker scored a sensational goal in the 32nd minute which caught everyone’s attention and has led to even more expectations from the player for the upcoming World Cup.
Roy Hodgson was delighted with his team’s good performance and the great atmosphere at the stadium. He also said that it was the perfect preparation for the side before the World Cup
“It is the perfect end to a perfect two weeks. It was a wonderful send-off to the World Cup by a quite incredible crowd.Ai??It didn’t look as if it would be too comfortable in the first half, but as soon as Daniel scored that wonderful goal the game wasn’t in doubt.
“To do it in front of 85,000 people was a great send-off, the atmosphere was a vote of confidence.
“When you play against teams with 10 men behind the ball you have to be patient but I had no doubt we would win.”
Hodgson took Baines off in the second half, but he maintained that there was no injury concern for the side
“The most important thing for us was to come through it unscathed, injury-wise.Ai??(Taking Baines off) was caution on our part. He could have continued but the game was over.”
The England boss said that the absentees like Luke Shaw, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Phil Jones will get a chance to play in the other friendly against Ecuador:
“They’ll play on Wednesday (against Ecuador).Ai??They could have played tonight, but I determined they’d start the game on Tuesday and we had a lot of subs on the bench. We thought we’d give them another day’s training.”
Wayne Rooney enjoyed a frustrating spell in front of goal and was substituted in the 66th minute.But Hodgson wasn’t critical of his performance and appreciated the United striker’s attitude.
“I was happy with Wayne Rooney’s performance,” he said.
“Rooney and Gerrard (who was also subbed in the second half for Jack Wilshere) are important members of our squad, and 3-0 seemed an opportunity to give younger ones a go. We think (Rooney’s) fitness is progressing.Ai??I don’t have any fears in that respect. His attitude and commitment are first class, even in a game of this nature. He has two more weeks to keep that going. I’m very pleased with the options I’ve got in my strike force.”
Captain Steven Gerrard also praised fellow Liverpool man Daniel Sturridge and spoke highly of his sensational goal.
“It doesn’t surprise me. I’ve seen it all season with Daniel,” Gerrard told Sky Sports News.
“I think he got big confidence with the manager putting him in his favoured position tonight and I think that goals will do wonders for him.Ai??If we’re to progress in the World Cup then we’re going to need Daniel and Wayne (Rooney) to create magical moments and that was certainly one tonight.”
Daniel Sturridge himself said that he was happy with his goal but eventually it was about the team
“I was pleased (with the goal) but it’s part of the preparation.
