Germany became World Champions for the fourth time after they defeated Argentina via an extra-time goal from Mario Gotze.
Years of planning and preparation, right from the grassroots level has finally bore fruits as Germany lifted the most coveted trophy in football, once again. This was also the first time a European side has lifted won this tournament in the Americas. Despite winning the Golden ball, Lionel Messiai??i??s brilliance failed to push Argentina over the last hurdle, but Alejandro Sabellaai??i??s men could be pleased with their achievement this year.
The match was a cagey affair to start with, as both the teams looked to keep their organisation at the back. Germany controlled most of the possession and looked shark in their passing. But they failed to create too many openings; in fact Argentina created most of the good chances in the match and failed to convert them.
Gonzalo Higuain was guilty of missing a sitter when Tony Kroos unwittingly headed the ball in his path and the Napoli striker scuffed his shot wide after being through on goal. That miss would of course come back to haunt him later. Minutes later, Higuan did score as he Lavezzi found him with a lovely cross, but the goal was ruled out due to offside.
Germany came close to scoring through Benedikt Howedes, whose wonderful header hit the post from a corner. The match headed into extra-time as both the teams failed to produced enough quality in the final third of the pitch.
Then in the 113th minute of the match the telling moment of the game arrived when substitute Mario Gotze scored the winner. The Bayern Munich midfielder, who replaced Miroslav Klose, chested down a cross from Andre Schurrle and scored past Sergio Romero with a lovely volley. It was a goal worthy of winning the tournament and so it proved to be.
