Germany’s World Cup Triumph – The Joy Of Number 4 And What Comes After

The Joy Of Number 4 And What Comes After For Germany

The ghosts of the past two decades have finally been put to rest. All the heartbreaks since USA ai??i??94 shall now be forgotten. Those painful memories of missing out on the most coveted of trophies now erased. For the first time since reunification, Germany have been crowned world champions.

Back in early 2014, when World Cup fever was beginning to percolate into the football masses, the Germans were being touted as one of the favorites. A side predominantly formed by players from the dominant Bayern Munich, and dotted by the brilliance of the likes of Marco Reus and Mesut Ai??zil, was surely one of the most daunting sides to go up against in Brazil.

But then lightning struck. Injury ruled out Marcel Schmelzer, leaving young Erik Durm as Joachim LAi??wai??i??s only out-and-out left back. Odd selection policies meant Miroslav Klose was the only striker travelling to Brazil. The biggest blow arrived when Reus was injured in a pre-tournament friendly against Armenia, thus ensuring that one of Germanyai??i??s most in form talents was out of the biggest tournament in the sport.

Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger were both doubtful to start Germanyai??i??s first few fixtures in what was being touted as the group of death. A freak accident in a promotional event in Germanyai??i??s training camp in Northern Italy only brought more unwanted attention for Die Mannschaft.

The worries of Germany falling short at the biggest stage of all were growing once again. Social media was gradually being flooded with talk of Germanyai??i??s chances lessening with every passing blow. LAi??wai??i??s tactics were being questioned; was Philipp Lahm to be used in midfield like at Munich? Ai??zilai??i??s attitude on the field was becoming a cause for worry. Was he to be used at all, given his sub-par efforts towards the end of the domestic season?

The list of conundrums was endless. LAi??wai??i??s job was no more as enviable as it had seemed back in January. The German side was turning into a shadow of the pre tournament favorites that many saw them to be. All the efforts of the DFB to promote youth football in Germany, to create a side that would bring the long awaited World Cup trophy back to Deutschland ai??i?? was it all going to waste?

The answer has been a resounding no. Mario GAi??tzeai??i??s beautiful volley past Sergio Romero ensured that Germany were crowned world champions in Brazil. The myth of European sides struggling in South America had been rubbished. All the talk of European sides struggling to manage in the testing conditions of Brazil rendered nonsense. The DFBai??i??s surprising decision to have the team stationed in the uninhabited Campo Bahia has paid rich dividend. The entire plan couldnai??i??t have panned out better.

En route to this monumental triumph, Germany managed to pull off some sensational results. The 4-0 thumping of Portugal to kick off their campaign, a 7-1 demolition of hosts Brazil, the nullification of both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, they seem to have done it all. The icing on the cake was Klose surpassing Brazilai??i??s Ronaldo as the highest goalscorer in World Cup history.

The question that seems to have arisen following Germanyai??i??s coronation as the best side in the world is whether they can dominate world football in a manner similar to Spain. A lot does point in favor of this. Bayern Munichai??i??s monopolistic hold over German football will continue in the near future and they should manage to attract a number of Germanyai??i??s top stars as well. Much like Pep Guardiolaai??i??s Barcelona did in Spain, this side should form the heart of the German side over the next few years. This would mean that a majority of the German side is most comfortable playing with each other, overcoming the troubles of getting the team to gel in those couple of weeks before a major international tournament.

When Spain began their era of dominance by winning EURO 2008, they had five players aged 30 or more in their 23 man squad. Germany had just 3 in their squad that made the trip to Brazil. This German squadai??i??s average age is in fact a touch lower than that of the Spainsh side that triumphed in Austria-Switzerland.

Germany has also shown that they can adapt to different styles of play and do so rapidly. When the Bayern-esque formation failed miserably against Algeria, LAi??w reverted to the staple 4-2-3-1, with Klose being used as a traditional striker. There was a much needed directness about the Germans and it proved to be the decisive factor in their triumph. As we saw more and more of Spain post 2008, it was this very directness that was lacking. The most important thing that this World Cup victory has brought to the fore is that in order to dominate, sides will have to be able to switch styles within the span of a single tournament, and this German side is more than capable of doing so.

Another factor that makes this German dominance a highly plausible future for the sport is the immense talent that is still waiting in the sidelines. Imagine this side with Reus thundering down the left flank, a fit Ilkay GA?ndogan available on the bench or possibly rotating with Khedira during a tournament, the Bender twins providing that much needed steel in midfield, Schmelzer providing solid defensive cover, possibly even Holger Badstuber returning to form and constituting what could possibly be the best defensive unit in international football.

And all the names mentioned above are the cream of the crop, the regulars who were unfortunate not to be lifting the trophy in Rio de Janeiro. We still havenai??i??t looked at the exciting Schalke duo of Max Mayer and Leon Goretzka, Hoffenheimai??i??s Kevin Volland or Borussia MAi??nchengladbachai??i??s Max Kruse who could be interesting choices to head the German attack in the future, the one and only Mario Gomez may return to take over from Klose, the surplus of supremely talented goalkeepers who can play second fiddle to Manuel Neuer and hopefully grow to his standards in the future. This is a list that seems endless.

The future looks brighter than ever for German football. It should come as no surprise if we see Germany engrave their name on the major tournaments to come. As long as the DFB keeps things simple from this point on, encouraging youth football the way it has and ensures that the Bundesliga can continue to hold on to as many of its talents as possible, thus creating a healthy atmosphere for domestic football, this nation will have an iron grip on the two major international trophies.
