As the German team were celebrating, the French players gathered around a distraught Antoine Griezmann, who wept openly. It was a flat performance from the Frenchmen, who lacked that final ball at times, and at others the finishing touch. Griezmann will go home with a fair share of regrets, as will Mathieu Valbuena. The two lightweight craftsmen were expected to be France’s creative outlets, the men responsible for creating opportunities for the usually clinical Karim Benzema and the skillful battering ram that is Paul Pogba. Neither man lived up to his potential, and France are out of the World Cup as a result.
First Goal
In TheHardTackle’s match preview,Ai??Karim Benzema vs Mats Hummels andAi??Rafael Varane vs Thomas Muller were highlighted as the key battles that would determine the outcome of the game. But as it turned, the match was decided by a contest between Hummels and Varane. Toni Kroos’ 12th minute free kick saw Hummels out-jump the Real Madrid center-half, and the ball found it’s way into Hugo Lloris’ goal.
It was a goal that went against the run of play, with France having looked the team more likely to score in the opening minutes. Once Germany took the lead, they were more than happy to sit back and keep the Frenchmen at bay. Miroslav Klose had started as a traditional number 9, but spent most of his time on the pitch having to come deeper to collect the ball. In fact, he didn’t have a single shot on goal. While he had nearly zero contribution on the ball, his presence and his reputation meant that neither Mamadou Sakho nor Varane strayed too far forward.
Germany Handle Benzema Well
Karim Benzema is by far the French team’s greatest goal threat. He’s very unlike a classic number 9 like Klose. Benzema enjoys having the ball at his feet, and is not one to wait around the 18 yard box for a chance to come his way. In fact, he’s dynamic enough thatAi??Didier Deschamps has at times played him on the left flank with Olivier Giroud as the frontman, something that he tried again with a 85th minute substitution to bring on the Arsenal man.
Everytime Benzema got the ball in a central position, Hummels and Jerome Boateng were at hand to either block his shots or to force him out wide. Out of his 6 shots on goal, 4 were from a central position, and each one of these was successfully blocked. The remaining two were from wider angles, and both were easily stopped by the excellent Manuel Neuer.
Two Ineffective Midfields
For the French, Paul Pogba was the only one who regularly looked like he would create something. Yohan Cabaye was invisible, but so was Toni Kroos, with the players cancelling each other out. Blaise Matuidi charged forward a few times, but neither he nor Pogba could really influence the game.
Neither midfield really asserted itself in the game. The difference is that, with Germany being 1-0 up very early, the onus was on the Frenchmen to come out and score. Valbuena had a poor game as he sprayed balls all over the place to little effect. Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger were clever in the way they guarded their back line, both picking up yellow cards eventually as they fouled Greizmann on purpose (on two separate occasions) to kill France’s counter attacking opportunities. Job done for the Germans, despite a decidedly average performance from a creative perspective.
The Fluffs At The End
Both teams got chances to score near the end of the game. Germany’s big chance came in the 81st minute when Mesut Ozil charged down the right flank and played a perfect pass into Thomas Muller’s feet. Muller, in a moment of footballing dyslexia, completed fluffed the chance. Luckily the ball rolled intoAi??Ai??Andre Schurrle’s path. Unluckily, his shot was very poor and rolled right into Lloris’ hands.
France’s chance fell to Karim Benzema, and was not as easy as Schurrle’s chance. It was, however, a chance. One that Benzema launched rather meekly into Neuer’s waiting hands. A rather fitting conclusion to the proceedings of the 90 minutes.
To sum up the night’s list of actions withing the 18 yard boxes: Klose fell,Ai??Muller slipped,Ai??Schurrle missed, Benzema fired right at Neuer, Ai??Matuidi fired right at Neuer, andAi??Valbuena forced Neuer to a good save. It was just one of those nights, where neither team could really come up with the goods. The early set piece was enough to see Germany through, and France can’t really have too many complaints on a night where they failed to turn up.
