After David Moyes lost his job, along with the confidence of the Manchester United board, we reason out why his dismissal was the wrong step for the club.
As David Moyes broke his silence after being sacked by the Manchester United board in the wake of an embarrassing defeat to Everton in the Premier League, one couldnai??i??t help but notice the honesty and humbleness come across in his statement. Here was a man who had the most difficult job in world football ai??i?? to follow in the footsteps of one of the best football managers the world has seen, who, for 27 years had been the man in-charge of one of the biggest football clubs in the world ai??i?? and had been unceremoniously been fired after ten months in the job, but there wasnai??i??t a trace of bitterness or sheepishness in his tone.
Moyes spoke of gratitude for Sir Alex Ferguson, the man who he replaced, for hand picking the fellow Scot for the most difficult job in world football, thanked the fans and the staff at Old Trafford for their support of the job, but remained dignifiedly muted on the players. There were no pointing fingers or passing the buck and Moyes underlined his sincerity towards the job by insisting that ai???The scale of the managerai??i??s job at United is immense, but I have never stepped away from hard work and the same applies to my coaching staff. ai???
Although most Manchester United fans across the world heaved a collective sigh of relief at seeing the back of David Moyes, some have criticized the decision of letting him go with just ten months into the job. We look at five reasons why firing Moyes was not the right way ahead for United.
1) Moyes was not given enough transition-time
Without doubt, the most obvious challenge for whoever was to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson was the massive transition phase that was to undoubtedly follow. Following a managerial legend, who has done it all for the last 27 years, was in part what made this job the most difficult in world football. To be given 10 months for Business-As-Usual to occur at Old Trafford was idiotically optimistic. The players, who were used to things running a certain way, were understandably unsettled by a whole new managerial style.
There were initial reports from Goodison Park when Moyes took over at Old Trafford that the Scot had a more intense training routine than most managers, which would be something the Manchester United players might not take a liking to. We do not know if that was the case, but reports have now emerged that not all players were too enthused about Moyesai??i??s methods in training. Indeed rumours were on about how Moyes had fallen out with Robin van Persie and that the Dutch marksman wanted out of Old Trafford.
Perhaps one mistake Moyes should own up to was a massive shake up of the management staff. Even as Ferguson was leaving, he advised Moyes not to let go of assistant manager Mick Phelan and first team coach Rene Meulensteen, since these people knew the club inside out. They were familiar with the players, as were the players with them. It would perhaps have been easier for Moyes to connect with the players had he heeded this piece of advice from Ferguson. Understandably though, Moyes brought in his own staff, with whom he had worked for eleven years, but failed to win over some players.
There are glaring examples of clubs taking time to get back on track when a successful manager leaves. Chelsea took two years to win the Premier League after Jose Mourinhoai??i??s first two and a half year stint at the club. After Rafa Benitez left Liverpool, having won the Champions League and coming close to winning the league in a five and a half year period, Liverpool have taken four seasons to get back to competing for the Premier League. It is therefore, unrealistic to expect wonders from a man in ten months following a managerial legend who was twenty seven years in the job.
2) Moyes never had the best luck
Some say even if Moyes was to be shown leniency from expectations this season, that leniency from the board could only be afforded to finishing fourth in the league and nothing beyond that. While there might be some truth to this expectation to finish in the Champions League places, Moyes definitely didnai??i??t have luck going his way this season.
To begin with, United had to play Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool at the start of the season just as the team was starting to come together under new management. That set United off to a rotten start from which they failed to recover. Obviously Moyes must take responsibility for the results, but the fixture list did not make his job any easier.
Next was the curious case of Robin van Persie. Beset with injuries, Moyes never really had the former Arsenal striker fit right through the season for his side. Van Persie played just 18 matches in the season and it was his goals that were left wanting for Moyes. The same Van Persie played all 38 matches in the Premier League last season and single-handedly won Sir Alex his last Premier League winnersai??i?? medal, scoring 30 goals in the season. The next best was a distant 18 by Javier Hernandez. This season the highest tally is 17 goals from Wayne Rooney, which clearly indicates how much Van Persieai??i??s goals have been sorely missed this season. Maybe Sir Alex wouldai??i??ve struggled too in the current season without Van Persie.
3) Players did not play well enough
The manager is usually made the scapegoat, but thereai??i??s no denying the playersai??i?? roles in the string of underachieving results. With the exception of Wayne Rooney and David de Gea, none of the players in the Manchester United dressing room can be said to have played anywhere near their actual potential.
United legend Roy Keane has hit out at the United players saying that some of the players ai???should be ashamed of themselvesai??? after a sorry showing in games against the top six sides in the league. United have always been about not being held ransom to player power, but it looks like in this case, the players have had the upper hand.
Discontent expressed by Van Persie, Rio Ferdinand, Anderson (after he left for Fiorentina) and now Danny Welbeck seem to have dominated the decision to fire Moyes. Former United captain and current football pundit Gary Neville said that the players have underperformed, but itai??i??s easier to fire one manager than twenty four players. David Moyes never got the support he needed from the players to succeed at Old Trafford. Instead of letting him bring the players he wanted to the club in the coming transfer window, the board thought it easier to find a manager who could work with what United have. Moyes certainly wasnai??i??t given a proper chance to build something at United in his own image.
4) Moyes was falsely blamed for ‘failings’ in the transfer market
Moyes was derided for not having been able to make a marquee signing in the summer transfer window. This was seen as an indication of the ineptitude of the manager who was thought not to be big enough to attract world class players. Moyes openly talked about signing the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara but in the end had to settle for Marouane Fellaini on transfer deadline day.
It looks like there were too many expectations from Moyes to make a big money signing when Sir Alex himself in the last eight years of his tenure made just two. Dimitar Berbatov in 2008 and Robin van Persie in 2012 are the only ones after Wayne Rooneyai??i??s capture who could be called marquee signings by Ferguson. Top talent very rarely did come to United. Big players like Ronaldinho, Arjen Robben and Alan Shearer in the past have always eluded capture when Ferguson was interested in buying them. Indeed when Ferguson had shown interest in signing Fellaini from Everton in 2012, the fans were right behind him. And when a year later, the new manager actually pulled off this signing, it was deemed a disappointing buy by the fans.
Another unknown aspect of the scouting network at United is the lack of a proper channel that Moyes had to get used to. In the past, Ferguson usually made signings based on intuition and informal talks with Jim Lawlor, the chief scout and Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman. It is safe to say that transfer failings during the summer were not entirely Moyesai??i??s fault but also highlighted the shortcomings of Woodward as well. The 37.5 million pound capture of Juan Mata from Chelsea shouldai??i??ve been seen as a step in the right direction for Moyes. Instead it was overlooked during the decision making process to fire him.
5) This was a results-based quick-fix firing
If we have learnt something from the hiring/firing hobby that the Russian at Stamford Bridge and the Sheikhs at the Etihad have is that permanency can never be achieved with such a trend. This is a downward spiral that takes you through a managerial merry-go-round sans stability. You may be able to deliver results instantly, but this panic hiring/firing is an addictive habit.
Chelsea fired Jose Mourinho half a season after he won the Premier League in 2006, they fired Carlo Ancelotti 10 months after he won the Premier League in 2010, and they fired Roberto di Matteo half a season after he won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012. Now theyai??i??re back with Mourinho and one canai??i??t help but wonder how much money couldai??i??ve been saved and how much stability couldai??i??ve been achieved at Chelsea, had differences with Mourinho been set aside in 2007.
Manchester City went through Sven Goran-Eriksson, Mark Hughes and then Roberto Mancini before the Italian delivered the clubai??i??s first trophy in 2011, 35 years after their last title in the form of the F.A. Cup, which was followed next season by the Premier League trophy. Exactly a year later, Mancini was fired because City finished second in the Premier League table, which was considered a failure.
Manchester United on the other hand, pride themselves at being a club that doesnai??i??t hire/fire too quickly. It boasts of being a club built on strong tradition and values where quick-fixes are never an option. Even during Unitedai??i??s lean period in the Premier League between 2001 and 2007, when they won only one Premier League and one League Cup, there was confidence in Sir Alex Fergusonai??i??s ability to bring them back because of the strong foundations laid at the club.
The firing of Moyes seems to be one made in haste and under pressure to find a scape goat for the terrible results in recent times. The sacking seems to have been made for result oriented reasons more than anything and this points to the trend that moneybags Chelsea and Manchester City have followed. The board and the fans have turned a deaf ear on Fergusonai??i??s plea to back the new manager. United must be careful, lest they fall into the bracket of the rich, quick fix club without a stable foundation to rely on.
