With England coming 31st out of the 32 teams who participated in this yearai??i??s FIFA World Cup, one wonders why a team of global superstars playing in the richest and most popular league in the world cannot do any better than crash out of the tournament so early. Where has it all gone wrong for the inventors of the beautiful game? Let us look at 5 reasons which may shed light on this.
1. Too many foreigners in the top domestic league
The Three Lions bowed out of the World Cup even before the group stage was over and scored just one point and two goals in the process. The debate about how the English Premier league is plagued by the influx of foreigners and how it has ruined the England National Football team has been raging on since a long time. One reason the top teams recruit talent from abroad is the sky high prices of English talent. Recent examples that spring to mind are Andy Carroll (A?35 million), and Stewart Downing (A?20 million), which show that an average or just ‘decent’ player commands such a high fee. Compare this to fees paid by English clubs for foreign talent like Cristiano Ronaldo (A?12 million) and Luis Suarez (A?23 million) and it will be easy to understand why the team owners will look abroad for getting value for their money. According to a survey by the CIES (Centre International d’Etude du Sport) English premier league has 60.4% foreign players, the second highest in Europe after Cyprus. Ai??English players managed to play for 32.26% of all the minutes played in the premier league compared to Spaniards (last holders of the World Cup) playing 59% of the total minutes in Spanish La Liga and Germans (current holders of the World Cup) playing 50% of all the minutes played in German Bundesliga. While it makes Premier League quite strong, it makes the English National Football team equally weak.
2.Ai??Lack of first team opportunities for home grown talent
With the cost of missing out on European football being too high, top teams are avoiding taking a risk of giving a chance to a promising youngster on a regular basis. Teams recruit children as young as 6 year of age, to join their academies. Each club has hundreds of children playing in their youth academy and centers of excellence each year and the cull is also severe. Very few of these children earn the golden ticket of professional contract and still fewer get a first team call up. By the time they turn 21 only a fraction still play professional football in the Premier League. It has taken Rickie Lambert 17 years to be re-signed by the club he used to play for as a youngster. But not every player has such a fairy tale ending to their story. Most either end their careers in lower leagues or stop playing all together. One should look no further than Germany in seeing the result of giving opportunity to youngsters in first team football.
3.Ai??Focus on one player rather than the collective failing of the team
During and post the World Cup, the English media was obsessed with Wayne Rooney. He was criticized for not doing enough against Italy but stats show he did better than most his teammates. Despite being one of the better players in the team of mediocre performers he was blamed for an underperforming teamai??i??s failing at the World Cup. Major criticism that comes the players way is that they are paid too much for doing too little, and showing lack of commitment towards national team compared to their respective clubs. To perform well a player needs to be relaxed rather than being under relentless scrutiny from the press and a nation demanding stellar moments of individual brilliance. And this scrutiny prevents Michael Carrick, a Manchester United regular who has the ability to control the game but isn’t glamorous, from boarding the plane to Brazil and adding to his 31 caps for England. England must learn from Germany and Spain, that football is quintessentially a team sport and the focus needs to be on the team rather than a player.
4.Ai??Playing with an outdated system
The formation usually preferred by England is 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 where every playerai??i??s role is defined. There are 2 full backs, 2 center backs, 2 wide midfielders/wingers, 2 central midfielders and 2 forwards or one dropping deeper like Wayne Rooney does. This system is known to be predictable and lacking fluidity and is slow in transition to any other system. It does not allow players to utilize their ability completely and fixes them to a rigid role. While the system can be converted to a contemporary 4-2-3-1 with wide players pushing up and a forward dropping deeper the team needs to have the right players for this transition which England lacked at this World Cup.
5.Ai??Ai??Broken grassroots level football
Currently England has the fewest coaches holding UEFA ai???Aai??? level coaching badge compared to Germany and Spain. Till last year England had only 1,161 such coaches compared to 12,720 in Spain and 5,500. The last time England won U-19 European Championship was 21 years ago, whereas Spain has won it 6 times over the last 12 years. The current trend is that youth coaches are not paid highly and thus youth teams are trained by volunteers rather than qualified coaches as seen overseas. The FA, Premier League and Championship clubs need to invest in better coaches who teach players how to play with modern and fresher styles rather than ai???ball on my headai??? style that most England teams have followed so far.
