Facing another off-field controversy, FIFA has banned Barcelona from transferring players during the next two transfer windows after it was found guilty of violating the code of conduct.
Seen as a devastating blow to the Mes que un club, the ban was imposed on the Catalans for illegally bringing Under-18 football internationals to the club over a span of four years. According to the penalty imposed, Barcleona will not be allowed to bring any new players to their club this summer and in the next Winter Transfer window. What did Barcelona do wrong?
Though the penalty imposed is quite clear, many fail to understand why exactly Barcelona was handed out this severe punishment.
Footballai??i??s supreme regulatory body, FIFA, considers recruiting Under-18 footballers as ai???traffickingai??i?? and has found Barcelona guilty of breaching this code of conduct and has hence punished the Catalans by barring them from entering the next two transfer windows.
FIFA only allows for the international transfer of players once they have reached the 18 year old mark.Ai?? This is done so as to protect the minors from exploitation and harassment and though such a transfer might be good for his career, it cannot be deemed good for his interests as a minor according to FIFA.
Barcelona were penalised because they continued to recruit international players since 2009 and brought 10 under-18 players to the club in gross violation of the rules set down by the FIFA. The investigation also showed that the club worked hand in hand with the Spanish FA which too has been penalised (Ai??A?340,000 fine) for its actions which allowed Barcelona to violate FIFAai??i??s rules.
What is the penalty imposed on Barcelona?
The biggest punishment is being barred from entering the next two transfer windows which means that the club cannot bring new talents to replenish its squad till the end of the next season. Barcelona have also been penalised A?306,000 (450,000 Swiss francs) over what is being considered as ai???child exploitationai??i?? by the football governing body. The club now has the option of appealing the ban but no official word has yet been issued by the officials at the Camp Nou. The Goal-Keeper Conundrum
But perhaps the biggest blow comes due to it being barred from entering the next two transfer windows which means that Barcelona cannot add fresh reinforcements till the end of the next summer. The club however can sell players which will leave the club only depleted. Victor Valdes has already announced that he will leave the club this summer and is now sidelined due to a knee injury. Being barred from the transfer window will mean that Barcelona cannot bring in Valdesai??i?? replacement till the end of next season and that Pinto will have to be appointed as the first-choice keeper. A Leaky Defence
Barcelonaai??i??s defence has proved to be its Achillesai??i?? heel for more than one season and though they failed to bring in any quality defenders these past two transfer windows, it looks like the Catalans will have to wait till 2015 summer till they can establish a firm defence at the back. Puyol has already announced his retirement from the club and Pique now finds himself sidelined due to a hip injury, which means that Barcelona will stand severely exposed at the back. Without A Striker
While Messi, Iniesta and Neymar have provided Barcelona with enough firepower in the past couple of seasons, Barcelona have lacked a striker of international quality in their ranks since Zlatanai??i??s departure under Guardiola. It was widely speculated that Barcelona will be investing in the summer on a striker with Suarez and Agueroai??i??s names doing the rounds.
