Mostly thanks to the poor performances of the Madrid clubs in recent weeks, Barcelona have seen themselves faced with a unique situation: their last match of the season against AtlAi??tico Madrid at Camp Nou will be a straight shootout for the La Liga title. While this particular situation is unique, it’s far from the first time Barcelona have been involved in tight title races, in fact one could say they’re legendary in that regard. It’s the last day of the 1991/1992 La Liga season and Barcelona still have a chance – but don’t depend on themselves – to defend the La Liga title they won the previous year. Cruyff’s side needed to beat Athletic Bilbao at Camp Nou – which they did without too much difficulty – and hope Real Madrid did not win at Tenerife – managed by none other than Jorge Valdano, a Real Madrid legend. All seemed lost for the Catalans when Real Madrid took a 2-0 lead within the first half hour, but the Canarians sensationally came back to win 3-2, thus gifting Barcelona the continental double of La Liga and the Champions League. In one of those funny twists football sometimes provides, a year later Real Madrid were given a chance at redemption; the 1992/1993 La Liga title race between Real Madrid and Barcelona went to the very last day again with Real Madrid only needing a win to secure the title. As fate would have it, in their quest for a historic 4th consecutive La Liga title Barcelona found themselves once again needing outside help to win in the last day, only this time their rivals weren’t Real Madrid but Deportivo, who took a 1 point lead into the last match of the season. Barcelona did their part again and came from 1-2 down to beat Sevilla 5-2 at Camp Nou and it looked like they were poised to steal the title again with Deportivo and Valencia unable to break the stalemate. But then in added time Deportivo got a penalty; with Donato already subbed out and Bebeto notoriously shying away from the responsibility, it was up to Djukic to step up to the plate and have the fans erupt at the Riazor as Deportivo conquered their first ever league title. But overwhelmed by the moment, Djukic choked and the Valencia keeper easily saved his tame penalty to the immense disappointment of everyone in the stadium.
And so Barcelona had come from behind on the last day to clinch the title, for the third consecutive season; Cruyff’s Barcelona went into the annals of history for their 4 consecutive league titles plus one Champions League, but it could very easily have been just one league title if not for Tenerife and Djukic. History usually only remembers titles, but in this case it also remembers the way they were obtained, winning three years in a row in such a fashion is absolutely unprecedented and unlikely to ever be repeated.
Now, 20 years later, Barcelona will once again enter the last day in second place, only this time their fate is in their own hands as they host leaders AtlAi??tico Madrid and a win will give Barcelona the title. This time, it doesn’t depend on Tenerife or Djukic, but on Barcelona alone. The task won’t be easy as Barcelona failed to beat AtlAi??tico in 5 attempts so far this season in all competitions, but in a match of this transcendence in front of a full Camp Nou crowd, Barcelona are expected to step up and continue the club’s amazing traditions of epic last day league wins in what might just be the most anticipated match in La Liga history: it’s at least the first time the title decision comes down to a straight shootout between the top 2 in the last day of the season.
While this wasn’t by all accounts the best of seasons for Barcelona, to put it mildly, this is a great opportunity to make it a memorable one, as it is very unlikely that the club will get another such opportunity to win a title shootout in front of their fans any time soon.
