In this edition of The Talking Game, Werder Bremen striker Nils Petersen chats with us about the club’s targets, his time with Bayern and more.
Nils Petersen has been one of the few bright sparks in Werder Bremen’s season thus far. The German striker leads the scoring charts at the Weserstadion with five goals in fourteen league appearances.Ai??(Image courtsey – Werder Bremen)
Petersen began his senior career with Carl Zeiss Jena and then Energie Cottbus in the lower rungs of German football. His two seasons with Cottbus were enough to catch the attention of Bayern Munich. After a season with the Bavarians, Petersen was transferred on a loan to Bremen and the deal was made permanent this summer. The 25-year-old tells TheHardTackle all about his club’s goals, his time with the big boys of German football and a whole lot more!
Q: What do you think is a realistic target for Werder Bremen this season? And what are your personal targets for 2014?
Petersen: Staying in the league is most important for us, but I hope that we can be more successful, of course. I personally want to participate in as many games as possible and I want to score many goals.
Q: How different has Robin Dutt’s approach been from that of Thomas Schaaf?
Petersen: Both of them are very competent coaches. Thomas Schaaf has been shaping an offensive way of playing football in Bremen. Lately that hasn’t been so successful, because we didn’t score as many goals as in the past, but we got a lot of goals conceded. Currently we try to remedy those mistakes.
Q: Things didn’t work out too well for you at Bayern Munich. Why do you think that was the case? Did you move to a club of that caliber a little too early?
Petersen:Ai??In fact, I don’t think it went so badly. I was very happy about this experience and to participate in 15 matches for Bayern Munich. So when I came to Bremen I had a good status.
Q: With Aaron Hunt still not having signed an extension with Bremen, are you worried that the club might be losing one of its most influential players?
Petersen: I do not hope so! Aaron has been here for such a long time and I think he appreciates the club and Werder appreciates him very much. I hope that both parties agree, because Aaron leaving would be a loss for the team.
Q: What are your views on Thomas Hitzlsperger’s recent coming out regarding his homosexuality? Do you believe that German football is a lot less homophobic now?
Petersen: I guess that even today coming out isn’t easy for a football player. Therefore I appreciate that a former player of the national team has dared to take the step. Personally, I’m not prejudiced against homosexuality. Maybe after Thomas Hitzlsperger’s coming out others have the heart to appear before the public, too. I am convinced to say that every player would be supported by his club and respected by his opponents.
Q: Given the dearth of strikers in the German National Team, are you still hopeful of getting a call up? Do you think you can make it to the World Cup with a really good Rueckrunde?
Petersen: Everything is possible, of course. But I do not really believe in getting a call up. Only owing to several circumstances this dream could come true. I am a realist and do therefore not really think about this case.
