Arsenal FC continue their pursuit of Schalke winger Julian Draxler, a move which might define the outcome of this season for the Gunners.
Julian Draxler has been linked with Arsenal since the summer. Although the rumours died down back then as Arsene Wenger landed Mesut Ozil, but the German international has once again been on the headlines in this transfer window with reports strongly linking him with a move to the Emirates.
There are no doubts that Arsenal and Arsene Wenger realize the need of a big name signing in this window in order to sustain their title challenge this season. The Gunners have made a fantastic start to their campaign, both domestically and in Europe, but general consensus is that the squad is still now strong enough to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea in the long run. Arsenal have a brilliant chance of ending their silverware draught this season and one or two signings in this window will increase their chances of doing so.

The Gunners have already lost the lead at the top of the table as Manchester City displaced them, and with an intimidating fixture list awaiting them in February and March, the Arsenal fans will be hoping that the club is able to do the right business before the deadline day. Draxler remains Arsene Wengerai??i??s top priority, but the main stumbling block in this deal is Schalkeai??i??s unwillingness to sell him midway through the season. Arsenal certainly have a better chance of signing him in the summer when his release clause comes into the picture, but the Gunners are believed to be desperate to push through for a move in this window itself. Landing him and a striker in this window could be the difference between lifting the title this season for the London club.
The 20-year-oldai??i??s transfer was initially looking unlikely following his injury, which was expected to keep him out for a long period. But Arsenalai??i??s pursuit of the winger received a major boost yesterday when Dr Hans-Wilhelm MA?ller-Wohlfahrt insisted that Draxler will be back in action in a week. Recent reports suggested that Arsenal have dispatched delegations to Germany to negotiate this move. Schalke are believed to be unwilling to part ways with the young German and are haggling over the transfer fee with the London club. Moreover, it was also reported that their decision to sell Draxler in this window might depend on their ability to sign Lewis Holtby from Tottenham Hotspur. The German club are unwilling to let go of Draxler without a proper replacement.
Holtby, who has had limited opportunities at Tottenham, is also looking to change his club in order to gain regular first team action. But his agent suggested that it is up to Spurs to agree a fee.
“My feeling is he’ll leave but it’s not in our hands. Spurs have to agree first. We hope to find a solution in the next 2 days” ai??i?? Holtbyai??i??s agent was quoted in the press.
Considering how inadvertently Daniel Levy helped Arsenal in signing Mesut Ozil in the summer, if a similar episode takes place in case of Julian Draxler it might outrage a few Spurs supporters out there.
The Arsenal squad has been stretched a lot recently with injuries to a lot of key players. Theo Walcottai??i??s absence for the rest of the season could turn out to be a big blow, while Aaron Ramsey is also set to miss out for few weeks. But despite such persistence from Arsenal, Schalke remain in control of this transfer saga and the German club have maintained their stance of refusing to sell him at the moment. Schalke chief Horst Heldt insisted that Draxler will remain at the club this season in a recent interview.
