Diego Simeone and the Resurrection of Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone' art of intimidation

ai???It’s easier to go down a hill than up it but the view is much better at the top.ai???

Before May 18th, 2013, there was a popular hashtag doing the rounds on Twitter, talking about how much the world had changed #SinceAtleticoMadridLastBeatRealMadrid. If you are curios as to how long it had been, it had been more than a decade and a half, with one of the fiercest rivalries in football being reduced to a one-sided affair with Atletico Madrid playing the role of a punching bag. The last time the ai???poor cousins from Madridai??i?? won a domestic trophy was in 1995-1996 when they won the double (La Liga and Copa del Rey) and have since then gone through a barren patch that has resulted in the arrival and subsequent departure of several managers and superstars.

So on the 18th of May 2013, when Atletico Madrid lined up against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, the odds were stacked against them. Regarded as the obvious underdogs, Atletico Madrid, under the inspiring leadership of their Argentine manager Diego Simeone, who coincidentally was also a part of the 1995-1996 squad, laid siege at the Bernabeu to end their 17-year draught.

Returning to the overused adage with which this note begins, Atletico Madrid know a thing or two about going down a hill and then climbing back to the top.

Mere Pretenders?

Jump to February 2014, Atletico Madrid head the La Liga, leading both Barcelona and Real Madrid by three points each. The emergence of Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone is perhaps the most under-rated phenomenon in Spanish and European football, here’s why... Though Atletico Madrid have been continuously improving under Simeone for the past couple of years, their emergence as a leading force in the La Liga this season has somehow managed to take people by surprise. Considered a fluke, the Los Rojiblancos have never quite been given the respect they deserve, having been dismissed as mere pretenders. The fact that people werenai??i??t expecting such a performance, is testimony to the fact that when it comes to Spanish football, you do not really make headlines if you are not Real Madrid or Barcelona.

To understand Atleticoai??i??s transformation under Simeone, one must analyze the clubai??i??s performances before the arrival of the manager. Succeeding Gregorio Manzano at Vicente Calderon, Simeone inherited a squad that had finished 7th in the La Liga during the 2010-2011 season.

2010-2011

Judging Atletico Madrid based on statistics alone, it is quite apparent that Los Rojiblancos were having a tough time domestically, drawing blanks in the front of the goal and leaking them at the back. They conceded a total of 53 goals in the 2010-2011 season, at the rate of 1.4 goals per game. Up front, they managed to find the back of the net only 62 times, scoring at an abysmal rate of 1.63 goals per game even though they had Sergio Aguero, Diego Forlan and Diego Costa leading the attack. A statistical comparison between Atletico Madrid and the ai???big twoai??i?? of Spain, Barcelona and Real Madrid, reveals the wide gulf between the three Spanish clubs.Ai?? Barcelona, league champions, conceded at the rate of 0.55 goal per game while Real conceded at 0.87 goal per game in comparison to Atleticoai??i??s 1.4 goals per game. Hence defensively, Atletico Madrid were in doldrums. Their inability to defend the ball led to severe defeats as fans increasingly got frustrated with the teamai??i??s performance.

In terms of goal-scoring, Atletico Madrid trailed the ai???big twoai??i?? as they scored at the rate of 1.63 goals per game which paled in comparison to Barcelonaai??i??s 2.5 goals per game and Real Madridai??i??s 2.68 goals per game. Hence there was a general mood of despair that surrounded the Vicente Calderon. In an interview with FourFourTwo magazine, Diego Forlan admitted that the players along with the fans were disillusioned with the clubai??i??s performances.

ai???There was too much negativity about in the psyche of the supporters and that fed into the players. They were used to failure,ai??? Diego Forlan

2011-2012

Diego Simeone was appointed as the manager of Atletico Madrid in December 2011. Atletico Madrid had already played their first 16 domestic fixtures, of which they won only 5, drew 4 and lost a total of 7 games. Having accumulated only 19 points in 16 games, Simeone faced an uphill task but the battle-ready Argentine manager grabbed the challenge by its horns, as he organised the team and staged a comeback towards the second half of the campaign.

In fact, he had an immediate effect on the squad as he plugged the loopholes at the back and fired his strikers to perform better in front of the goal. His arrival saw Atletico Madrid turn into a defensibly tight unit, capable of scoring goals up front as he slowly enabled the side to climb up the league table. Under his guidance, Atletico Madrid went on to concede only 19 goals in the next 21 matches, at the rate of 0.91 goal per match, in sharp contrast to the 27 goals (at the rate of 1.6 goals per match) they conceded before his arrival. His strikers were scoring consistently as Atletico Madrid went on to win 10, draw 7 and lose just 5 games under his command.

In comparison to the previous half of the season, Atletico Madridai??i??s win percentage rose from 0.31% to 0.46% under the managership of Simeone while the loss percentage fell down from 0.44% to just 0.23% . In just 5 months, Simeoneai??i??s philosophy radiated through Atletico Madridai??i??s performances in the domestic league as he imbibed his own fearlessness and determination in the players.

Arda Turan

In an interview with FourFourTwo magazine, Arda Turan gave testimony to their newfound confidence and fighting spirit. ai???We are not a team of individuals. We are a collective group of hard working players who always want the best for the team. We battle for every ball during every minute of each match and you can see even in training matches that nobody wants to lose. We have a great team spirit, like a family.ai???

ai???Every match is a final for us. We take every game as it comes and approach it with the mentality of a final and see what happens. This doesnai??i??t mean that we donai??i??t have big ambitions, I can assure you we do.ai???

And big ambitions they did have. Simeoneai??i??s success at Atletico Madrid was not limited to the domestic league. Qualifying from the group stages of the Europa League, it was under Simeone that Atletico navigated the tricky knock-out stages and overcame Lazio, Besiktas, Hannover 96 and Valencia to set up a date with Athletic Bilbao in the finals. Simeoneai??i??sAi?? side proved themselves capable of competing on the European stage as the team scored a total of 19 goals over the 4 knock-out stages, conceding only 6 in the process. They faced Athletic Bilbao in the finals and went on to beat them by three goals to clinch the Europa League Cup.

Ai??The icing on the cake came in August when Atletico faced Champions League winners Chelsea at Monaco for the UEFA Super Cup. Though the encounter was supposed to be a cake-walk for Chelsea, underdogs Atletico Madrid wrote quite another script as a certain Radamel Falcao tore Chelsea apart with a first-half hattrick. Defensively strong and quick to attack, Atletico Madrid grabbed the headlines after beating Chelsea four goals to one to clinch the UEFA Super Cup.

2012-2013

Having spent 6 months in charge of Atletico Madrid, Diego Simeone had managed to mould the club into a spirited unit, capable of taking the fight to the opposition and ready to play on the big stage. Captained by Gabi, Atletico led siege on the La Liga, fighting Real Madrid and Barcelona tooth and nail for the Spanish crown. With Real Madrid losing the plot early on in the campaign, Atletico chased Barcelona for the top spot for the better part of the season. It was only after the 27th round of the league that Real Madrid managed to finally go past their city-rivals, as Atletico settled for the third spot in the La Liga.

Simeone

In order to truly understand Atleticoai??i??s transformation under Diego Simeone, it is important to understand the Argentine who had an illustrious career as a footballer behind me before he took up managerial responsibilities. A defensive midfielder, Simeone was known for the passion with which he played his football. A perfect example of the quintessential box-to-box midfielder, Simeone was popular during his career for his undying attitude and his hunger for success. Never the one to give up, he used to make extensive runs all-over the pitch, putting in crucial tackles, intercepting passes and playing the ball from the defence.

As a manager, Simeone managed to style his team in his own image. Instilling the same passion that he had as a player for the game, Simeone motivated Atletico Madrid to play fearless football. Fast, precise and united-that is the Atletico Madrid that we now see on the pitch. He transformed the midfield into a fierce unit, capable of taking the attack to the opposition as well as nipping an attack in the bud by making crucial tackles and interceptions. His players are motivated, defensively astute and ready to spring an attack on the opposition.

This is perhaps best illustrated by the teamai??i??s performance in the 2012-2013 La Liga. Conceding only 31 goals in 38 matches, Atletico held the best defensive record in Spain, conceding 9 goals less than the eventual champions Barcelona and 11 less than city-rivals Real Madrid. They suffered only 8 losses, out of which 4 came at the hands of the ai???big twoai??i??. Though Atletico failed to score with ease, they managed to find the back of the net on 65 occasions, winning a total of 23 games in the league.

Reborn Under Diego Simeone

But the defining moment for Atletico Madrid came at Santiago Bernabeu as they faced their city-rivals for the Copa del Rey trophy. Having not won against Real Madrid in more than a decade, a spirited Atletico managed to upset the odds as they took the game to Real and scored a late winner to grab their first domestic trophy in more than 15 years. Though the trophy was an important addition to clubai??i??s silverware, the more important achievement was that Atletico Madrid were able to break their mindset as they rose to the occasion and realized that their fierce rivals were, at the end of the day, despite all their Galacticos, vulnerable.

Talking about Simeoneai??i??s influence on Atletico Madrid, Diego Costa admitted in an interview with FourFourTwo Magazine that the club is much indebted to the Argentine manager.

ai???[Simeone] has been important not only for me, but the whole group, heai??i??s changed our way of thinking. He asks us to get into every single game as if it were the last one of our careers, demanding you leave all you can on the pitch, always showing that thereai??i??s room for growing. It wasnai??i??t like this before his arrival.ai???

Ai??2013-2014

It is on this belief that Simeone laid the foundations for Atleticoai??i??s present campaign. Now amongst the European elite, Atletico Madrid marched into their domestic campaign as with renewed vigour. Taking the season a game at a time, Atletico burst into a brilliant start as they remained undefeated till their away encounter to Espanyol in the 9th week of the La Liga. Though Falcaoai??i??s departure seemed to have deflated Atletico Madrid on paper, the emergence of Diego Costa and the arrival of David Villa has transformed the club into one of the most threatening forces in Europe. With only 16 games to go for the league to finish, Atletico Madrid sit right on top of the La Liga table, leading Barcelona and Real Madrid by 3 points each.

Diego Simeoneai??i??s side is currently scoring at an impressive rate of 2.55 goals per game which, if it continues, will yield 97 goals for the underdogs from Madrid. It was Atleticoai??i??s inability to score goals last season that prevented the club from breaking the hierarchy in Spain. Meanwhile, Simeone has gone one up in terms of defence, keeping the best defensive record in Spain, conceding at a lowly rate of 0.64 goals per match. At this rate, Atletico Madrid will better their previous defensive record and concede only 24 goals during the entire campaign.

Victorious again at Santiago Bernabeu

Playing with extreme confidence, Atletico Madrid has managed to brush aside all opposition this season, including Real Madrid. Diego Simeoneai??i??s men beat their city rivals for the second time at their own backyard. Atleticoai??i??s encounters with Barcelona, twice in the Super Cup and once in the league, saw the club mount extreme pressure on the Catalan club. They drew all three fixtures with Barcelona, conceding only one goal in the process.

At this rate, there is no reason why Atletico Madrid cannot be considered serious contenders for the Spanish La Liga. An intelligent manager, Simeone has managed to rein in his way-ward players and imbibe in them the will to fight for a common good. And what is the secret behind his success? In an interview with FourFourTwo, he suggested it is his ability to communicate with his players with passion and commitment that has enabled Atletico to transform itself..

ai???I try to live each day like itai??i??s the last, with enthusiasm and ideas which I communicate to my players. Football is my life (and) I always think they are going to fire me tomorrow, so I only focus on winning on Sunday. I live that way.ai???

Atletico Madrid has been an interesting ai???work-in-progressai??i?? with Simeone at the helm and only time will tell if the club can capitalize on their hard-work and lay the foundations for future success. But to dismiss their revival as a mere quirk, a statistical anomaly waiting to be exposed, will be a mistake most disrespectful to the game of football.

All statistics are based on the results as on 4th February 2013
