Play-offs for play-offs for play-offs, the Dutch system of qualification, relegation and promotion is mind-boggling, but we have it covered.
With the culmination of the ‘regulation time’ in the Eredivisie, arrived the plethora of ‘extra time’ – play-offs. With all of 5th placed Heerenveen til 8th placed AZ in contention for Europa League qualification and RKC Waalwijk and NEC Nijmegen in with one final chance to remain in the Eredivisie, despite finishing 3 points and only a point above destined-to-relegation, Roda JC, it promised to be a series of do-or-die two-legged matches to truly await in anticipation.
Europa League Qualification
The first of the play-offs saw AZ take on Heerenveen in a match up between Marco van Basten’s current side from Friesland, against the club he will manage next season; you could say he was in two minds over this match. However, his future side – AZ – beat Heerenveen convincingly in the first leg at the AFAS Stadion, thanks to goals from Ortiz, Gudelj and Berghuis. In the return leg, Heerenveen managed to win 1-0 but it was not enough as they trailed 1-3 on aggregate. One wonders whether the result could have been different had goal machine Alfred Finnbogasson not been taken off injured in the first leg and hence, remained unavailable for the second leg.
On the other side at the Euroborg, Groningen hit Vitesse – once title pretenders – late to get a 1-0 win, courtesy of a Burnet goal after a tame Christian Atsu penalty was saved by Groningen keeper Marco Bizot. The return leg at the GelroDome saw Peter van der Looi’s side run rout against Vitesse, condemning the ‘Hollywood on the Rhine’ to a 4-1 defeat. Chery opened the scoring but Propper hit back to keep the scores level, before Ajax-bound Richairo Zivkovic netted to give Groningen the lead again. As Vitesse pushed hard for goals and time ticked away, they found themselves caught on the counter by skilled winger Filip Kostic – quite a revelation this season, who sealed Vitesse’s chances for European football and bid them adieu, with his (em)brace.
The European play-off final saw AZ go against Groningen and the sides were equally matched in the first leg, playing out a 0-0 stalemate at Alkmaar. However, it was only midway through the first half when Groningen’s player of the play-offs – Tjaronn Chery – finished to give Groningen the lead yet again. Chery found the back of the net again, after a goal from Hatteboer doubled van der Looi’s side’s advantage.
Groningen will play in Europe for the first time in the last 7 years but will regret not holding on to Zivkovic for next season at least.
Relegation & Promotion
Going over to the other end of the Eredivisie table, where the bottom clubs faced off against the top clubs of the Eerste Divisie. At stake were two places in the 2014/15 edition of the Dutch top tier, with Willem II already having sealed it as Eerste Divisie champions.
Fortuna Sittard lost 7-2 on aggregate to De Graafschap and Eindhoven fell 3-2 to Sparta Rotterdam in an intense and tightly contested two-legged fixture. These were the play-offs in the Eerste Divisie in order to reach the play-offs with VVV and Excelsior for promotion to the Eredivisie, vs the 16th and 17th placed Eredivisie teams. RKC put up a determined fight against de Graafschap and emerged 2-1 winners, trying to retain their Eredivisie status. Meanwhile, NEC faltered and lost 1-4 over two legs to Sparta, who marched on. Both Dordrecht and Excelsior dispatched off VVV and Den Bosch 5-2, respectively.
This resulted in determining the last 4 teams that would scramble and scrape and fight on for a place in the Dutch top division next season – Excelsior, Sparta, Dordrecht and RKC. Excelsior established a 2-0 lead vs RKC in the first leg and it proved to be of great use – as a 2-2 draw was played out in the second leg, ensuring the Feyenoord affiliate club’s promotion. Dordrecht meanwhile went into their 2nd leg with Sparta on level ground, after a 2-2 draw However, it took them less than 6 minutes to fulfill their favorites tag, as they opened the scoring. Right before the break, a player loaned from Sparta to Dordrecht, scored against his parent club in a cruel twist of fate for Sparta, to double the lead. A second half filled with drama saw Sparta search for goals in desperation, a penalty awarded to Dordrecht – which ended up being saved by the substitute keeper after the No.1 had to be taken off due to an eye injury -, a curling strike to bring the game to 2-1 and then a red card for Sparta which killed their chances of an equaliser. Giovanni Korte was allowed to calmly score the 3rd goal in the 3-1 win after the goalkeeper had sprinted up field in an attempt to take advantage of his height and meet a corner, in a last minute measure to equalise.
Hence, Dordrecht and Excelsior will join Willem II Tilburg as the promoted clubs in next season’s Eredivisie, which promises much excitement, drama and topsy turvy table standings once again.
