The DEN network gifted Delhi a much needed football team to support. As ISL fluttered its wings. the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium witnessed huge crowds to witness the opening games. Delhi Dynamos started well, taking the cautious path to hover around the fourth position. But the recent downfall was expected, especially after the naive and old fashioned tactics which were deployed by the Dynamos head coach Van Heldhoven. Delhi Dynamos now see themselves rooted to the bottom of the table and with very little hope to qualify for the semi finals as Kerala Blasters visit on Sunday. Lets analyse and list top 5 reasons why the Delhi team hasn’t been up to the mark so far.
Del Piero:
The marquee player and former Juventus/Italy Captain has not delivered. Lets be blunt about it. This fact can’t be sugar coated with the amount pics/selfies the Italian has been captured in, with a broad smile of course. Compared to other players like Elano, Luis Garcia and even Capdevilla, Del Piero’s impact on the field has been zilch. Zero goals, backed up by Zero assists. It was not surprising that he was left on the bench against the humiliation Ai??FC Goa inflicted on the home side in Delhi. What Del Piero brings to the table is his rare exquisite first touch and control, which only works if you have people around you making runs. Apart from Junker, no one really is concerned about the aforementioned. Huge Problem. Apart from this, Del Piero paints a very tired and lazy picture on the field, which has to be frustrating for other team mates trying to prove their mettle. Free kicks which fizz out on their way to the goalkeeper has made up for Del Piero’s shots on target. Not Acceptable when you are one of the most expensive players in the the league.
Van Heldhoven:
The Belgian coach has got his tactics terribly wrong. The 4-1-3-2 formation- wherein the wingers are asked to do one and only job- pepper the non-dangerous (either too close to the opposition goalkeeper or too far away from a team mate) area of the pitch with sub standard balls. When Junker tucked in one from Steven Dias’ cross, it seemed to have worked for one, and probably the last time for the team in orange. Since then, the formation and most of the players on the pitch have remained the same, but the results haven’t. Adaptability and injection of some new players in the playing eleven anyone ? Apart from thinking around these questions- the coach is busy getting sent off.
The Curious Case of Junker & Skoubo:
Rollback to the Pre-ISL friendlies against Hindustan FC and Md. Sporting. Sans the ‘Marquee‘ signing, both the Danes rocked the show, scoring and assisting. But since the kick off against Pune City and a cameo against FC Goa away, both the Belgians have seen very less of on field action, surprisingly. Without a doubt, the competency level of ISL teams is much higher than the teams Delhi Dynamos chose to buckle up, but is that gap too high to not even try the combination again? Junker has notched up 500 minutes in the league, featuring in all eighth matches, whereas Skoubo has only featured in 6, for only 197 minutes.
Van Hout:
Another high profile, much talked about player in the Delhi Dynamos ranks is the Belgian custodian, who stands tall at 6 feet 10 Inches. Brilliant. By far one of the most noticeable Ai??pre-requisite Ai??in a goal keeper’s CV, but Van Hout clearly needs to do better. With a towering height, he quite evidently lacks in agility, when it comes to stopping shots. The Delhi defence has been guilty of leaking goals which adds to the attacking problems for Veldhoven, but Van Hout needs to pull his socks up if the team are entertaining any thoughts of qualifying for the play offs. The big Belgians’ performances have not been up to the mark, Ai??and with two more goalkeepers in the squad, especially Cech, Van Heldhoven should definitely reconsider all the options.

What about Delhi Dynamos fans? Where were they in the last game against FC Goa? Has the Delhi team, who were the first ones to come up with a team anthem and a Punch line, lost it’s connection with the fans midst bad results? Delhi Dynamos has terribly failed to capture the crowds and the fans attention has started to fade. With one of the best stadiums in the country at their disposal, the Dynamos have not attracted enough fans, nor the team has showcased exciting football. Leaving aside the Chennai game, DD have not shone enough to impress the fans, that too under lights.
So it’s for the Team to decide, whether to start winning matches or is the club happy winning twitter battles.
