After losing 3-4 to Barcelona in the last El Clasico, Real Madrid players made their disappointment with the referee quite clear after claiming that the officials are always against the Los Blancos when it came to the El Clasico.
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo spoke to the Press and claimed that the officials were biased against the Whites and wanted to keep Barcelona alive in the title race and hence awarded them two controversial penalties.
“We played against 12 men. It’s always the same thing. They just don’t let us play. They probably wanted to keep Barcelona alive in La Liga.”
Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos was sent off in the second half for a challenge on Neymar, one that the defender claimed was wrongfully awarded. Ronaldo believes that the officials in Spain do not want to see Real Madrid win the La Liga and hence the decisions went against the Los Blancos.
“There are a lot of things. It makes you wonder…they probably don’t want Real Madrid to win La Liga. If BarAi??a had lost tonight, they would’ve been dead but they probably needed to keep them alive in La Liga.”
“I’ve been here for five years and I’m already starting to understand how things work. Sometimes you just can’t do all the work from the inside, but also from the outside. Since I arrived, the referees have never helped Real Madrid. Every year it’s the same thing.”
Sergio Ramos seemed to echo his Madrid team-mate and backed his claims of the referees being biased against Real Madrid.
“If they wanted to balance La Liga they definitely got it but Real Madrid will keep fighting for it.”
“There are things you can’t fight against, that are all calculated and you can’t do anything about it.Ai??It’s clear that when you’re the biggest team in the world you produce some envy. Enough is enough. We’re tired of it.”
He backed Ronaldoai??i??s comments saying that he along with the other players echo the Portugueseai??i??s sentiments.
“If Cristiano says that they don’t want us to win La Liga it’s because we all think that. There’s things you can’t fight against.”
Barcelona captain Xavi naturally disagreed with the comments and believes that Barcelona won because they were the better team. He dismissed Ronaldoai??i??s comments and even claimed that his penalty was rightly awarded and spared the referee any criticism.
“Cristiano is wrong. His criticism is harsh. Barcelona were the better team, we played better than Real and that shows in the result”.
“As far as I’m concerned they were all penalties, including Dani Alves’ challenge on Cristiano, at least from what you could see out on the pitch.”
It is understandable that the Real Madrid players were outraged by the refereeai??i??s decisions, most of which did go against them. However to blame the referee and call him biased does show an unsporting nature on behalf of Real Madrid. All the three penalties were poor decisions including the one on Cristiano Ronaldo. And Real Madrid would have gladly taken the 3 points based on that penalty if they were given the option. To call the referee biased is a bit harsh on Undiano.
Real Madrid will be facing Barcelona in the Copa del Rey finals and can possibly meet later in the Champions League if they manage to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament. The Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo made it clear that he did not want Undiano to be appointed as the referee for the finals and believes that Real Madrid can still win the La Liga.
“Hopefully we won’t be getting this referee in the Copa del Rey final. We’ll try to win La Liga against everybody. They don’t like seeing Real Madrid on top. I still hope we will win La Liga. We lost the game but we’re still one point ahead.”
Whether Real Madrid can win the league or not should be reserved for another debate, what is quite clear is that the league is indeed evenly matched and is set for a nerve-racking finish this May.
