The City of Joy, Kolkata is home to the biggest clubs in Indian Football – Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan SportingAi??and the city is often referred to as the mecca of Indian Football. However poor planning, politics played by officials and several off field distractions have meant that the National Football League or the now I-League has stayed outside Bengal for past one decade. At the start of the season several pundits had tipped the I-League title to return to Kolkata as East Bengal had the same set of players which reached the AFC Cup semi-finals and Karim Bencherifa was into his second season with Mohun Bagan. A look at the I-League table shows that none of the Kolkata clubs are in the top 5 though East Bengal have three games in hand.
A primary reason behind this has been the poor planning and lack of vision shown by the clubs officials. Barring United SC, the three big clubs played their first teams in the Kolkata Football League which led to player fatigue and burnout. Coach Armando Colaco has been very vocal about the club playing a lot of games and expressed his displeasure at taking part in the IFA Shield. Putting this in perspective, the Ai??Federation Cup ended on the 25th January and the I-League was scheduled to resume on the 15th of February with the IFA Shield sandwiched in between. Barring the Kolkata clubs, all other I-League clubs decided to give the tournament a miss focusing on player recovery and eyeing a strong finish in the I-League. The IFA Shield resulted in a cramped schedule for the Kolkata clubs and since the restart of I-League post the IFA Shield, both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have failed to win a match. Mohun Bagan have managed only three points in four matches, United SC Ai??andAi??East Bengal have earned two points in three matchesAi??Ai??and Mohammedan SportingAi??have garnered four points in the the four matches.Ai??Poor performances at the business end of the league has meant that the Kolkata clubs have slipped down the table. Despite winning the IFA Shield, Mohammedan SportingAi??coach Sanjoy Sen has complained of player burnout and injuries.Ai??For East Bengal Uga Okpara, James Moga, Ryuiji Sueoka and Mehtab Hossain have been injured at some point or the other.
In sharp contrast, clubs in Goa use Goa League to try out young players and groom them for the I-League. Pune FC is also known to field its U-19 team in the local leagues. These clubs focus more on the I-League rather than the local league and as a result these clubs have outperformed their Kolkata counterparts in the I-League consistently. Colaco’ s attempts to inculcate this philosophy at East Bengal has failed with the club officials turning down his request of not playing in the IFA Shield and the former Dempo coach has often vented out his frustration in front of the media.

Lack of patience from fans and the officials is another major factor which has negatively affected the performance of the clubs. DespiteAi??bailing Mohun Bagan out for trouble last season and doing a reasonable job this season, Karim Bencherifa finds himself under pressure every now and then. The club officials and fans need to give time to the officials to develop the team. Derrick PereiraAi??took Pune FC from a newly promoted club to the second in the span of four years and the Kolkata based clubs need to realize that the short term view has hurt them badly. Despite winning multiple titles with Dempo, Armando Colaco has it found tough in Kolkata with fans expecting him to win every match. First Marcus Falopa and now Armando Colaco have faced unnecessary comparisons with Trevor Morgan from the fans which has not made their task easier. The officials have also been accused of interfering in team selection polices and not allowing the coach to function as he wants to with Mohammedan Sporting being a prime example of this. Despite winning the Durand Cup and performing decently in the I-League,Ai??Bola Masood was never allowed to select players as per his assessment and was forced to play certain players.
Another factor which has led to the downfall of Kolkata clubs this season has been the demigod status accorded to the foreign players in the clubs. Chidi Edeh and Uga Okpara for East Bengal as well as Odafa Okolie arrived late for the pre-season and surprisingly have struggled in the I-League. These influential players have often been involved in arguments with the coaches and fellow players and have turned up late for practice as was pointed out by exAi??Mohammedan Sporting Bola MasoodAi??on a social media site recently. These players have been often accused of playing politics in the team as well and often enjoy perks that the fellow players don’t. The well documented incident of Odafa Okolie venting out his frustration on young Pritam Kotal after the Federation Cup semi-final loss is an example of this.
East Bengal in particular have only gone down from the lofty heights they attained under Trevor Morgan last season. First Marcus Falopa and now Armando Colaco have failed to strike a rapport with the players, resulting in unrest dressing room. The clubs has flattered to deceive in the I-League and their performances have been far from satisfactory. First Sueoka and Chidi were involved in an argument with Falopa and now again again certain players are not in sync with Colaco. Colaco has even gone on record and said that the players are still stuck in the Trevor Morgan mode and have failed to adopt to his style of play. He even went to the extent of terming his players as selfish saying that they don’t want to pass the ball to the other players. Clearly things are not going well in the East Bengal and as a result the team has struggled on the field.Ai??Mohun Bagan andAi??Mohammedan Sporting have had their fair share of off field issue as well.
There is no denying that the Kolkata clubs have a loyal fan base unlike some of the other I-League clubs but the club officials need to follow the modern methods of running a club otherwise the Kolkata clubs will continue to slip down in terms of their performances.
