Brendan Rodgers has insisted that Liverpool‘s summer transfers will show intent and make sure that the Reds are genuine title contender’s next season.
In the Premier League era, there have been two instances where the Merseyside club finished second in the league. But the next season proved to be distastrous on both occasions as the Anfield outfit made mistakes in the transfer market and failed to follow up on the wonderful season before. The two seasons in question are 2001-02 under Gerard Houllier, as the Reds slipped to fifth place in 2002-03, and to seventh in 2009-10, after a glorious 2008-09 season ended with the Reds marginally missing out on the title.
Liverpool were hugely successful in the recently concluded season. Not only did the club make its long awaited return to Champions League, after five long years, it also managed an unexpected title surge, which unfortunately ended in a two point loss to eventual winners Manchester City. However, the effort put in by the club, and especially young manager Brendan Rodgers received unanimous acclaim. The Norther Irishman has insisted that there won’t be a repeat of these two seasons that saw some woeful incoming and outgoing transfers. He agreed that with the added demands of the Champions League, Liverpool will need a much greater strength in its squad . Liverpool have to make sure that the club also maintains its footing in the league and make another title challenge, but this time it should be pre-planned, and pre-emptive measures should be taken to ensure that the club doesn’t lose out on it due to a weak squad.
Rodgers has already snapped up Southampton and England striker Rickie Lambert for A?4million and Germany Under-21 midfielder Emre Can for A?10million from Bayer Leverkusen.
There are several deals in the pipelines, as daily reports suggest and Rodgers has claimed that he is looking at players who have the ‘hunger’ and ‘ambition’ to play and prove their worth for Liverpool FC

Rodgers is well aware that Liverpool’s summer signings have to be of that quality that helps the 18 time league winners with the required spark to make a conscious title challenge. The Reds’ summer signings were not great considering the club got in eight players in all and only Simon Mignolet and Mamadou Sakho made any real contribution to the club’s title challenge.
It has been said for a while now that the club needs starters- players who would come and can be directly accommodated in the starting 11. When asked if he would be fetching players of a higher pedigree and potential, he said,Ai??ai???We have to be. Itai??i??s one where we just need good players.Ai??The position we were in last summer was that we were losing players who were cover players and it was difficult for us to bring in starters.Ai??This year the squad will change around.
