Brazil Effective But Not Bedazzling- World Cup 2014 Opener Analysis

Will Brazil finally step up their game?

Hosts Brazil beat Croatia 3-1 to kick off the tournament in style. Luis Felipe Scolari’s men had to win the match in front of their home crowd to justify their tag of being the potential winners of the tournament while Niko Kovac’s men wanted to put up a good fight and possibly cause an upset.

The scoreline basically confirmed their ‘favorites’ tag, but their cause was made easier with some abysmal refereeing as well as helpful goalkeeping on the part of Stipe Pletikosa.

Brazil

Obviously, everyone went into the match expecting Brazil to win the match comfortably, Neymar to score a hat-trick and Brazil to start the tournament in flamboyant fashion. But things didn’t exactly go as planned for the hosts. Croatia coach Niko Kovac made sure he set his team to make the Brazilians’ job very difficult.

Scolari fielded an expected team with Paulinho and Gustavo being the midfielder anchors, Neymar playing as a number 10, and Oscar and Hulk alongside on the right and left, respectively.

The Brazilians got off to a very shaky start. They were leftAi??frustrated, as Croatia organized themselves well in the neat 4-4-2 fashion. Brazil struggled to gain any sort of momentum initially. This was only made worse as Marcelo put the ball in his own net from a delightful Ivica Olic low cross from the left in the 11th minute (Note: Jelavic should have scored that. He miscued the strike).

Brazil was initially unable to utilize the wings well. As mentioned before, Hulk and Oscar were on either sides, and Neymar was used in the middle. But after a while, the Croatian midfield and defence paid most of their attention to Neymar, enabling the Brazilian wingers to use the flanks. Hulk though acted as the second striker for the team, but proved to be less threatening than the Croatians would have imagined.

As the game progressed, Brazil found their feet and started showing exactly why they’ve been regarded as such a menacing team. Neymar effectively went past Sime Vrsaljko by the goal-line (it is up to debate whether the ball had been run out of play), crossed low and from the clearance Oscarai??i??s thrashing left-footed shot was saved by Pletikosa. Soon after,Ai??Neymar was booked for what looked like a deliberate arm into the face of Luka Modric. He was shown a yellow card which left the Croatian team fuming for it not being a red, although replays suggested that there was not quite enough malice in the foul for a sending off. The Brazilian tipped to score the first goal of the tournament ended up with the first booking. But if he didn’t score the first goal of the World Cup, he did end up scoring Brazil’s first goal. The Barcelona attackerAi??leveled the score after two minutes, but it was Oscar who had done all the labor in the build up of the goal. Neymar fired a low, long range strike whichAi??crept beyond Pletikosaai??i??s dive. The Croatian goalkeeper’s effort looked a little weak, but Neymar’s shot had excellence written all over it.

Neymar scored a brace in the opening match- Potential Golden Boot contender?

Brazil got the lead in the second half through a Neymar penalty.Ai??Dejan Lovren had a very gentle hand on Fredai??i??s shoulder in the penalty box but the striker obviously decided to make the most of it. He spun around dramatically before falling back on Earth and it was enough for Yuichi Nishimura, the referee, to point to the spot. This was after the Japanese caused a lot of laughs as he ran till the by-line to point to the spot and give Lovren a yellow.

Eventually, Oscar’s audacious toe-poke from outside the area beat the Croatian keeper to make it 3-1 in stoppage time and seal the match for the Brazilians, who must have heaved a sigh of relief.

Scolari would have to resolve one glaring problem visible through the course of the match- the space behind the attacking full-backs, especially Alves in this context. The Barcelona man got forward successfully a lot, but left a huge hole at the back, which could have been exploited on another day.

The hosts, even after winning with a two goal margin, did not look like potential winners of the competition. Even if it was probably the nervousness of the first match of the tournament, the pressure of being the hosts etc., Scolari’s boys will have to look more comprehensive and competent in the next two group matches – against Mexico and Cameroon. Both these countries are capable of causing an upset on their day.

Croatia

Niko Kovac had made it clear before the match that his side was going to approach the match with optimism and not become intimidated with the pressure of facing the potential winners of the competition. Kovac made true of his promise as his lineup included two playmakers- Modric and Rakitic, and no holding midfielder- injuredAi??Ivan Mocinic was replaced on the eve of the match with Hamburg’s Milan Badelj, but the player was said to be nursing a groin injury himself and did not feature in the team. Mateo Kovacic, the promising Inter midfielder lined up aside Modric and Rakitic.Ai??With Mandzukic missing the game, it was veteran Ivica Olic, who led the attack alongside Nikica Jelavic. It was a little surprising though, to see Jelavic get the nod ahead of Eduardo, who was more favored to start on the wings or as a second striker, slightly behind Olic.

Croatia dominated the start of the match and rightly got rewarded with a goal, even though it was a Brazilian putting the ball in his own net. It was a delightful low cross from Ivica Olic to feed Hull striker Jelavic, which should have been scored. Regardless of the process, Croatia got the lead. After that Croatia didn’t create many chances till the tail end of the game. They were mostly occupied with the defence as they tried to negate the influece of Neymar, Oscar and Hulk. However, they did not ‘park the bus’ and regularly moved in front, trying to create attacks.Ai??The basic kind of strategy- to crowd out Neymar whenever he took up position worked well for most parts of the game.

The Brazilian equalizer was after Oscar beat two Croatians trying to stop him and the Chelsea player passed the ball to Neymar who drilled a low shot. Pletikosa’s effort to save the shot was a week one, but the Brazilians got the equalizer.

Till half-time Croatia were on the back foot and basically lost all the momentum. Brazil created chances but could not get the lead.

Immediately after the break, Kovac’s men looked more alive. There was sharp interplay in the second and last thirds of the pitch for Croatia as their talisman Luka Modric seized the midfield. He, along with Barcelona bound Ivan Rakitic, ensured that Croatia were on the front-foot and they succeeded in keeping Brazil in their own half. For Brazil’s part, they were quite happy to do so, and probably hoped to hit Croatia on the counter.

The European nation was successful in keeping the scores tied till the 71st minute. But the lead then went in Brazil’s way and Croatia were unfortunate in the process. The penalty given for that goal, was an absolutely terrible decision. There was hardly a heavy touch on Fred by Lovren, but the referee thought otherwise and ended up favoring the hosts. Pletikosa dived in the right direction and should have saved Neymar’s penalty from there, but could only get a touch to it. The penalty too, was not a very convincing one as Neymar’sAi??stuttering Ai??run-up was followed by the ball being hit at a very savable height.

Mandzukic was sorely missed by Croatia

From then on, it was basically Croatia dominating the match. They finally had their moment in the 89th minute, but the referee made another terrible decision.Ai??What happened was, Olic stood in front of Julio Cesar and won the header upon whichAi??Rebic struck the ball towards the net which was then blocked by David Luiz, but Perisic netted home the rebound.Ai??Nishimura thought that the part which began the goal, Olic’s winning aerial duel, was a foul and the goal was incorrectly (up for debate) disallowed. Oscar then scored a wonderful goal for the hosts and sealed the match in Brazil’s favour.

Croatia would be hoping to win the remaining group matches to progress to the knockout stage of the tournament which is not going to be easy. However, the return of Badelj and more importantly Mandzukic, would certainly give them the confidence of getting the three points from each of those games. Kovac would need to address the problem of his side being spectacular in moments as a 90 minute continuous performance exactly how Croatia performed in the last 15 minutes or so could easily see them winning the matches.

Man of the Match- Oscar

The young Chelsea attacking midfielder was absolutely outstanding through the course of the match. He worked tirelessly and was rightly rewarded with a goal (He was involved in the other two). When all the hype was about Neymar, it was actually Oscar who shone in the match.

Flop of the Match-Ai??Stipe Pletikosa

The Croatian goalkeeper started the game well, making some delightful saves initially which included a superb one from an Oscar effort. But the goalkeeper could have done better in his effort to save Neymar’s equalizer, as he was a little slow to react to it. He got both hands to Neymar’s shaky penalty, but shockingly enough, did not save it.

Special Mention-Ai??Yuichi Nishimura

The Japanese referee had an appalling game. Famous for sending offAi??Brazilai??i??s Felipe Melo in the 2010 quarter-final defeat to the Netherlands, Nishimura made many debatable decisions. He stopped the game too often and his poor game was eventually illustrated with the penalty he awarded to the hosts and the disallowed goal after Olic’s wrongly adjudged foul.
