The last time Brazil lost two consecutive competitive matches at home was way back in 1940, when they lost 3-0 to Argentina and 4-3 to Uruguay. Today, a 4-3 loss looks almost benign, given that Brazil have wrapped up their 2014 World Cup campaign with back-to-back defeats representing a cumulative 10-1. What began as a fairytale journey has found a grim ending.
Match Recap and Highlights
Against Netherlands on Saturday, Scolari made no fewer than six changes to his starting lineup. Fred was dropped for Jo, Hulk for Ramires, Bernard for Willian, Fernandinho for Paulinho, Marcelo for Maxwell, and — in a somewhat surprising move, given that David Luiz was also available to be dropped — Dante came off for returning captain Thiago Silva.
Silva’s absence had been largely cited as a reason for Brazil’s shambolic defending against Germany. But his return against the Netherlands soon threw those citations into doubt. Two minutes in, Silva chased a rampaging Arjen Robben to the edge of his own penalty box; having failed to stop him by conventional methods, Silva opted to pull the winger down in plain sight of the referee. It should have been a straight red and a free kick. Instead Silva saw yellow, and Netherlands were awarded a penalty. Robin van Persie converted from the spot, and Brazil were down 0-1 with just three minutes on the clock.
Fifteen minutes later, Robben was at it again, playing the ball up for De Guzman (who, on replay, was clearly offside). De Guzman crossed into the box and found nobody but David Luiz, and the A?50m defender bungled what should have been a straightforward clearance straight back to Daley Blind, who’d been waiting unmarked in front of goal. Brazil 0-2 Netherlands.
Once again, the home team were booed off the pitch at halftime. Once again, they turned up after the break not doing much better. It was as dire as any World Cup match had been. Robben & co. carved up the Brazil backline at will. Fernandinho, coming on for Luis Gustavo, seemed to have been instructed to foul as many people as possible. Meanwhile, Oscar got stomped on in the penalty box, and instead of a penalty, received a yellow card for his trouble. Daley Blind and Jordy Clasie were both subbed off due to injury, while Dirk Kuyt stoically carried on despite a bloody head wound.
Brazil had a few chances to pull themselves back into the game, but nothing came of the luckless frontline’s attempts. Then, forty seconds into stoppage time, Netherlands put the final nail in Brazil’s coffin as Wijnaldum smashed yet another goal past Julio Cesar.
It is easy to blame or praise after a comprehensive result, especially one with such convenient narratives built in. But some analyses will necessarily be more coincidental than critical, and some questions still remain unanswered.
1. Is Louis van Gaal a tactical genius?
This may be the most over-rated and over-debated question of the summer. From the Netherlands’ 5-1 hammering of Spain to Tim Krul replacing Jasper Cillessen for the penalty shoot-out against Costa Rica, Van Gaal’s tactical decisions have been the true centerpiece of the Dutch national team’s improbable run to a third-place finish.
Aesthetics or not, Van Gaal’s switch from the traditional 4-3-3 to a more defensive 5-3-2 has produced results. Results which produced more criticism than acclaim, perhaps. But in the words of the manager himself, “give me a definition of attacking football” — a 5-3-2 is not necessarily a negative strategy. Rather, for the Netherlands at this World Cup, it has been a strategy to maximize the abilities in what was, frankly, a limited squad. The wealth of Dutch talent in attack is well known; their defensive options are much more modest. With Strootman out and no certainty in quality at left back, Van Gaal worked with what he had and employed tactics to make the most of hardworking players such as Ron Vlaar and Dirk Kuyt.
But Van Gaal’s insistence on sticking with the 5-3-2 throughout the tournament has not come without its faults. In the knockout rounds, the Netherlands created 53 chances and committed 106 fouls. Compare that to the other three semifinalists: Argentina created 79 chances, Germany 68, and Brazil 70. The 5-3-2 weighted the Dutch towards defense, especially against Argentina when up to six players at a time were committed to deal with Messi — and the bias showed, as the Netherlands went 120 minutes without scoring, and achieved the astounding stat of 0 successful passes into the Argentina box during the entire first half.
In hindsight, it seemed only a matter of time before Van Gaal’s tactical stubbornness backfired against a team good enough both to trouble Cillessen and to neutralize Robben.
The Netherlands’ 0-3 victory over Brazil capped a very solid World Cup for a team that many had written off before the tournament’s start. Robben is to be congratulated on a tremendous performance. Kuyt as wingback has been a revelation. The team have laid a roadmap of hope at the 2014 World Cup. But it’s difficult, still, to know what to make of Van Gaal at this tournament. Could the Netherlands have made the final, had they opted to take a chance on scoring during regular time? And would they have beaten Brazil, had Germany not dismantled the home side just four days prior?
All told, the Netherlands’ bronze medal is, frankly, more due to Brazil’s feckless fumblings than to any tactical transcendence on Van Gaal’s part. The manager goes to his new job at Old Trafford, leaving behind a legacy in resourcefulness and strength of personality — but no clear answers as to what, exactly, the Netherlands’ tactical future should be.
2. How much did Brazil miss Neymar?
The flip side to the question of how much Van Gaal’s tactics contributed to the Netherlands’ win is, of course, the question of how much Brazil’s poor showing contributed to their 0-3 loss. Thiago Silva’s return brought little discernible defensive stability. Brazil still looked shellshocked from Tuesday’s hammering, and the decision to let Neymar sit on the bench as a morale booster may have backfired — how would you like to be Willian, after all, and constantly be reminded that there’s a guy over there whom everybody would rather see playing instead of you?
That said, even three Neymars may not have been able to save Brazil from their sad fate. As improbable as they were in attack, it was the Brazilian defense that truly spelled the home team’s doom. The amount of space afforded to the Dutch attack would not have passed muster against even a team like Greece. Against the likes of Van Persie and Robben, it was just asking for trouble.
What did not help was David Luiz’s spectacular penchant for picking the exact wrong 50-yard pass at every possible opportunity. In his defense, Luiz’s poor positioning and effervescent error-rate is nothing news-worthy. He had two appalling games against Germany and Netherlands, yes; but he also put in that unbelievable free kick against Costa Rica, and he’s had a good tournament, even before that. One poor defender cannot altogether account for how Brazil played against the Netherlands.
It has long been said that this Brazilian side are reliable rather than resplendent, organized rather than orgasmic. However, against the Netherlands, Brazil were neither reliable nor organized — and it translated into conceding the most ridiculous of chances, and being unable to make anything of the few times a long pass from Luiz actually found someone up front.
Would Neymar have saved Brazil, had he been fit? It is possible he would have scored the chances Oscar and Hulk missed. But it is also entirely possible that Brazil would have still conceded 3 goals, because there are not enough Neymars in all the world to make up for a team that leaves twenty yards of space for Robben to run into and leisurely pick out his next key pass.
3. Should FIFA invest in instant replay technology?
An abundance of Neymars may not have saved Brazil, but an bit of better refereeing, on the other hand, might have done. FIFA has invested in goal line technology in recognition that, sometimes, it’s a bit hard to know exactly what happened in one particular split second of a football match in full flow. Even if you’re a trained referee. But football matches are not just decided by those moments when the ball cross the goal line. They are, often as not, decided by incidents that happen in the middle of the pitch.
When Thiago Silva cynically pulled Arjen Robben down, it was a clear foul. What was not clear, was why the referee thought it had happened inside the penalty box, when on replay Robben had been already been falling while still outside the line. Perspective is a funny thing, sometimes.
When Robben played the ball up for De Guzman, in the lead-up to the Netherlands’ second goal, De Guzman was evidently offside on video replay. The referee’s assistant, on the other hand, did not see the positional mismatch and failed to void the play.
In a way, it is lazy analysis to blame the referee for the result. A team never wants to be in a position, after all, where one bad call can decide the course of their match; the fact that a team could be in such a precarious position is, already, a sign of their failings. That said, Brazil have not been the only team this tournament to suffer from poor refereeing decisions, from offside calls to dodgy penalty-baiting falls. Perhaps a bit more technological advance is needed, in the interest of minimizing human error where human error should not be.
Other sports also employ HawkEye and video surveillance technology — not only for line calls, as FIFA’s goal line technology does, but for instant video replay of player positioning to aid referees in deciding a controversial call. Now, this system works slightly better in games like cricket or American football, where there is plenty of built-in downtime, and play isn’t quite the chaotic continuity that constitutes the 90+ minutes of a football match.
Whether video replay is viable or even desirable, ultimately, is up for debate. But given what we’ve seen at the 2014 World Cup, at least it seems to be becoming a debate worth having.
