Brazil will now face Colombia in an all-South American quarter final, but Luiz Felipe Scolari will know that his side will have to improve a lot following another unimpressive performance against Chile ai??i?? the goal post was all that has kept their dreams alive.
It started well for the Brazilians in this game as David Luiz provided them with an early lead from a corner. The newly signed PSG defender drifted to the far post and claimed the goal as the ball appeared to have deflected off him when Gonzalo Jara attempted a back heel clearance. Replays however showed that it was more of an own goal by the Chilean defender, although the goal was credited to Luiz.
But Chile responded quickly to that goal as Alexis Sanchez scored the equalizer in the 32nd minute. The goal arrived from Brazilian throw-in in their own half and a defensive blunder between Hulk and Luiz. Eduardo Vargas won the ball and set-up Sanchez, who finished calmly scoring his second goal of the tournament.
It was a struggle for Brazil in the second half as they tried to break down the resilient Chilean defence. Both Fred and Jo disappointed upfront as Scolari seemed to have run out of options. Jorge Sampaoli meanwhile has to substitute two of his key players due to fitness concerns ai??i?? Arturo Vidal and Gary Medel ai??i?? as the match headed towards extra-time and penalties.
Chilean substitute Mauricio Pinilla came close to winning it for his nation in the dying minutes, but the cross bar kept him out. The 30-year-old was set up by Sanchez and his powerful drive beat Cesar in goal, but was saved by the cross bar.
As the match headed into penalties, Pinilla and Sanchez were kept out by the heroic Julio Cesar and that put Chile on the verge, but Chelsea winger Willian failed to hit the target, while Bravo kept out Hulk. As Neymar scored to put Brazil ahead by 3-2, Gonzalo Jara had to score to keep Chile in the game. But his bad luck in front of the goal continued as his penalty hit the post and went wide.
Brazil manager Luiz Felipe Scolari was delighted with the result and insisted that he expected a tough game like this against Chile.
“This was expected. We had expressed the feeling seven to eight months ago when we heard the draw, that we’d have trouble.
“It was a very balanced game, although we conceded a goal due to something that’s not acceptable at this level. We had equal possession and attempts.
“Will it be we have people dying of heart attacks? It depends on your medical check-ups! It’s a very emotional World Cup.” ai??i?? Scolari said after the match.
Meanwhile, Julio Cesar couldnai??i??t contain his emptions and broke into tears after his heroic performance in goal.
“I gave an interview four years ago and I cried (when Holland eliminated Brazil). I was very sad but now I am crying because I am happy.
