Most of his selection was expected, although many would argue that he has left out some names who deserved to be in the squad. Experienced campaigners like Ronaldinho and Kaka were ignored, despite the duo putting in some good performances recently. But perhaps one of the biggest surprises was the exclusion of Atletico Madrid left back Filipe Luis.
The 28-year-old has produced some wonderful performances for the Spanish side and has been one of the most consistent full backs in Europe this season. Many would argue that he deserved a place in the squad ahead of PSG left back Maxwell. One of the prime reason behind Atletico Madridai??i??s success this season has been their solid back four, but Luis and his defensive partner Miranda didnai??i??t find a place in Scolariai??i??s squad.
In the midfield, the selection of Ramires is questionable as well as the Chelsea midfielder has had an underwhelming season at Stamford Bridge. He does bring a lot of energy and endeavour on the table, but with the likes of Gustavo, Paulinho and Fernandinho in the squad, Scolari could have opted for a more attacking option in Liverpool midfielder Coutinho or PSG attacker Lucas Moura. Coutinho has had a fine season in England and would have provided a lot of creativity to the squad ai??i?? along with being an able alternative to Oscar.
Scolari didnai??i??t have too many forwards to choose from, especially with Diego Costa opting to play for Spain. Julio Cesar remains his first choice goalkeeper in the squad, but a strong case could have been made for the inclusion of Fluminense custodian Diego Cavalieri and Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves, who recently produced a wonderful performance against Real Madrid. But Scolari normally sticks with players he personally trusts and at times that take precedence over form as well.
