Arsenal FC manager Arsene Wenger has praised the attributes of Southampton youngster Calum Chambers, revealing why he has signed the Englishman.
News about Arsenalai??i??s move for Southampton youngster Calum Chambers came out of the blue two days back. Reports suggested that the Gunners are close to completing a A?16 million deal for the young right back and now Wenger has praised Chambers in an interview, confirming their move to sign him.
Calum Chambers was promoted to the first team squad in 2012 and since then he has impressed with every appearance he has made. In the 2012-2013 season he made only one first team appearance as Nathaniel Clyne was the first choice right back for his side, but last season he got plenty of opportunities and made 22 appearances in the league.
Chambers has also progress through the England youth ranks and has already made 18 appearances for the England U-19 side. The 19-year-old is rated highly and is expected to break into the national team sooner rather than later.
Recent reports suggested that Arsenal and Southampton have agreed a fee of A?16 million for the transfer of Calum Chambers and the youngster will become the fourth signing this season for the Gunners. Despite the arrival of Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United, Arsenal were in the market for another right back with Carl Jenkinson expected to move out on loan.
Moreover, Chambersai??i?? biggest strength is his versatility; the Englishman can play as a right back, center back, defending midfielder or as a right winger. It is believed that Chambers will mostly be used as a center back by Wenger with Thomas Vermaelen expected to leave the club this summer. He will also keep Debuchy on his toes by pushing for the right back role if needed.
