According to reports in Portugal, Arsenal FC have failed with an initial bid of A?24m for Sporting CP midfielder William Carvalho, but are likely to return with an improved offer.
Arsenal are in the market for a new defensive midfielder as Arsene Wenger looks to strengthen his squad for the news season. Latest reports in Portuguese media states that the London club have failed with an initial bid for Sporting CP midfielder William Carvalho and are likely to return with an improved offer.
William Carvalho was promoted to the first team squad in 2011, when he made his debut at the age of 18 in a match against Vitoria S.C. After having successful loan spells at Fatima and Cercle Brugge, Carvalho established himself in the starting line-up of the Portuguese club last season under former manager Leonardo Jardim.
Carvalho produced some wonderful performances in the midfield for Sporting as they finished runners-up in the league. Carvalho is strongly built and breaks up play wonderfully and has a good passing range to boost. His consistent performances earned him a place in the World Cup squad where he played his first game as a substitute against USA, when he replaced the injured Andre Almeida. He started the next game against Ghana and helped his side to a 2-1 win, which sadly wasnai??i??t enough for them to progress through to the next round.
But Carvalho has been grabbing the headlines long before the World Cup with a host of European clubs monitoring his progress in Portugal. Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Inter Milan and Real Madrid have all been linked with a move for the 22-year-old defensive midfielder. But Sportingai??i??s high valuation of the player warded off interest from most of these clubs.
Latest reports from Portugal suggest that Arsenal have joined the race for his signature and have failed with an initial bid of A?24m for the midfielder. The Gunners not only fell short of the A?35mAi??release clause in Carvalhoai??i??s contract, but also wanted to pay the transfer fee in two instalments. Sporting on the other hand want cash up front and are unlikely to sell him for anything less than the release clause.
Carvalho has a long-term contract with the Portuguese club and that puts them in good position to negotiate a good deal. Arsenal though are likely to return with an improved offer and are confident that they can negotiate with Sporting for a fee less than the release clause.
Arsene Wenger is in the market for a new defensive midfielder and have already been linked with the likes of Sami Khedira, Lars Bender and Morgan Schneiderlin. Arsenal are likely to fall back upon Bender and Schneiderlin if Sporting is unwilling to budge from their demands.
