We take a look at why Arsenal FC are in need of a new left winger in the summer.
So why are Arsenal struggling? The common answer is either Giroud, Arteta or Wenger. Arsene Wenger will probably stay at the club and despite the flaws he has, that endless debate of him staying or leaving will continue. Arteta meanwhile has his limitations but has been a great servant to the club and the fact that Arsenal aren’t particularly keen on extending his contract is a sign of things to come and a midfielder is surely high up the priority list when the Gunners go shopping in the close season. That brings us to the striker conundrum and this one is even more treacherous than the manager on. Arsenal Football Club have had some legendary strikers in their illustrious history, from Ted Drake to Thierry Henry, to Ian Wright to Dennis Bergkamp, the Gunners have been blessed with some fiery strikers so it’s obvious that the fans have started to grow impatient with the current bunch. But such is the obviousness of the issue at hand that it is indeed funny that there hasn’t been a fix to the problem despite 2 windows passing by. Anyway the glaring issues will most probably be addressed after the way the season has turned on it’s head in one month from hope to despair. One position however which remains not so obvious but could definitely improve is the left wing.
Arsene Wenger has always preferred to field a playmaker on either wing instead of playing 2 direct players either side. Last night while Lucas Podolski started on the left, Tomas Rosicky featured on the right. Last season and even in the early parts of this season with Ozil fit, it was Cazorla who slotted on the left as the creative player with either Gnabry, Chamberlain or Walcott being the direct sources on the right. In earlier seasons too, Nasri, Rosicky and even with the always creative Pires, Wenger had a creative outlet playing wide. But probably with resources constrained and those wide creative players unable to influence games from the wings as much, there is probably a need to chop and change. This season is out of hand in terms of personnel but with the transfer window rearing it’s head immediately after the season end, Arsene Wenger might look for a proper left wing forward. A player who not only has goals in him but also with more pace and acceleration than the ones who cut in and crowd the middle. This change in approach would be based on the strong reason that there are very few goals in the team once a couple of players are taken out as has been the case this season. The natural argument might be that the problem pivots at the striker who isn’t scoring many himself. However true, the point that’s being missed is that even the best of strikers will go through barren spells and a team that has multiple genuine goal threats is the one that is worth it’s salt. Arsenal’s season is a perfect example. Only 3 players have scored more than 5 goals, compared to 5 players each for Chelsea and Man City and 6 players with 5 or more goals for Liverpool. One might point that one of the 3 players to have scored 5+ is Podolski so why demand a new left winger when he is doing well? Maybe because the numbers are flattering and do not paint the full picture?
Podolski has started just 10 league games this season and yesterday’s performance probably sums him up in a nutshell. 2 goals and no contribution apart from that. That is how the German’s season has been and one of the reasons Wenger won’t start him when all fit. Arsenal in the yesteryear were always appreciated for their team play and beautiful buildup. With Podolski in the side those quick neat interchanges get strangled and the tempo drops. Make no mistake most of Arsenal’s goals in the past 5 games have had him involved, be it the assist for Flamini’s equalizer against City or the goal and assist against Swansea. But that doesn’t excuse the fact that his overall game is limited and below par to be a threat on the long term. With a left foot as strong as Thor’s hammer, Podolski’s usefulness is restricted to the box where he gets to take shots at goal for fun. Add to that he goes missing for huge chunks of the game. Be it against West Ham, Stoke or even Sunderland, he just goes invisible and retorts to pointless crossing from wide areas. Remarkably, despite his poor crossing, with 2 of his 3 successful crosses all season, he has earned assists. (West Ham and Man City) The lack of influence from one wing makes the team predictable and the fact that Podolski boasts no natural pace as such means it’s a lose-lose, which clearly means a superior needs to be signed this summer. Which brings us to our second candidate for the spot at the club, Santi Cazorla.
Cazorla started life brightly in England and had a stellar first season, scoring and assisting at will. His second season however has been far from impressive. Starting the season with injury it took Cazorla a good span to return to his best but despite a couple of performances here and there against Liverpool, Fulham and Sunderland he has struggled in general. With Ozil playing centrally, Cazorla has had lesser time on the ball and has been more of a sidekick in terms of playmaking and it is obvious to see how that has restricted his influence on the play. Arsenal are lucky to have numerous players who can create centrally but it is no rocket science that Ozil will be the primary conductor in the side come next season and that adds further weight to the argument of getting in a new left sided direct player who can be put in behind defences by the German. This will however change the entire dynamic of the Arsenal attack, which is right now based on a medium tempo, keeping the ball with a patient passing game, switching the ball from centre to either flank and expecting fullbacks to stretch the defence. With a new left sided attacker, Arsenal could play much more direct, building short crisp moves and utilizing the full width of the pitch rather than clustering in the centre.
All in all with Walcott and a new left winger who can do what Theo does on the right in a refined way and a new striker, the Arsenal attack for next season might be an entirely different cast. What that means for Podolski’s future is unknown but Cazorla would still feature regularly either off the bench or as an alternative in home games where greater possession would be the primary motive. Whether such a player is available in the market or not, however is for Arsene Wenger and his scouts to figure. Julian Draxler or Marco Reus wouldn’t be bad you know.
