Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claims the criticism ofAi??Mesut Ozil is “unfair” and insists the player should not be made a “scapegoat” for teamsai??i?? failure.
Arsenal were outplayed by German side Borussia Dortmund in their UEFA Champions League opener and Ozil was criticized for his lackluster performance against the Germans. But despite the criticism in the aftermath of the loss, the Arsenal boss insists the supporters should not be worried over Ozil’s form.
“Why should he be a scapegoat? For what? We lost one game since the beginning of April. But we want to respond after a disappointing performanceai???, Wenger said. He was speaking to The Daily Telegraph.
The Arsenal boss also urged the supporters to remain patient with Ozil and the player will be back at his best in some time.
“Fans need to be patient. You want your best players in every game but you have to be united and go through hard periods.
“Everybody judges players on one game but football is played with many ups and downsai???
Ozil moved to Arsenal from Real Madrid on the last day of 2013ai??i??s summer transfer window but the playmaker has failed to justify his hefty price tag till date. But Wenger has not lost the faith in the player yet.
Wenger said that Ozil need some more time to recover from the hangover of the World Cup.
“It’s a bit unfair because I believe the offensive talents on Tuesday night were not in best condition to express that talent. On the other hand it is post-World Cup and he came back on August 11 and it takes a few months to get back to your best.ai???
“Many of the World Cup stars don’t even play at the moment. It’s natural. I’ve seen it before. It is more mental than physical.ai???
The Arsenal boss also took the opportunity to reassure the fans about the quality of the squad and asked them to keep their faith in the team.
“They (the supporters) should not be concerned. We all go through periods where we are less good. We are a union, players, supporters and directors.ai??? Wenger concluded.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will be back in the Premier League on this weekend and they will be playing against Aston Villa on Saturday.
