Schalke. Oh Schalke! One moment they play like a perfect team with fluid transitions and attack, the other moment they seem to roll down and play dead. Over the course of the last week, we have seen them oscillate to both ends, displaying their wide spectrum of footballing abilities. But a close look tells us that it is a good sign rather than a bad one.
Schalkeai??i??s first point in the Champions League came against EPL leaders and ex-winners Chelsea, the first win of the Bundesliga came away at Bremen and they managed to rescue a point after being two down to Frankfurt. The ship finally seems to be steadying now.
After being handed a manageable Champions League group alongside Chelsea, Maribor and Sporting CP, a second place finish to qualify for the knockout stages seems very likely. The game last week against Chelsea seemed a one sided game on paper. Schalke had just managed a point until then and considering their injury crisis, resorted to playing two midfielders in their back line ai??i?? Marco Hoger and Roman Neustadter, normally central midfielders. The midfield pairing was Kevin Prince Boateng and Dennis Aogo, an attacking midfielder and a natural left back respectively. With even the first choice captain Benedikt Howedes and deputy Jefferson Farfan missing, it appeared certain that a drubbing was on the cards. Yet, somehow, capitalizing on poor Chelsea finishing, Kaan Ayhan and Roman Neustadter stood their ground to neutralize the threat of Dider Drogba, Hazard never seemed to finish after beating Hoger, Boateng seemed to do well defensively and the partnership of Max Meyer, Julian Draxler and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was in full swing.
Just as the 1-1 draw at London seemed to bring out the best in Draxler and co., Schalkeai??i??s game hit the other extreme. Possibly due to the midweek exertions, the Schalke defence was all over the place as they trailed 2-0 within 25 minutes. It took a Choupo-Moting penalty and a Draxler header to rescue a point in a game which saw 3 red cards, with Draxler and Boateng sent off for the Blues.
The wobbly start to the season suggests that despite all their quality, there is no strength in depth for the Blues. With Uchida, Howedes, Matip and Kolasinac all injured at the same time, the entire defence had to be reshuffled. Academy defender Marvin Friedrich was almost handed a start against Chelsea and Marco Hoger is evidently a midfielder struggling to adapt to the pace of wingers when he is played at right back. Yet, even after deciding on a defensive line led by Roman Neustadter, a stellar attacking performance was long overdue.
The Gelsenkirchen outfit also managed to deliver in Bremen on Tuesday. After a dull first half, great finishes by Meyer, Neustadter and Barnetta underlined the resurgence of the team. The comeback of Uchida into the starting eleven was celebrated with a great defensive performance by the team. Although, the old problem of the midfield not being authoritative enough still existed, the attack overshadowed it. Great runs by Meyer and Huntelaar troubled the Bremen defence constantly and the final result proved fair in light of their performance.
Despite all the quality, attacking problems still persist. When the talismanic Jefferson Farfan sustained a long term injury at the season start, Sidney Sam was expected to fill in the void, but the German international has never managed to adequately do so. His tendency to drift onto his left foot was easily read by the opposition time and again, and only his pace remained an asset. Huntelaar drops far too deep to try to create play, rather than wait for a cross in the box.
Schalkeai??i??s next game is the Rivierderby against Borussia Dortmund at home this weekend and the task of capitalising on their Ruhr rivalsai??i?? injury problems is still a difficult one, made all the more difficult by the absence of the suspended Julian Draxler. Irrespective of the result, this game will serve as the springboard to the rest of the season. The performances against Chelsea and Bremen prove that the team not only still has individual brilliance, but is also capable of stabilising themselves, no matter the team selection.
The person who benefitted the most from the previous week was manager Jens Keller, who will heave a big sigh of relief after various Schalke supporters were calling for his sacking. But the four points earned, by no means, guarantees his safety. Now that Joel Matip and Atsuto Uchida are back to full fitness, and Benni Howedes is nearing his return, consistent performances will need to be shown so that the team can reassert themselves as a top club not only in Germany, but also in Europe. Theyai??i??re beyond the stage for a hit-and-run point week in and week out.
Schalke fans still have a lot to look forward to this season, especially as more and more players return from injuries. But until then, the supreme quality of players like Julian Draxler and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar could sustain them.
