As hosts of the World Cup, Brazil are under immense pressure to win it and banish the demons of the Maracanazo. Brazil did prove that they had the mettle to lift the World Cup after being Spain 3-0 last year in Rio to win the Confederations Cup. The starting XI that started that day: Julio Cesar, Dani Alves, Thiago Silva (captain), David Luiz, Marcelo, Luiz Gustavo, Paulinho, Hulk, Oscar, Neymar, Fred is the same XI that started against Mexico in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2014 ai??i?? hinting at the continuity and familiarity that Luiz Filipe Scolari was trying to achieve.
How Brazil played in the Confederations Cup
In the FIFA Confederations Cup, Brazilai??i??s 4-2-3-1 consisted of Neymar and Hulk playing as inverted wingers while Marcelo and Dani Alves overlap them. Oscar and Fred in the middle played selfless roles in order to get the best of out of the wide men.
Neymar was the star man of the Confederations Cup. Marcelo frequently overlapped to confuse the fullbacks (whether they should follow Marcelo or track Neymar cutting in) and that allowed Neymar to cut in and enjoy a lot of space in the middle of the pitch. Neymar also stayed wide at times, most evident by his goal in the Confederations Cup final where he ran directly at the defence. On the other flank, Hulk played a similar role but was disappointing ai??i?? probably the worst Brazilian player of the Confederations Cup. The left-flank was undoubtedly much more productive than the right for Brazil.
However, a lot of the success was also down to Oscarai??i??s tactical intelligence. Oscar is not a stereotypical number ten by any stretch. He is capable of marking out the opposition midfielders (like he nullified Pirlo in his first start for Chelsea) while simultaneously provide an attacking threat. In Brazil, as Neymar and Hulk both cut in, Oscar goes wide. This keeps the width of the side and doesnai??i??t overcrowd the centre of the park while it helps in stopping counterattacks in case the move breaks down. In addition to Oscar, Paulinho displayed a tendency to dart forward and get into goalscoring positions and this resulted in his winning goal against Uruguay in the semifinal. Oscar dropped deep at times here so as not to leave a gaping hole in the middle of the park. Meanwhile, Gustavo dropped very deep for Brazil ai??i?? at times even as a third center back, like Busquets at Barcelona.
Up top, Fred was more of a target man who linked up play. He dropped deep at times to get opposition center backs out of position, while also acting as a focal point that Neymar and Oscar played off. His prior goal scoring record was poor and raised doubts, but he gave an answer to his critics via his 5 goals in the tournament.
It was expected that Brazil would play a similar way when they lined up against Croatia ai??i?? but it was anything but.
Brazil 3-1 Croatia
While the lineup was the same, Scolari rotated his attacking band. Hulk played on the left, Oscar on the right and Neymar played behind Fred. The reasoning was probably the positioning of Sime Vrsaljko, a rightback, playing left-back and the presence of Modric-Rakitic in the middle of the park.
Modric and Rakitic are two brilliant ball distributors (Modric is a regular for Real Madrid, while Rakitic just signed for Barcelona) who keep the ball well and pass it brilliantly. However, both of them are used to having a dedicated holding midfielder with them doing the dirty work and they arenai??i??t strong enough defensively themselves. Scolari realized this and played Neymar there, looking for him to find space in between the lines. This tactic didnai??i??t work when Croatia sat deep and minimized space in between the lines, but it worked to perfection for the goal ai??i?? where Oscar drew them up and slipped Neymar in.
The tactical ramification was to push Oscar wide. Oscar struggled there in the Rafa Benitez era for Chelsea and that was why Mourinho made him his number 10 and told Mata to adapt to life on the wing or be transferred out. However, the reason was that the inexperienced Sime Vrsaljko was a right back who was hesistant to go on his weaker left foot. He would have been pleased to follow Hulk cutting in as that shifts to his stronger right foot, but Oscar continually went past him on the flanks and delivered fantastic crosses. Oscar also drifted centrally a lot of times to devastating effect and he was the true man of the match. After Ramires and Bernard came in, Oscar took his favoured No 10 role and scored a goal which his performance deserved.
Hulk meanwhile was subdued on the left. Bereft of space to cut in, he took up a very high position on the left and looked for space in behind the defence but never got much. Bernard off the bench showed signs of promise but couldnai??i??t contribute alot while Ramires was a defensive substitution to hold onto the lead.
Brazil 0-0 Mexico
Brazil made one change, replacing Hulk with Ramires. Hulkai??i??s fitness concerns were mooted as the reason but it looked like a defensive change by Scolari ai??i?? he could have taken Bernard or Willian instead of Ramires here. Andres Guardado frequently shifts across to the left (he is a winger who starts on the left of a 5-3-2 central midfield) while Miguel Layun is the more dangerous of the two fullbacks. Scolari saw this and thus put Ramires there to stop Mexico from exploiting that flank (which Croatia did) and relying on the left flank/centre of the park for creativity and goals.
Ramires has been used as a defensive winger by Chelsea at times and he is Brazilai??i??s option here. He shut down Layun effectively but had no attacking threat. Ramires has had a dismal season for Chelsea this season and his poor form continued. At his best, heai??i??s an incredible defensive winger ai??i?? tracking his fullback then bombing past him on the break with his immense speed and stamina (showcased against Barcelona) ai??i?? but at his worst, his flaws become apparent – Appalling technical ability (very unlike a Brazilian), rash tackling and awful passing. The Mexican wingbacks didnai??i??t advance forward a lot in this game though, which rendered his role somewhat useless. His booking was also a reason he went off. He was withdrawn after 45 minutes for Bernard. Bernard played well, attacking his fullback and beating him but couldnai??i??t provide a telling contribution.
We expected Neymar to revert to the left and Oscar down the middle, but Scolari persisted with Neymar as a number ten and thrust Oscar to left flank. It didnai??i??t work out for both of them. Oscar barely got into the game (partly down to Marceloai??i??s poor performance) ai??i?? with an inability to beat his man and dictate the tempo of the game. His intelligent movement wasnai??i??t given a platform to showcase itself while he clearly showed that he is unsuited and wasted on the wings. Willian was noticeably better when he came on.
Neymar has a dedicated holder to beat this time, and found less joy as Mexico crowded the middle, with Vazquez not giving him space in between the lines. Neymar drifted towards the left side to find space and toiled hard, but couldnai??i??t find the telling contribution.
Brazil looked shorn of creativity down the middle (due to both Oscar on the wings and Paulinhoai??i??s poor performance) and attacked through the flanks and crossing the ball ai??i?? which played it into the hands of Mexico although they tested Ochoa a lot.
Brazil 4-1 Cameroon
Scolari finally reverted back to the expected lineup here. Hulk replaced Ramires and Oscar came back to the No 10 role. Neymar frequently cut in from the left while Oscar took his place on the left. This exchange happened so often that Neymar and Oscarai??i??s average position was nearly the same. Neymar popped in a central position for the first goal while he went on a trademark run for the second. Also to be noted was how Fred dropped deep to open up space for Neymar in the first goal, though the Cameroon defence left much to be desired.
Paulinho was perhaps fortunate to start in this game but did nothing on the pitch to prove Scolari he has it in him to fend off competition. A measly 18 touches, 10 passes and another anonymous showing led to Scolari finally losing patience with his number 8 and introducing Fernandinho at half-time, a move that no one argued against. Fernandinho showed in his 45 minute outing exactly what Brazil were missing. He took charge of the midfield, keeping the ball, passing it around and kept play ticking. He worked really well with Gustavo and made sure Brazil rarely looked like conceding. It was a very assured performance from the Manchester City man and he capped it off with a great goal, doing what Paulinho is best known for ai??i?? a box-to-box run. He has earned his place and should ideally start against Chile. His brilliance was visible and probably the first time since the Croatia game, Brazil looked like a Ai??force through the middle of the park.
Hulk stayed much wider compared to Neymar. He wasn’t involved a lot in the game and he didnai??i??t do much to answer questions of his presence in the side. Scolari also reaffirmed a substitution which we may see more of now, Hulk (or Bernard) substituted off for Ramires when Brazil is defending a lead. He took off Hulk when it was 3-1 and Ramires added a good defensive presence ai??i?? though Cameroon were exhausted as well and couldnai??i??t mount much of an attack. Bernard or Willian may well start now against Chile.
Fred had another normal showing. He was not spectacular but he was better than his previous showings in the competition, and he did well to drop deep and open space for midfield runners. His goal means that he should start the next game, and it could be the confidence boost that he needed.
Brazilai??i??s defence was uncertain again. They were terribly caught-out for the goal. Dani Alves has had a shocker defensively in the whole tournament and he was soundly beaten in the goal, which was awful from a Brazilian perspective. No-one tracked Matip or covered the backpost well. Cameroon were probably the worst team in the competition and if they found joy down the flanks, then itai??i??s not a secret that other teams can as well. Brazilai??i??s impervious defence of the Confederations Cup has been found wanting and they need to improve defensively quick as tougher opposition await them.
What holds for Brazil in the future?
The term ai???If it ainai??i??t broke, donai??i??t fix itai??? is the way to go for Brazil now. Oscar and Neymar are finally restored to their original positions and the results have been really good. While Oscar wasnai??i??t as great as he was against Croatia, he was brilliant off-the-ball against Cameroon ai??i?? his 5 tackles emphasizing that.
Fredai??i??s goal looks likely to keep him in the lineup, while Scolari should persist with the same defensive unit. There arenai??i??t much options available for Brazil. His insistence to leave Filipe Luis home means Marcelo has a locked place in Scolari’s lineup and the manager has to solve the defensive problems from the current unit itself. They are certainly capable defensively and will need to be at their best.
Paulinho doesnai??i??t look like recovering his place now ai??i?? unless Fernandinho or Gustavo have a suspension. Both were brilliant and deserve a run against Chile, whereas Paulinho has been abysmal off late. Even if one of Fernandinho or Luiz Gustavo is suspended, Brazil may well turn to Hernanes or Ramires in the middle over Paulinho. Paulinhoai??i??s current performances cannot work against Chileai??i??s pressing game.
On the right – Hulk has been disappointing and may well be dropped. Ramires has played himself out of contention for a starting spot as he is much handy off the bench to preserve a lead and be a counter attacking outlet. This leads to a straight fight between Willian and Bernard. Bernard is a small, quick winger who concentrates on beating his man and crossing it in. Willian is a player with immense technical ability, brilliant stamina and fantastic defensive workrate. His goals however are not enough for a winger though he still has been criminally under-utilized by Brazil and deserves more minutes. However, given recent selections, Bernard looks to be Brazilai??i??s go to man on the flank ai??i?? unless Hulk shows a dramatic recovery in form.
Brazil topping the group has setup a 2010 WC repeat against Group B runner-ups, Chile. Chile are a brilliant side in this World Cup. Their midfield is probably the best in pressing, led by Arturo Vidal while their inside forwards (Sanchez and Vargas start in extremely wide positions for a forward and cut in) can very easily exploit the space behind Dani Alves and Marcelo. They are a frantic side off the ball and actually pressed Spain into submission ai??i?? yes, they outpressed Spain. They have used a 3-4-1-2 in both their big games and look likely to keep that. Netherlands did well against them by playing defensively and looking for the counter. Brazil are a counter-attacking side and will look to follow the same example.
