UEFA Champions League Draw – Bayern Munich Takes On Juventus ; Barcelona Face PSG

The draw for the UEFA Champions League quarter-final stages was conducted today and we have got very interesting fixtures in our hands.

Arsenal’s defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich on away goal rules meant that England didnai??i??t have a representative in the Quarter-final draw that took place today. Three teams from La Liga and two teams from Bundesliga made up five of the last eight remaining teams in the competition ai??i?? which is perhaps a reflection of the dominance of the Spanish and German national team in Europe at the moment.

Former Real Madrid player Steve McManaman was the man who conducted the draw. The first leg of the four ties will be played on 2^nd and 3^rd April with the second leg in the following week on 9^th and 10^th of April. The first name to come out of the draw was that of Spanish club Malaga. Here is the look at the matches that will take place in the next round of the Champions League ai??i??

Malaga, Real Madrid, PSG and Bayern Munich will play the first leg of their tie at home. A glance at the fixtures and undoubtedly the match between Bayern Munich and Juventus stands out from the rest. Both these teams currently lead their respective domestic leagues and have big leads on their rivals. On paper Bayern Munich have a stronger squad, but considering Conteai??i??s tactical acumen and how shabby Bayern were in their second leg fixture against Arsenal, this will be a very close match.

PSGai??i??s fixture against Barcelona will see Zlatan Ibrahimovich go up against his old club and with a point to prove. But PSG will be without their talisman in the first leg due to the suspension he picked up during their match against Valencia in the previous round, but the striker will surely travel to Camp Nou in the second leg. It is also a match between a team who have dominated Europe in recent years and a team which has ambitions of doing so in future.

Real Madrid will host Galatasaray in theAi?? one of the other Quarter-finals. It will be a match that will see Jose Mourinho go up against three of his former players in, Hamit Altintop, Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder. The latter two were vital parts of the title winning squads under the Portuguese manager at Chelsea and Inter respectively. Madrid are out right favourites in this match, but Ali Sami Yen StadAi?? is one of the toughest places to visit in modern football, the hostile atmosphere in this place is perhaps more terrifyingAi?? than anywhere else in Europe, and Real Madrid will be playing the second leg away from home ai??i?? Welcome to hell (as they say in Turkey).

Among all the other teams Borussia Dortmund might have landed the most favourable draw. But as soon as the German club were drawn against Malaga, the contrasting fortunes of these two teams came to the forefront. On one hand Malaga have been banned from European competitions for next season as they have failed to pay the wages of their players and staff on time, which is considered as a breach in financial regulations set up by UEFA, on the other hand we have Dortmund who are considered the model club for FFP by most of the experts. On the field Dortmund might have a considerably stronger squad but Malaga have pulled off some big surprises this season already. None expected them to reach the Quarter-finals this season considering the turmoil that the club has faced in recent times and they might be able to ruffle a few German features ai??i?? but anything more than a convincing Dortmund win will be considered as a huge upset in this tie.

On paper, Dortmund, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are favourites to progress to the semi-final. But knockout football can never be predicted and that is what keeps the game alive. Interestingly the semi-final matches were not drawn in this round and will take place only after the Quarter-finals are complete; this is the first time they have split the two draws.
