The Champions League final might end up being an all-German affair but for one particular German club, every single game is now a cup final. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim are staring down the barrel at potential relegation from the Bundesliga after an otherwise comfortable five-year stay in Germanyai??i??s top flight. Theyai??i??re the league side ringing in the managerial changes this season but two sackings later, they still find themselves on the path to automatic relegation. While their latest case of hiring and firing has seen new manager Markus Gisdolai??i??s side collect four points from three games, the kind ofAi??form befitting FC Bayern MA?nchen is whatai??i??s required over the final four fixtures for the new man to steer the ship safely to the port.
Hoffenheimai??i??s problem this season is that they have never picked up steam. They have only collected back-to-back wins once this campaign and an undefeated streak hasnai??i??t surpassed three games. This brief glint of form is however something the side will be hoping to repeat in the coming weeks ai??i?? and surprisingly enough, it might just suffice. The long and short of it for TSG is that they will need to take seven points from a possible twelve. They already sit six behind DA?sseldorf and are three away from Augsburg, but a disastrous goal difference practically makes it seven and four respectively. NA?rnberg, Bremen and Hamburg are the sides to beat, with the final game away at Borussia Dortmund surely a write-off. Thereai??i??s no denying that wins against the first two are there for the taking. FCN have lost their last two matches, both painful derby-defeats, while Bremenai??i??s performances this season have been more than below par for a team of their standard, particularly last weekai??i??s 3-0 home defeat to fellow strugglers Wolfsburg.
The really tricky obstacle comes in the form of Hamburger SV. A team that are so hard to predict; one that beats defending league champions Dortmund 4-1 just two weeks before losing 5-1 to famously inconsistent Hannover. Though HSVai??i??s current form is on the up, an off-day for the Europa League chasing club could certainly see TSG pick up a point. Hoffenheim do seem to have rediscovered their desire to survive in recent weeks, something that looked lost under Gisdolai??i??s predecessor Marco Kurz. Itai??i??s no good for the players to keep saying they ai???want to give 110 percentai??? in the build-up to every match without actually delivering on the pitch, but the 122km covered by the Kraichgau side in their 2-2 with Wolfsburg two weeks ago ai??i?? the most of any side on matchday 29 ai??i?? shows that the new man at the helm has brought the hunger back to their relegation fight.
Of course, this is all hypothetical. In all honesty, Hoffenheim are still below two sides in the table that have been better than them this season and the chances of them crawling their way back above either of them are slim. Augsburg will not lose all four of their remaining matches and DA?sseldorf are just a little too far away from TSG for them to be a realistic target over such a short space of time. So what lies in store if relegation is unavoidable? Step one of the backup plan has already been completed and that was bringing in new manager Markus Gisdol. Hoffenheim insist he is in for the long run and will shape the ai???rebuilding of the clubai???. In that statement alone the higher-ups have acknowledged that the club ethics have been led somewhat astray in Sinsheim and they have lost sight of their own ideas.
TSG want to focus on youth development and playing ai???good, honest footballai??? to win the fans back. As a club that zoomed through the lower leagues after an influx of cash, it was easy for them to lose their emphasis on good, young players in their readiness to spend big money on names to help them be competitive. While that certainly helped them in the short term, their long-term investment has taken a blow. The determination has now returned, regardless of the division they will be playing in next season, to restore to their original values and the ones that German clubs are known for.
The Bundesliga seems to be producing all the young, European talent at the moment with Mario GAi??tze, Marco Reus, Lewis Holtby and Max Kruse all names that will surely be helping Germany towards major tournament wins over the next ten years. Borussia Dortmund, Borussia MAi??nchengladbach, Schalke 04 and SC Freiburg are the respective teams that have used their youth setup to good effect. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim want to belong to that category but relegation might be the only way to get them started. Their current youth crop contains the likes of Sebastian Rudy and Kevin Volland and though they are decent players, they wonai??i??t be world beaters. A stint in division two, regardless how long, should see Markus Gisdol capable of focussing on this important part of the squad and will also give him chance to integrate other youngsters into the team.
He, after all, has already worked with Holtby at Schalke and knows a talent when he sees one. However, should TSG avoid the drop, that plan might take the plunge as quickly as Eren Derdiyokai??i??s market value. The gift of another season of top-level football will no doubt see owner Dietmar Hopp reaching into his pockets again to ensure another season like this one doesnai??i??t reoccur. That wonai??i??t attribute much to Germanyai??i??s national team in five yearsai??i?? time, but that is exactly what TSG 1899 Hoffenheim are about.
