More often than not in the past, the transfer window has been a carousal of players coming in and out of White Hart Lane, with the club linked with a number of stars across the world in their bid to land domestic glory and secure a place in the Champions League. Be it in the summer or January, Tottenham Hotspur are mooted with a switch for the top performers across the globe, while seeing their prized assets courted by some of the games biggest clubs in the game.
This time around is a similar scenario for Spurs, who again find their name in the papers on a daily basis. Whether it is Gareth Bale linked with yet another big money switch to Real Madrid, or a number of players supposedly set to join the Andre Villas-Boas revolution, fans never have to look far if they want to see their team in the gossip columns. However, it is vital that the club strengthen before the close of the transfer window in two vital areas ai??i?? the midfield and on the front-line.
Focusing first on the middle of the park, Spurs were rocked by the news that Sandro will be forced out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. The Brazilian twisted awkwardly during the 0-0 draw with Queens Park Rangers earlier this month after attempting to play a ball over the top of the opposition backline and, as a result, required surgery bringing his impressive campaign to an early end.
While Scott Parker is available to step into his position, the England international doesn’t offer a similar threat to that off his Brazilian teammate, while his age ai??i?? 32 ai??i?? means he is more prone to tiredness than the midfielder nine years his junior. His performance during the 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday left a lot to be desired, although that is to be expected having made his first Premier League start in over eight months after suffering from an Achilles problem.
There are pockets of the Spurs fanbase that believe Parker is an adequate replacement for Sandro, but his differing threat and hesitancy to press higher up the pitch means Villas-Boas has lost a key cog of his midfield machine in his quest to secure a top four finish. Joao Moutinho of FC Porto is one player that is continuously mooted with a switch to north London, while Rennes youngster Yann M’Vila was a reported target for Spurs prior to his big money switch to Rubin Kazan. Either way you look at it, Spurs need to strengthen the midfield, with Jake Livermore and Tom Huddlestone the only two senior squad members in reserve should Parker and Moussa Dembele succumb to injury or suspension between now and the end of the season.
Focusing higher up the pitch, it is argued that the club still need to invest in a number 10 to play behind the striker. Gylfi Sigurddson and Clint Dempsey may’ve been snared to cover for the loss of Rafael van der Vaart, who left for Bundesliga side Hamburg on deadline day over the summer, but neither have yet to really grasp the concept of the position with both hands, although the latter appears to be acclimatising to his new found role more so than the former. If Holtby was to be brought in, performing behind the striker, it would bolster the creative ranks substantially. With Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon likely to be operating either side of him, the trio interlinking and creating space for one another would more often than not bring upon more goalscoring opportunities.
Pushing further up field, there is no other way to put it other than Spurs need a striker. Yes, Emmanuel Adebayor may’ve arrived permanently over the summer and Jermain Defoe is currently in the form of his life, but it’s not enough. With the former currently away on international duty with Togo for the African Cup of Nations, it leaves just the latter as the club’s out and out front-man. Since the departure of Dimitar Berbatov in 2008, the club have needed an out and out striker to bring others into play and one who knows where the back of the net is. Adebayor may’ve temporarily filled the void last season, netting 18 and assisting a further 12, but having arrived from Manchester City permanently, he’s looked a shadow of his former self and often churns out lackadaisical performances, be it through injury, a lack of confidence or a combination of the two. While there are those that believe Defoe is good enough to lead the front-line on his own ai??i?? his 14 goals in all competitions this season a testament to this ai??i?? he’s still a short-term solution to a permanent problem, no pun intended.
If Villas-Boas is to revert back to his 4-2-3-1 favoured formation, which he has been forced to do in the absence of Adebayor, then a burly target man is a necessity, or at least one who can play the lone role to full effect and has proven time and time again that he can operate to the desired effect.
The perfect striker for the job is Leandro Damiao. Spurs have been linked with a move for the Brazilian for the past five transfer windows, including this one, but have never been able to convince Internacional into selling. His scoring record for the Brazilian side is unrivalled by any striker on the planet, bar the untouchable quintet of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Edinson Cavani, Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie. Furthermore, the commercial link shared between Spurs and Inter would only increase the possibilities of landing Leandro, much like it had done with Sandro many a moon ago. The only real stumbling block appears to be his hesitancy to leave Brazil at this moment in time.
The striker himself, like compatriot Neymar, confirmed that he’d prefer to remain in his homeland until the culmination of the 2014 World Cup and one cannot blame him for doing so. With a move for him seemingly out of the question, reports suggest that Spurs are looking into the acquisition of either Gary Hooper or Wilfried Bony of Celtic and Vitesse Arnham respectively. While Spurs are currently riding high in fourth place, it’s evident that options need to be brought in.
