A number of young players stood out and got themselves counted this season, dazzling the continent with some outstanding performances. Here we consider only those players who were 21 or younger at the start of the season. It was not the easiest shortlist to make considering the varied degrees of excellent talent blossoming all across the continent, we have considered players who not only had brilliant individual seasons but also helped carry their sides on their own at times.

Isco ( Malaga )
Malaga played Champions League football for the first time in their history this season and reached the quarter finals. Being masterminded by their Chilean boss Pellegrini, it was Isco who stood up and caught the eye of the entire continent.
Breaking onto the scene last season with some terrific performances, Isco continued his impressive run of form this season as well. Single handedly carrying Malaga at times, the Spanish winger’s stock rose considerably after the second leg performance against Porto. Malaga dominated a hapless Porto side with Isco at the fulcrum of most moves garnered. One of the finest dribblers across the continent, his close control and sharp movement off the ball have been his biggest strengths and has many a European giant lining up in a queue for his signature. The fact that he stood up for the big games only points to an exceedingly mature footballer, who happens to be a keen learner. With Pellegrini heading to City, Isco is expected to be heading for greener pastures and we will surely see more of the talented youngster.
Julian Draxler ( Schalke 04 )
Schalke 04 lost Lewis Holtby in the winter transfer window and that brought the best out of the 19 year old as he drove the team as they recovered from their early season slump. Draxler pledged his loyalty for the Ruhrside club by signing a new contract, despite attracting interest from rivals Dortmund. His play-making abilities are there for all to see with the young German being a constant threat on the counter. His best performance of the season was the home game against Dortmund when he ran the show and capped his performance with a goal. He was equally impressive against Bremen, Gladbach among others in a very successful individually. A lot of clubs have been interested in signing the player, but it seems Draxler will stay in Schalke for now. However it would hardly be a surprise if he grows too big a fish for the Schalke pond.
Raphael Varane ( Real Madrid )
While most defenders peak and mature late in their 20’s Varane has shown exceptional composure and character for a teenager making his breakthrough at one of the biggest clubs in the world. His aerial supremacy and wonderful reading of the game has seen him ward off Portuguese centre back Pepe. Leading the side in interceptions, Varane has to hone his tackling skills. His best performance of the season came against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey when he almost shadowed Lionel Messi from start to finish and also added a cherry to the cake by scoring a goal. The French boy is surely not a finished product, but surely has a glorious career ahead of him.
Mario Goetze ( Borussia Dortmund )
Think of the best players across Europe this season and it will be difficult to look past the golden boy of German football. Taking Europe by storm, Goetze did what every Dortmund fan feared, by agreeing to join Bayern in the summer. That however can not diminish the fact that he is Europe’s hottest young star and will soon be playing for the European champions. But that’s for later.
This season, his statistics speak for themselves, with 12 goals and 14 assists in the Bundesliga and Champions League. His dynamism, intelligence and exceptional passing made him an asset for Dortmund and propelled them in their Champions League campaign. He almost had a statistically perfect game in the 6-1 mauling of Greuther Furth in the league but it was against Real Madrid that his true qualities and tactical intelligence surfaced on the world stage. Klopp employed Goetze in a central role but the German kept on drifting wide and that undid Real as nobody could mark the 20 year old. It’s fascinating that he will be playing under Pep Guardiola next season, one of the more tactically astute coaches of our times. Only time will tell whether he fulfills his potential under Pep or not, but the signs look ominous.
David Alaba ( Bayern Munich )
Alabaster when breaking through in the first team looked like one of those players whose versatility is their biggest enemy. But he has shed away any such fears and become of the most competent left backs across Europe at a young age of 20.
Selected in the Bundesliga team of the season, Alaba has made the left back spot his own with consistent performances week in week out for the ruthless machine that was the Bayern side this season. His combination with Ribery on the left worked delightfully as they tore apart defences at will. The Austrian’s defending is assured and composed, not flashy yet extremely confident. His best performance this season was the home leg against Juventus, where he hardly put a foot wrong. The highlight of his campaign however was against Schalke where he scored a brace in a 4-0 win. Best left back in the world? Arguably, and that speaks volumes about the youngster.
Special mentions for Romeu Lukaku (who was on loan at West Brom), Paul Pogba (who played a small yet significant part in Juve’s title win), Eric Lamela, Pedro Obiang, Matija Nastasic, Oscar, Daniel Carvajal and Marquinhos. These players made huge impacts at their respective clubs and had a strong shout for the young player of the season.
