There have been clamors about the football schedule becoming tight and unbecoming on footballers in recent times. With four to five tournaments in a season, coupled with international friendlies and club friendlies, many of the football players and clubs are finding it difficult to adjust to the rigours of the season calender. English football is no different. With the European Cups, the league and FA cup, many believe that the League Cup is a deterrent affecting the players and making life difficult for the players. Well, Swansea and Bradford are not part of the many.
Arsene Wenger once said famously, “For me, there are five trophies. The first is to win the Premier League, the second is to win the Champions League, third is to qualify for the Champions League, fourth is the FA Cup and the fifth the League Cup.” Probably this is true in case of other managers as well. But, the league cup this year has thrown up more exciting matches, unexpected results and a great reminder that football is not only about the big teams and players but also a way to fulfill long-standing dreams and bringing joy to a particular club’s supporters.
To put things in perspective, this year’s Capital One Cup or League Cup, whichever you can identify with, will be played between a fourth division team, which beat three Premier League teams en route to the final and a club which a decade ago was in the fourth division facing extinction and which has not won a major trophy in its 100 years of existence.
Bradford and Swansea are the teams for which this year’s League Cup is not just a final. It is a dream which was once impossible to achieve. Even Michael Laudrup, a Champions’ League winner and one of the greatest players ever, sounded upbeat. “We are talking history here,” said the great Dane about the final. The troubles Swansea have faced to rise from the fourth division to the first have been documented last year with great vigour but this year’s achievement of making it to the League Cup final is probably their finest moment. And the manner of it has been nothing short of heroic.
Swansea’s victory at Anfield against Liverpool was one of their best performances all season as Laudrup’s men dominated the Reds at their own stadium. And then they devoured Chelsea in a pulsating clash in which Rafael Benitez’s men were left kicking ball-boys in frustation. Their victories have been pleasing to the eye with great footballing skill and tactical nous instead of luck and physical dominance.
And then there is the lure of the Europa League, a competition which will allow Swansea to expand themselves and aim higher. A competition which can attract bigger names more easily helping the club and the financial rewards are also appealing. Liberty Stadium will have the chance to experience the magic of European nights, a thought which was considered sacrilege ten years ago.
As Swansea focus on their achievements, they also are having to deal with rumors of Michael Laudrup being linked to the biggest club of them all: Real Madrid. If Swansea win the cup and Laudrup decides to leave, it will be after seeing through one of the most remarkable seasons in Swansea’s history.
Bradford, on the other hand, whose budget is negligible compared to any of the Premier League teams they have beaten so far have a far impressive tale to boast of. But, it comes no surprise when Bradford openly admit that they aim to follow in Swansea’s footsteps to achieve promotion to the first division. From a top division team in 2001, and after two periods of administration, Bradford’s owners, Julian Rhodes and Mark Lawn, are confident of emulating Huw Jenkins and the A?2.3m they are set to gain because of this cup final run is more than enough to sustain the club in the near future.
The odds are stacked against Bradford but it always been the case this year. Against Arsenal and Wigan, two clubs famous for their impressive style of football, Bradford showed such character that Phil Parkinson, the manager claimed that he could see Roberto Martinez shocked by the intensity of their support and play. Beating Wigan at the DW Stadium on penalties proved be just the beginning of their fairytale. Next Arsenal were the victims of another penalty shootout as Thomas Vermaelen struck the post and Valley Parade was sent into delirious raptures as the Bantams celebrated their biggest scalp in more than a decade.
As the semi-finals started, everybody expected the Bantams luck to end with two legs against another Premier League opponent, Aston Villa. Bradford took the lead at home and held onto it at Villa Park to assure themselves of a place at Wembley.
Swansea are a side identical to Arsenal and Wigan and play well with the ball. Bradford certainly cannot beat them at their own game and will certainly be on the defensive the entire game but will try to use their physicality on set-pieces to score goals. Laudrup has already warned of any complacency and has admitted that his team will be favorites at Wembley. “We have to accept that we are favourites, but I think all my players they know that this is a unique situation for us, but even more for Bradford,” said the Dane.
In the last couple of years, we have quite a few romantic stories in the world of football. APOEL FC’s run in the UEFA Champions League culminating in a historic encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu and Mirandes’ miraculous run to the semi-final of the Copa Del Rey are a few bright examples. This time, the League Cup has not thrown one romantic story but two.
The League Cup as a tournament has not disappointed either. For the so-called bigger teams, it may be a tournament to try out their squad members and a last resort to win a trophy but for the smaller teams, it is a golden opportunity to highlight themselves in this hard world of modern football.
Even with the level of competition, the quality of football, the goals and the entertainment has been much higher than expected. Aston Villa’s victory against City, Chelsea’s victory against Manchester United and Arsenal’s thrilling comeback against Reading are some of the memorable games in a tournament in which many games have been decided by extra time and penalties offering various supporters the much revered thrills of knockout competitions.
As Wembley gears up for the League Cup final, Bradford and Swansea supporters will embark on one of their most memorable journeys in their footballing history. It is not just a final to determine a winner. Its an ode to the twists and turns the beautiful game has to offer. In this age of financial mismanagement and overly priced players, two of the smallest clubs in English football history will attempt to leave their imprints at the most historic venue in English football.
Michael Laudrup, one of the most eloquent managers in the game could not have previewed the clash any better. “It’s not the underdog against one of the big teams, it’s the under-under-underdog versus the underdog,” he said.
