Stuttgart advance to the their sixth DFB-Pokal final after a tough 2-1 victory over Freiburg. The Swabians have secured Europan football for themselves next season, and will face Bayern Munich in the final.
Both coaches predicted correctly before the match that it would be a very tough and open tie. Freiburg had the advantage of two more days of rest ahead of the game, but both teams showed that they were fully fit and motivated to win this game and reach the final in Berlin.
Bayern Munich had already advanced into the final yesterday, which meant that the winner of the second semi-final would have a secured spot for next seasonai??i??s Europa League. Especially for Stuttgart, who are only 12th in the league, it was perhaps their only chance for international football.
Freiburg are known for a very versatile approach away from home. Sometimes they stand quite deep in their own half, sometimes they are very fast and aggressive. This time they started a bit too hesitantly and were overwhelmed by Stuttgartai??i??s attacks. After three minutes, Martin Harnik could have taken the lead for Stuttgart when he went into the box and hit wide after a fine combination play on the right side. A minute later it was again Harnik who was free in front of the keeper after a fine long ball from Molinaro, but the Austrian winger could not get the ball into the net.
The Swabians were dominant during the first minutes and took the lead in the 9th minute. A fine tackle from Ibisevic won the ball back in midfield. TraorAi?? ran down the left wing and saw Boka in the middle, who easily slotted it home.
It was a great start for Stuttgart which motivated their supporters to sing even louder. But four minutes later, Rosenthal silenced the fans when he got a pass from Ginter and sprinted past Boka to equalize. Freiburg got into the game and even dominated most parts of the first half. Almost every attack came over their left side where Caligiuri played cat-and-mouse with Stuttgartai??i??s left back Gotoku Sakai. The Japanese defender struggled quite often, but Freiburg could not take any advantage of it. In the 29th minute it was Harnik who made up for his earlier missed chances when he headed in a Gentner cross against the run of Freiburgai??i??s superior play.
The game was taken intensely by both teams. Many fouls disrupted the game in the following time and kept the referee busy, although it was not an unfair game at all. After the break Stuttgart had two good chances to decide the game early (RA?diger 48ai??i??, Gentner 50ai??i??). But Ginter showed that Freiburg were still there, when in the 52nd minute he found himself free on target, but headed just wide.
Ibisevic had the best chance to score a minute later when a deflected ball from Sorg landed right at his feet and allowed him to sprint into the box where he got past Baumann. It was Krmas who saved the ball from the goal line. The Bosnian striker had scored in all previous DFB-Pokal matches this season, but today it wasnai??i??t to be.
Again as in the first half there were numerous little fouls on both sides which destroyed the flow of the match. Around the 70th minute Freiburgai??i??s coach Christian Streich demanded his players to push forward, and minutes later Kruse almost equalized again. TraorAi?? lost the ball during a counter attack to Schuster, who quickly passed the ball to Kruse. The future Gladbach player hit the ball on target, got a deflection off RA?diger, but Stuttgartai??i??s Sven Ulreich defused the situation with a fine save.
Freiburg were dominating the final stage of the game but Stuttgart defended quite well. In the 74th minute Freiburgai??i??s players claimed a penalty, but the referee played on and was right to do so. There was little contact, and not enough for a penalty call. It seemed as if Stuttgart were a bit tired towards the end, but they held on against Freiburgai??i??s attacks and especially during injury time were clever to hold the ball in their own lines until the referee blew the final whistle.
The Swabians had done it and reached their sixth DFB-Pokal final. On a positive note, apart from the financial benefits, Stuttgart have also secured themselves a spot in the third qualification round of the Europa League for next season ai??i?? and of course, they will battle for the DFB-Pokal against Bayern Munich on June 1st at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
