SSC Napoli hasAi??went thoughAi??quite an upheaval this summer. Topscorer Edinson Cavani has left the club along with experienced goalkeeper Morgan Di Sanctis, and in came players like Gonzalo Higuain, JosAi?? Callejon, and Dries Mertens. The biggest shift, however, was on the bench where Rafa Benitez took over the reins from Walter Mazzarri. And with him the Spaniard has brought a change in system.
A change of culture
Since the arrival of Edy Reja as coach back during the winter 2005 when SSC Napoli was called Napoli Soccer and played in Serie C, the system has been variations of a 3-5-2. Reja’s successors Donadoni and Mazzarri didn’t change the system. Especially the latter loved it, and has now introduced it at Inter.
This continuity meant that players were bought with this system in mind, and that players that didn’t really fit had to leave. Under Mazzarri extra focus was placed on the counter attack, which made Napoli famous beyond the borders of Italy. Attacking players like Lavezzi and Cavani would both work hard in order to press the opponent defenders to make mistakes, and then would be ready to storm to the front for the balls delivered to them by the likes of Hamsik, Zuniga, and Maggio. With the arrival of Benitez and the departure of Lavezzi and Cavani this specific kind of attack is a thing of the past.
More Possession
During the reign of Mazzarri and Reja Napoli would often win games while having less possession than the opposing team. There are already signs that this will rarely happen with Benitez at the helm. His method is not to stand back and take the chance on a quick counter. He wants his team to control possession while looking for chances to unlock the opponents’ defence. New wingers Callejon and Mertens offer width to that system while Insigne and especially Pandev, give the coach plenty of possibilities to shuffle around just behind and to either side of new striker Gonzalo Higuain. Pandev is not a natural winger, but during the time under JosAi?? Mourinho at Inter, he showed that he’s shrewd at fitting into any role given to him by the coach. His versatility can prove to be a big asset in Benitezai??i??s system.
First few games of the season have shown that the players are up for the change and ready to take control of a match. It has been against mediocre opposition, but the seven goals against Bologna and Chievo, followed by another dominant showing against Atalanta show that the players haven’t had problems breaking down defences. With a proven quality striker as Higuain in front of the ever improving Hamsik, it’s hard not to be optimistic about Napoli’s chances this season. That Napoli’s own defence is still a liability is another matter that will be interesting to follow during the coming months
From a back-three to a back-four
One of the main concerns before the season was that Benitez chose to change the back line from a system with three central defenders with wing backs on the side into a classic line of four with two center-backs and two full-backs. Due to the years with the 3-5-2 system Napoli simply didn’t have any full-backs. Or at least not any players who normally played as a full-back.
Because of the changes in defence there were persistent rumours that the wing-backs Maggio and Zuniga would leave the club – notably the latter who was flirting wildly with Juventus. Instead of going through the work of replacing them with good full-backs, who can be hard to find, Benitez went with the easy solution and simply asked both players to go from being wing backs to full-backs.
Neither Maggio nor Zuniga are totally new to the role as full-back. Maggio played it in Sampdoria some years back and has done it with Prandelliai??i??s Italy while Zuniga is a full-back in the national team of Colombia. Still they are players who are attack minded, and when Maggio has been a full back for La Nazionale he has had severe problems. Will they be able to learn the proper positioning in time for Napoli’s huge games against Dortmund, Arsenal, and Marseille in Champions League and Juventus, Milan, Inter, Roma, and Fiorentina in Serie A? Only time will tell.
Ideas at the front, concentration in the back
As several of the other Italian top teams Napoli is in a position where the defence looks like the weakest link. It will take time for the new full-backs to get 100% comfortable with their positions, and the center backs are not at the highest quality. Against Chievo it was first Britos who was found asleep instead of watching Paloschi. After that it was Maggio who wasn’t able to tackle the Chievo striker properly before his shot went through the legs of Pepe Reina, who has looked slightly suspicious despite the less than average difficulty of the first few games.
Napoli have one of the best attacking line-ups in Italy, and both full-backs will go forward more often than not, but the defence needs focus. Captain Paolo Cannavaro has been sidelined by the new coach, and the fourth choice defender Federico Fernandez was hugely out of favor with the former boss. It will be interesting to see how Benitez handles injuries and lackluster performances in the back line. The players need time to get into the 4-2-3-1 but they don’t have all the time in the world. After this weekend’s home game against Atalanta the opponents are Dortmund and AC Milan, two sides who boast of extraordinary offensive talent.
