Schalke 04 ai??i?? Have The Royal Blues Done Enough To Bury Last Seasonai??i??s Ghosts?

After an impressive start to the 2012-2013 season that saw them challenging for the top spot, Schalke ran out of steam midway through the campaign, resulting in them slipping down the table and eventually finishing 4th. Much of this was due to lack of squad depth in certain areas that the Royal Blues failed to address when they were hit with injuries, a tight schedule and loss in form. The summer has seen the Ruhr club busy adding to their squad, but will it be enough to sustain them on three fronts?

It’s never easy for fans of a side to stand back and see a rival winning lauds and cups while your team struggles to mount any serious trophy challenge. This has been the case with the blue side of the Ruhr valley for the past 2-3 seasons as their nearest and most hated rival Borussia Dortmund waltzed to two league championships and a DFB Pokal over the last three seasons. Even though they failed to win anything last season, Kloppai??i??s men in Yellow and Black won plenty of hearts with their flair and style.

Despite their DFB Pokal successes in recent past, Schalke are yet to win a Bundesliga title, their last league championship coming in the 1957-1958 season. They were champions for a minute though in the 2001 season before it would seem Bayern stole it from them in the next moment. After some inconsistent performances over the last few seasons, the Royal Blues finally looked to have fixed things under the steady guidance of Hubb Stevens last season. Six wins in their first nine games gave Schalke their best start in four decades and they matched the domestic success with some impressive showings in Europe and the DFB Pokal. It did very much look like they had found the formula to sustain the momentum for a whole season and mount a serious title challenge.

But then things started going downhill for them. The pressure of consistently performing on three fronts was taking its toll on the team. A lack of quality on the bench, injuries, off-field issues and a general drop in commitment led to Schalke sitting down for Christmas dinner with quite a sour face. Hubb Stevens took the bullet and was replaced by Jens Keller who too struggled to steer a ship that had suddenly gone astray. The sale of creat0r-in-chief Lewis Holtby to Tottenham and injuries to loanee Ibrahim Afellay, key defender Kryiakos Papadopoulos and their frontman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar didnai??i??t help much either. The players of the bench didnai??i??t quite inspire the same confidence and the style of play that Schalke had shown at the beginning of the campaign. Julian Draxlerai??i??s coming of age late into the season managed to salvage a Champions League spot for the Ruhr club in what can be termed as a disastrous campaign after a very promising start.

This summer has started quite brightly for Keller and his team with some new faces coming in to strengthen the side. With Schalke fighting it out on three fronts once again, this was much needed move to avoid last seasonai??i??s calamities. But have they done enough?

New Arrivals

Adam Salzai ai??i?? One of the departments where Schalke struggled the most last season was that of the goal scoring one. Klaas-Jan ai???Hunterai??? Huntelaar has been a key figure for the Royal Blues scoring 30+ goals for two seasons running. The departure of Raul left Huntelaar shouldering the goal scoring department on his own, a burden that became too big due to a dip in his form and then injury. His replacements Teemu Pukki and Ciprian Marica were unable to find the back of the net or bring their colleagues into the game that often. Pukki, inspite of giving everything on the pitch, failed to convert his commitment into goals. The lack of goals led to Schalke falling down from the table and were shown the exit from the Champions League by Turkish side Galatasaray.

The purchase of Hungarian International Adam Szalai should bring the Royal Blues the much needed threat up front and will also give them an alternate option to Huntelaar. Salzai impressed the Bundesliga last season with his goal poaching abilities with Mainz 05 scoring 17 goals in 33 appearances and earning 3 assists. More importantly he averaged a 66% pass accuracy creating 22 chances for his teammates with his passing ability. Also known for his aerial strength and agility, the Hungarian should provide the attack an alternative Schalke so missed last season.

Felipe Santana ai??i?? The Brazilian made the bold move of crossing the border over to the blue side having spent his last 5 years with Borussia Dortmund. A right footed center back, Santana spent much of his time playing second fiddle to Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels. Injuries to the above mentioned duo gave him 30 appearances for Kloppai??i??s side and many Dortmund fans will fondly remember his last minute goal against Malaga that took them through to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Schalke were left to rue their defensive fragilities as they conceded 50 goals in the league and the very same was responsible for their disastrous showings against Galatasaray. In Santana, Keller has a center back who is strong in the air, quick with his feet and has the experience in playing out a campaign in the Champions League. In 2012-2013 season, Santana won 69% of his duels with 80% of them being aerial battles. With 83% accuracy in passing the ball, the tall center back was also crucial in building attacks from the back. Last season, injury to Papadopoulos had Schalke in a soup having only HAi??wedes and Matip has center backs. Santana’s inclusion will not just give Schalke a back-up option, he could also be crucial in forming a center back partnership with Papadopoulos thus freeing Joel Matip to move up to a defensive midfield position.

Christian Clemens and Leon Goretzka ai??i?? Sticking to their policy of grooming youngsters, the Royal Blues have also acquired the services of youngster Clemens and Goretzka from Cologne and Bochum respectively. Armed with lightening speed and dribbling abilities, the young duo will be able substitutes/replacements for the wingers Farfan and Bastos.

Holes to be filled

The central midfield plays a crucial role in bridging the defense to the attack and this was again something Schalke struggled to cope with. New signings Roman NeustAi??dter and Tranquillo Barnetta failed to live up to their expectations while the side generally struggled when American international midfielder Jermaine Jones was absent. Young Marco HAi??ger and NeustAi??dter notched up 25+ appearances in the middle of the pitch but both won only 55-56% for their duals.

Jones on the other hand, despite making very few appearances due to injury and suspensions, won 62% of his duels and had 78% accuracy in passing the ball around. Moreover both HAi??ger and NeustAi??dter made fewer contributions to attack build-ups, thus increasing the burden on attacking midfielders Holtby and then Draxler in creating chances for the side’s forward and wingers. Their lack of experience in effectively shielding the back four was also exposed in their European adventures.

The signing of a midfield enforcer will take Schalke a long way in solving their creative and ball winning issues. HAi??ger and NeustAi??dter are still young, and an experienced campaigner other than Jones will go a long way in helping and moulding Schalkeai??i??s midfield.

Overall, the Schalke board and Jens Keller have gone to good lengths in bringing in signings that will strengthen the roster by a considerable margin. Like Bayern and Dortmund last season who brought in Dante, Mandzukic and Reus respectively, all of whom had had considerable exposure in the Bundesliga, the Royal Blues too have reached out from within their domestic league to upgrade their squad. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had the best seasons of his career (2010-2011 and 2011-2012) while playing alongside a fellow striker (Raul).

Szalai should be able to provide him a similar support up front. The loss of Holtby last summer seemed big at the time, but the emergence of Julian Draxler who has filled in the role remarkably well will give Schalke a definite hope in fending off competition in the three trophies. The inclusion of Santana should definitely add steel to a defense that was quite fragile last season.

Last season, a mix of lack of quality squad depth, injuries and exhaustion formed Schalkeai??i??s Achilles Heel which they struggled to counter with the roster they had. Their new signings, barring a quality midfielder, should be good enough to address these issues and Die Knappenai??i??s fans will be hoping they will have something to show to the yellow side of the Ruhr valley.
