Brought in as a long-term replacement for Alonso, can Illarramendi live up to the expectations? TheHardTackle takes a look at how the Spaniard fits into this Real Madrid team.
When Florentino Perez regained his position as Real Madrid president in 2009, he continued with the most famous Galacticos policy of the club. He made a statement in the same transfer window with the high profile signings of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo. The same transfer window saw other high profile signings as well, and amongst the most successful ones was the signing of Xabi Alonso from Liverpool. The deep lying playmaker was brought into the club for a hefty A?30 million. Since then, Alonso has become a regular starter and a prominent part of the club.
The Spaniard will turn 32 in the month of November. As age plays catch up with Alonso, the former Liverpool man has slowed down and at times struggled with fitness issues. He started his first game for Real Madrid this season against only this weekend. The Basque midfielder spent a reasonable time to recover from a pre-season injury. As Alonso gets older, his fitness issues will get more serious and the holding midfielder will require more rest. In 2013, Los Blancos signed Asier Illarramendi for a staggering ai??i??32m. Real Madrid had to cough up the amount in order to activate the playerai??i??s release clause.
Illarramendi and Alonso both started their careers with Real Sociedad. While Alonso helped Sociedad to finish second in the 2002-03 season, Illarramendi started in 32 games for Sociedad and helped them finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League after a long gap of 10 years. The midfielder had a great season for Sociedad, though he did not score any goals he was the main playmaker in the midfield. The deep-lying playmaker linked up plays and distributed the ball perfectly to his teammates. As a defensive midfielder, he is apt in breaking up the opposition attacks; he is also a quality passer and has shown his ability in lobbing the ball over the defences. He is equally potent in setting up attacks from the back for the forwards. All these qualities have often led to comparisons between the two players.
When Illarramendi was signed on by Real Madrid the midfielder expressed his delight to play alongside Alonso. He was quoted as saying,
ai???Xabi is a great player, which he’s shown throughout his career. He will be a very important team-mate for me, and I’m looking forward to training and playing with him. I will try to learn as much as I can from him.ai???
The 23-year old debuted in 2011 against Villarreal. Since then, he has gone on to make 51 appearances in all competitions for Real Sociedad and became a regular starter for the club. He also played a prominent role in helping Spain win the 2013 u21 European championship. He has incredible ability to hold down the attack and create chances as well. But despite his abilities, the Spaniard certainly lacks discipline. Illarramendi picked up 11 yellow cards in the 32 games he played for Sociedad last season, and he also managed 2 yellow cards in the 5 appearances he made for Spain in the u21 European championship. A trait quite similar to Alonso, who managed to pick up 16 yellow cards in 46 appearances for Real Madrid last season.
Illarramendi attracted a lot of attention with his stellar performances at the club and international level as well. Real Madrid did not hesitate in releasing the buy-out clause of the Sociedad youth product. He has been brought in to eventually replace Xabi Alonso as a deep lying playmaker. Though brought in as Alonsoai??i??s understudy the youngster hasnai??i??t had a chance to feature alongside the Basque midfielder. Alonso has been missing all the action due to a serious injury. As Alonso is now declared fit to start, we can expect Illarramendi to learn a lot from him on the pitch and in the training as well. Illarramendi was particularly delighted with Alonso’s return to full fitness as he stated: ai???[Xabi Alonso] is important for us; he has been here for a long time and has always been important.ai???
Amongst the 2013 summer recruits, Illarramendi enjoyed a particularly slow start to the season. Many thought that the holding midfielder was having a particularly tough time settling in the Spanish capital and he was finding it difficult to adjust to the environment. The midfielder was not shy in admitting that the move to Bernabeu was a tremendous change for him, but also expressed that he is ready to face the challenge.
“I’m from a village with a population of 5,000 inhabitants so moving to the capital won’t be easy,” he said. “It will be a huge change but I’m not afraid, you have to make big changes in life and this is a very attractive challenge.”
Despite a low-profile start to the season, Illarra has managed to win Carlo Ancelottiai??i??s confidence. The Italian believes in the midfielder and he proved it when Illarra started in the local Madrid derby against Atletico. Though his performance was not up to the mark and he was subbed off at half time for Modric, the game may have helped in increasing the confidence level of the midfielder. Ancelotti also showed that he believes in Illarra when he brought him on for Sergio Ramos in the 2-1 El Classico loss against Barcelona. The Real Madrid boss was particularly pleased with the Spaniardai??i??s performance despite the loss.
“Illarra played very well against Barcelona because he recovered many balls and made some good passes,” Ancelotti told reporters at a press conference.
Ancelotti also preferred to start Illarramendi alongside Khedira in the whopping 7-3 victory against Sevilla at home last weekend.
As every player in the Real Madrid team has now attained full fitness, it will get tougher and tougher for Illarra to grab a starting place. The Spaniard will have to compete with Khedira, Alonso, Modric and Casemiro for a spot in the starting eleven. The 23-year old knows this and is ready to grab the opportunity to improve his game and make his way into the first team. He stated:
ai???There will be more competition and that is good for the team and helps us all to improve. We have a match every three days and we will have to rotate to get rest. The important thing is we carry on as we are.ai???
With time, Illarra has managed to settle down well at the capital club. The midfielder must prove himself on the field in order to please the fans and justify the confidence invested in him by the club. The 23-year old has age on his side and may prove to be an important asset for the team in the near future.
