The city of Naples is infamous for its lackluster system of garbage collection. If the street sweepers in the big southern city have been a little distracted in their work during the month of January however it’s easy to forgive them. It must be hard bending down to collect the litter when you’re running around with your hands in the sky in celebration. Not only have the light blue forces of SSC Napoli collected 10 out of 12 possible points since new yearai??i??s eve, they have also been strengthened with players who have just the right characteristics to mend the most apparent weaknesses in the squad.
The month started off with a 4-1 thrashing of Zdenek Zeman’s Roma at home at the San Paolo. Megastar Edinsonai???El Matadorai??? Cavani bagged three goals before right wing-back Christian Maggio rounded off the score-line. Scoring four goals against a defensively suspect Roma team isn’t necessarily something out of the ordinary, but keeping their potent attack at bay was highly creditable. Armero: Welcoming the future

Both Aronica and Dossena were fielded by Palermo boss Giampiero Gasperini as the pink team went to Naples to play the second round of 2013. In front of their former home crowd they lost 0-3 in what must have been a strange experience for them. Napoli utterly dominated in a display where starlet Lorenzo Insigne was joined on the pitch by his younger brother Roberto. Past and future met as Napoli moved within just five points of leaders Juventus. Later that week that gap was made even smaller as Napoli won the appeal and had their two point penalty for not reporting an attempt of match fixing revoked. The new verdict also brought captain Paolo Cannavaro back into the team, which conveniently solved a potentially problematic lack of depth in defence. The victory in this off-field battle was another major shot in the arm for the Azzuri as it eased the pressure on rest of the squad.
Another sign of steady progress came from Deloitteai??i??s Football Money League report which was published few days back. Owing to their champions league campaign last season Napoli moved to an impressive 15th position among top European clubs outgunning the likes of Roma and Newcastle United by raking up close to 150 million Euros in revenues.

The transfer market also saw Napoli invest in a long awaited back-up for Edinson Cavani. The quick but inconsistent Eduardo Vargas was send back to South America in something that seems more like an adieu than au rAi??voir ai??i?? maybe even followed by a good riddance. The Chilean never really settled and failed to deliver as he saw Insigne take the spot as replacement of Ezequiel Lavezzi, who left for PSG in the summer. To replace Vargas Napoli chose to bring in Emanuele CalaiA? from Siena.
CalaiA? returns to the club he helped bringing back to the top flight a handful of years ago. The 31 year old had some of his best times in Napoli between 2004 and 2008. 
Yes ai??i?? the jinn is out of the bottle. And it cannot be ignored. After the two difficult away games against Fiorentina and Parma Napoli is still just three small points behind Scudetto favourites Juventus. The league title has never been the goal and just the talk about it smells horribly of hubris, but the fact is that Napoli is in fantastic shape at the moment and that the rivals are losing points left and right. Napoli have 15 more points now than at the same stage last season, and with Cavani scoring for fun, Hamsik in top form, and a deeper squad, they are easily the biggest rivals for Juventus. Should Juventus win the title after all, the Napoli fans should not be disappointed, but as things are now they should they let this chance to dream escape them.
Napoli further bolstered their squad in January by signing experienced Porto defender RolandoAi??and young Croatian midfielder Josip Radosevic, both on loan.Ai??
As January draws to and end things are better in Naples than most people thought when they lost to Bologna, twice, in December. If they can keep on going like this, which is doubtful to be fair, then a league title is not out of reach. The real goal however should still be to qualify for Champions League and make sure to continue in the path of progress that has brought them well into Europe’s top 20. Then Lo Scudetto might come. Just now it is nothing but a dream. One of the most beautiful ones for Napoli fans.
