Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson have employed various tactics to solve their central midfield issues. Here is a look at how new-man David Moyes could come up with a solution from within his own squad.
Given that a large number of fans werenai??i??t even born when Sir Alex Ferguson was appointed manager, it is a strange time to be a supporter of Manchester United. While he has certainly left the club in a condition that is not good enough to go too long without a trophy, he has left behind two lingering issues that are now part of David Moyesai??i?? pre-season dossier. For one, reams of newsprint have been dedicated towards speculation of Wayne Rooneyai??i??s future at the club. However, the only reason Rooney has dominated headlines a la Suarez is due to the issues surrounding Manchester Unitedai??i??s lightweight midfield that began to crop up even before the complications surrounding the Merseysiderai??i??s contract situation.
Roy Keane, and Fergie’s tactics
Opinions may differ on the man since 2005, but part of Sir Alexai??i??s sustained success at Old Trafford can be attributed to the dominating presence of Roy Keane in midfield. The Irishman was one player in red capable of taking the game by the scruff of the neck, so to speak. He was strong in the tackle and capable of using his strength to keep opposing players off the ball. His role, though, was not limited to shielding the back four; he was among that breed of box-to-box midfielders that thrived in the Premier League in the 90s and early in the new millennium. A total of 50 goals in 12 years at Manchester United was ample proof of his ability to contribute from an attacking perspective as well.
Attempting to replace him will be futile, but ever since Keano left the club in 2005, Manchester United havenai??i??t succeeded in (fully) replacing his contribution to the team. Since then, Owen Hargreaves did join the Red Devils from Bayern Munich and performed well his role of shielding the back four and allowing the likes of Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick to create goal-scoring opportunities for Rooney, Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez to exploit further up the pitch between 2007-09. However, horrible luck with fitness and injury problems saw him player fewer minutes thereafter. Anderson, on the other hand, has exhibited the tendency to delight and frustrate them in equal measure.
Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson set up his teams in recent years with the motive of ai???going aroundai??i?? teams rather than ai???going throughai??i?? them. It may come as a surprise to those who havenai??i??t observed it, but Ferguson sent out 4-4-2 formations on a fairly regular basis. The growing prominence of Cristiano Ronaldo meant that emphasis was placed on making full use of the flanks. As long as Owen Hargreaves was fit and firing, this meant that the Red Devils were secure in the centre of the pitch, with a handy back four. The system has continued to work even after Ronaldo left the club, as conventional wingers were brought in to for the system in place. While the Red Devils (almost) always score points against mid-table and those in the drop zone, the absence of a midfielder in the mould of Roy Keane has resulted in the better teams of England and Europe exploiting the lightweight nature of their midfield.
Reinforcements needed
Supporters have craved for reinforcements in the centre of the pitch for years, and this summer transfer window is no different. Unlike in previous years, however, the club has been unusually revealing about specific players that they are targeting. They were seen to be keenly interested in Thiago AlcA?ntara and are now seen to be openly pursuing Cesc Fabregas. Given the unusual manner that David Moyes and the club staff have gone about their business, it is quite likely that there will be no marquee signing would be brought in to patrol the midfield by September 2.
In contrast, the player who could have played the part of anchorman to perfection is now plying his trade at the Juventus Stadium. While being capable of shielding the back four, Paul Pogba is powerful and creative in equal measure, and boasts of a sweet left foot. Often compared to countryman Patrick Vieira, he left Manchester United, though, due to lack of playing time. Unlike previous players who have snubbed Sir Alex Ferguson, he has put forth a good account of himself in Turin in a season that concluded with an Under-20 World Cup title. No new signings in midfield, however, wouldnai??i??t necessarily be doom and gloom in and around Old Trafford; as David Moyes could take a leaf out of his days over at Goodison and find a solution within his own squad.
What do Manchester United need?
In order to understand what Manchester United truly require in central midfield, it is important to understand what others in the squad have to offer. Recent seasons have seen Michael Carrick silently, and gradually, establish his place as the first name on the team sheet in the middle of the pitch. His strengths lie in short passing, ability to dictate the pace of the game as well as providing crosses to either wing. The best teams in England and Europe usually press higher up the pitch better than others; and lessening his influence on the pitch is often the key to creating chances and scoring goals against Manchester United. As for the others presently in Manchester Unitedai??i??s current squad, Tom Cleverly was labeled a promising player after a successful loan stint at Wigan Athletic three seasons ago. However, injuries and poor form have resulted in unfulfilled potential over the last couple of seasons. He is similar to Michael Carrick in terms of passing ability, with the difference being that he tends to burst forward more often.
For all their ability on the ball, Carrick and Cleverly (and others) tend to get caught out against teams that do not offer time and space on the ball. More often than not, this would take place against the Manchester Cityai??i??s of this world ai??i?? those that bulldozed their way through the centre of the park. In this regard, the squad needs a player who is physically strong and will not get bullied off the ball. However, as Manchester United play in a system that requires regular and quick recycling of possession; they need someone who is technically capable on the ball. Such a setup requires sound passing ability, as well as to serve as a goal scoring target in the penalty area. It may sound far-fetched, but Phil Jones may just be that player to fit into such a role on a regular basis.
Phil Jones
He may have originally joined Manchester United as a central defender; but Phil Jones is known to be capable of playing a number of positions on the pitch. At Blackburn Rovers, he was often deployed as a defensive midfielder by Sam Allardyce. He is great at heading and is mobile enough for a centre half. However, his tendency to burst forward has helped him adjust to his duties in midfield whenever Sir Alex has called upon him to do so. Most importantly, he is capable of shielding the back four and ensuring that nothing gets past him. Not many footballers go to the BernabAi??u to mark Cristiano Ronaldo and come back with their pride and dignity intact.
At this point in time, Phil Jones is currently fourth or fifth choice in central defence. Given that Rafael has improved by leaps and bounds, he is not going to find much game time at as a full-back either. He is a powerful player and is capable of playing in a box-to-box role. He is one among the rare breed of defensive players, today, that possesses sound technical ability on the ball; with close control good enough to attract fouls in dangerous positions. At this point in time, he looks to be on track to becoming a new-age John Oai??i??Shea. He may be no Roy Keane, but a switch to central midfield might prove to be one step to taking Manchester United back to the days when Owen Hargreaves provided similar solidity in the centre of the park on a regular basis.
