Manchester United – 3 Man Defence Could Compensate For Weaker Wing-Play

For years now, Manchester United’s attacking incisiveness has been associated with wing play, yet it seems like the time for wingers at Old Trafford may finally be up.

A lot of Manchester United fans today would struggle to remember a time when Ryan Giggs did not play for their club, or a time when someone like David Beckham or Christiano Ronaldo was not tearing down opposition flanks to devastating effect.

Manchester United’s game was in fact characterized by the counter attack, Ai??breaking through one of the wings before a blistering run ended in a cross and a goal at the opposite end. So much was the terror of this wing play that many opponents chose to play defensive midfielders even in wide positions to curb this style while others simply stood and watched aghast as their goal was attacked.Ai??This trend, however, has been changing for a while now.Ai??As harsh or biased as it may sound, the demise of wing play at Old Trafford has coincided with Christiano Ronaldo’s world record transfer to Real Madrid.Ai??Since then, Sir Alex Ferguson tried various wing options, chief among them being Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young.

Nani, Valencia & Young

Nani was always slated as the successor to fellow Portuguese CR7, but never materialized. Nani is a mercurial player. On a good day, he can run circles around opposition defenders before sending in passes that split the opposition completely. On a bad day, he is utterly frustrating with his loose performances.

Antonio Valencia arrived in the wake of Ronaldo’s departure and was seen by many as the drop in replacement for the latter. Greats like Ronaldo, however, are few and far between and Valencia was never at the same level. Still one could not fault the Ecuadorian for not trying his best. For almost one and a half season (including a break for a horrifying ankle injury), Valencia did his bit down the right flank.

AAi??utility player, the kind Sir Alex preferred, Valencia can play in almost any position. Never afraid to take on the opposition defenders going forward while sensible and efficient at defending. That said, he is still not a standout winger and definitely not at the same level as Ronaldo.Ai??Particularly, his last season was fairly poor, when it appeared that the added weight of being handed United’s prized No. 7 shirt did not sit well with him. His performance dropped and more significantly his confidence gave way. He quickly became a one trick pony where he received the ball out wide, ran as fast as he could to the opposition’s box, did an overfoot dribble on the ball before making a cross on his right foot.Ai??This tactic worked for a handful of games before backrooms realised the pattern and pretty soon full backs had to only wait patiently for Valencia to stop the ball and do his overfoot dribble which gave them the opportunity to calmly steal the ball. This season he has gone back to his old No. 25 jersey and has performed better, though not at the same level as two years ago.

Ashley Young, who moved to Manchester United a few years ago has been the biggest disappointment of the three. Young is not very helpful in defense and, while playing down his preferred left side, does not provide adequate cover to Patrice Evra. More importantly, however, he does not have the right set of pace and skill to run down the flank and confound opponents on a regular basis. Too often, Young gets caught making the same moves repeatedly, with little success, and has done his reputation no good by the number of diving incidents that he has been involved in during the last year. It would not surprise too many people if Moyes decided to sell the player this summer or even as early as January, if the price is right.

Alternatives

Currently Old Trafford is witnessing the ascendancy of a bright, young star in the form of Adnan Januzaj who has made waves in international football after a series of brilliant performances down the left flank for the reigning English champions. This, however, comes with a unique problem that Moyes must tackle. Januzaj has been good so far but he is still too young and inexperienced to sustain the physical and mental rigor that the top flight demands. Moyes would do better to use him sparingly and allow him to get used to the Premier League or he may end up burning out the young player. Or worse, destroying his confidence.

Summarily, this puts Moyes in an iffy position, wing-play wise, with very few options. What he does have, however, are centre backs, and a lot of them. It stands to reason if they can be better employed in the overall scheme of things. Moyes can start by using three instead of two CBs at the back without full-backs. This does spread the defense a bit thin but it will start making sense in a minute. Ahead of the back 3, he can play 4-5 midfielders in a staggered formation. Finally, there could be two strikers up top.

This not only provides some defensive cover to the midfield but also allows United to play positions that they have a strong cover for. These formations also allow Shinji Kagawa to play in his preferred central position, which, if not anything else, would prevent Jurgen Klopp from curling into a foetal position and crying himself to sleep every night. Interestingly the second option also gives United the opportunity to play both Rooney and van Persie up front. This partnership had worked very well last season but is yet to flourish this season primarily because of the reduced time that both are on field simultaneously. Obviously the formation looks narrower up front and is a departure from United’s legendary wing play that uses the width of the field but sometimes when the fight calls for the use of guns, one must discard swords and chivalry along with it.
