Man United v Real Madrid – “Cristiano Ronaldo Is Already An All-time Real Madrid Legend” (Fan View)

Mourinho v Sir Alex Ferguson

As the most awaited clash between Manchester United and Real Madrid dawns upon us, our team of experts, Nipun Malhotra (NM) and Rizwan Ahmed (RM), get down to the business of previewing the clash from the perspective of a supporter.

What transpired was a couple of hours long conversation covering various aspects such as Munich, the Champions’ League triumphs and the current teams scenarios.Ai?? Though the discussion was insanely long, enlightening and on various topics, the editors decided to shorten it to reflect today’s encounter. The remaining part of the discussion will probably be shared later in the form of features as the European Cup progresses. Until then, enjoy!

RM:Ai?? It is no secret that Sir Alex Fergusonai??i??s primary objective this season is the Premier League crown while Real Madridai??i??s is the European cup. Do you think that this factor Ai??could play against Manchester United at Old Trafford?

NM:You are not wrong in that one, regaining our league crown was

Ferguson’s ready for yet another challenge!

the primary objective this term especially after the heartbreak of last season. However, for its worth leagueai??i??s all but in the bag with the 12 point cushion. Ergo, this game against Real has all the attention and rightly so.

United and Ferguson have a point to prove in Europe as well after being knocked out in the group stages last season. Furthermore, this could perhaps be Fergieai??i??s last tilt at winning his 3rd UCL crown and establishing his name as one of the greatest of all time on the continent as well.

Ai??RM:Ai?? Phil Jonesai??i?? man marking of Ronaldo in the first leg was excellent but Ronaldo still scored. With Jones a doubt for the clash, does Ferguson have anyone else to try and press Ronaldo? How can Ferguson stop Ronaldo is the question on everybodyai??i??s lips.

NM:Ai?? Jones was stupendous in the first leg and one of the primary reasons United hold a slender advantage going into this game. Now that Jones is out for the second leg, Ferguson doesnai??i??t really have anyone who could do a similar job but itai??i??s Old Trafford and perhaps the roles have reversed somewhat.

United would be a different animal on their own turf and maybe itai??i??s Real who will have to do the containing. Rooney however could be the man tracking Ronaldo back on every opportunity but nothing like the sort of role Jones was earmarked to play at the Bernabeu.

Ai??RM: Real Madrid and United clashes have always been great affairs but recent history suggests that it is Real Madrid which has good memories rather than Manchester United and these clashes have been defined by the genius of a few great men like Redondo and Ronaldo. Do you think united can payback this time or could we see another performance-for-the-ages from Ozil or Ronaldo?

NM: We at United are wary of the skills of the Real players and none more so than Ronaldo. Cristiano on his day is unstoppable but there is a genuine belief that this United side can match their Real counterparts and even surpass them. Certainly, there is no fear.Ai??

I will go ahead and pick Michael Carrick as the man who could decide the outcome of this tie if United go on to win this one. Carrick is the lynchpin of our side, from halting Real attacks to instigating United offenses, everything must go through the Englishman.

RM: One accusation which has always been leveled at Ferguson is his tactical inability to influence big European matches. Considering his illustrious career, donai??i??t you think Alex Fergusonai??i??s lack of tactical nous compared to the likes of Mourinho or Guardiola could be a reason for Manchester United to win only 2 European cups or is it because of some other factor?

NM: Well in the past yes, now not so. Fergie has evolved over the years into a much more balanced manager mixing attack with caution and respecting the pedigree of his opponents.

There are numerous reasons why United have failed to win more on the continent, from English teams expulsion in Europe to only be allowed to field only three foreign players in the early years. Also, lately with the emergence of Barca and Lionel Messi, United have just faltered at the final hurdle twice. I would say 2 European cups and 2 finals is a decent return although even Fergie would admit that the core of the ai???Trebleai??i?? winning side should have at least one more somewhere down the line.

RM: When two great teams play there is always an animosity, a desire to belittle the other. Bayern and Real Madrid, Chelsea and Barcelona are a few examples of this inter-continental phenomenon. But, Real Madrid and Manchester United, both considered to be the biggest rivals for the most popular club award, there is a feeling of genuine warmth between them. There has hardly been any unsavory incident, barring the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga, which makes this clash even special. What do you think could be the reason of this?

NM: I think the special bond the two managers share is definitely one of the reasons. Jose and Fergie are great friends and have tremendous respect for each others achievements and that has simmered any unsavory feeling between the two clubs. Ronaldo is a bond as well and in the past players like Beckham, RVN have played for both the clubs and that could be a reason as well.

Moreover from Unitedai??i??s side there is huge respect for Madridai??i??s glorious European past and no one at United will ever forget Realai??i??s helping hand at the time of Unitedai??i??s greatest tragedy.

Enough of the love for now, its my turn to grill you!

NM: Ai??Ai?? After a record breaking last season domestically for Real, one where they looked imperious and often frighteningly good, whatai??i??s gone wrong this term? Where the summer acquisitions not up to the mark or was the squad too entangled in inner politics to consistently play together as team ai???Madridai??i???

Ai??RM:Ai?? It is hard to point at one thing and say this is what has gone wrong. There have been quite a few disturbances and unsurprisingly they involve Mourinho. He has his own working philosophy and sometimes this may contradict with the clubai??i??s or a particular players. Now, even though it has cost us La Liga, all those issues are behind us and now the team is looking as imperious as last year.

We have not made too many summer acquisitions. Frankly, last yearai??i??s team needed no tinkering. Only Luka Modric was added as a cover for both Alonso and Ozil. So, it is really down to the old players performing poorly.

NM:Ai??Ai??Ai?? Do you believe in this third season syndrome with respect to Jose, or is it just an over glorified myth? Also how does it feel when your manager isn’t too keenly attached to your club and always looking for a job in his beloved England?

RM:Ai?? As you put it excellently, I believe it is an over glorified myth. Every manager has goals and challenges which spur him on. Sir Alex revels in deconstructing and then reconstructing teams at the same club. Arsene Wenger has his goals with Arsenal. Likewise, Mourinho has his own goals and he does fulfill them. I donai??i??t think he really cares about the number of seasons at a club. Once he achieves his goals, he moves onto a greater challenge.

I am fine as long as he does his job well. He is a professional and every individual has his own set of goals. But until they donai??i??t come in between the club’s ambitions, it is fine.

NM:Ai??Ai?? How huge and eagerly anticipated is the ai???La Decimaai??i?? among the Madridista? Will Jose earn a place in Real folklore if he is to be the one that brings home the crown, also will he be finally welcomed with open arms by all sections of Madrid fans?

RM: It has been a long time coming. Real Madridai??i??s image is synonymous with the European cup. It has been more than a decade since the club has won the coveted trophy and considering it would be the tenth, it is a dream for all the clubai??i??s fans.

Jose Mourinho was a fan favorite last year but this year after his public fallout with Iker Casillas, he has fallen down the pecking order. But, as they say, a series of victories makes things right. The two victories over Barcelona, and the manner of them, has put him back in the spotlight and his name was sung in the aftermath of the victories; which means that, if he does succeed in bringing La Decima to the club, everything will be forgotten, and he would certainly earn a place in Real Madridai??i??s illustrious folklore. But, his chances of continuing at the club remain slim. Either way, his job description of wresting dominance from Barcelona has been accomplished.

NM:Ai??Ai??Ai?? Whatai??i??s the view on Cristiano Ronaldo among the Real fan base? Is he adored and loved beyond comparison? Surely Ronnie has earned the right to be remembered as one of the all time Real Madrid legends? FYI at United you can still hear the terraces chanting ai???Viva Ronaldoai???, do you fear losing out on his services in the foreseeable future?

RM: Frankly, Cristiano Ronaldoai??i??s stock was not as high as Raul, Morientes or Zidane at the start of the season. He was counted as one of the worldai??i??s best players but was not showered with unadulterated affection. Also, Ronaldoai??i??s sadness did not go down too well with quite a few fans, though in fairness, the Portuguese may have a point when he was not backed fully for the European Player of the year award.

But post that debacle; Ronaldo has emerged like never before. As Real Madrid slumped to one defeat to another, as the X-factor fizzled out, there was one man holding the team from falling into mediocrity. The team has been awful in a few matches, but Ronaldo was not. His commitment, his audacity and his willingness to never give up has slowly but surely grown among the Madrid faithful. In a few games in which Ronaldo was unavailable, Real Madrid was poor. He lifted up the entire club all by himself in hours of darkness and despair, particularly this year and his contributions have been simply astonishing. He has scored for Real in every big game thus far and even if he didnai??i??t, like the ClA?sico last week, he has simply raised the standard of the game by his mere presence.

He has won over the hearts of Madridistaai??i??s completely this year and there is no doubt now about how much the fans love their talisman. He is now adored and loved as much as any Real legend. There is hardly any doubt that Ronaldo is an all-time Real Madrid legend and at this rate will be remembered fondly in the same vein as Raul, Guti, Zidane and ButragueAi??o. Although some say, he can be as great as Di Stefano or Puskas, I wouldnai??i??t go that far as yet.

His contract extension situation is not as ideal as we would love but I donai??i??t think we would be losing him in the near future. He is at a great club where there is no dearth of challenges which will spur him on and on top of that the fans now adore him. So, no.

NM:Ai??Ai?? Coming back to the all important game in question, what will Realai??i??s approach be? Will Mourinho set up his team to attack from the onset and score that vital away goal or will Jose set up his troops to mix caution with aggression. How different will Real set up both tactically and personnel wise from the first leg?Ai?? Also, put on your betting hat and go for a prediction.

RM: There is no secret about the way Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho will approach this game: Counter-attack. Real will be happy if United want to keep the ball as long as they stay away from the final third and will look for a misplaced pass or an error to launch an attack.

Jose Mourinho is a coach who is always aggressive and cautious at the same time and with the troops as his disposal, he can afford to be both.

Coming to the third part of your question, I donai??i??t think there will be many tactical changes. If there is one, it could be that they could play without a striker upfront with Ronaldo and Di Maria on the wings and Ozil through the centre. Pepe could play in the midfield as he did against Barcelona in the ClA?sico, alongside Alonso and Khedira to enable more freedom to the both and spray the ball with greater control to the wings. Also, this could mean wresting midfield control from Carrick and co. and negating Rooney in case he drops deep. With Jose, itai??i??s hard to guess, but this is what I expect from him at Old Trafford and a victory lap reminiscent of 2003.

I am poor at predictions but I expect Cristiano Ronaldo to enthrall Old Trafford as the Brazilian Ronaldo did in 2002-03 and Real Madrid to emerge victorious. Not bad for a prediction, eh?

Ai??NM: We will see. May the best team win!
