Liverpool go into this game with an opportunity to not just pick up 3 points, but also to go top of the table and stay there for a night. Ai??You do not get anything for being top of the table in October, but Liverpool supporters will nevertheless hope to see it happen. Crystal Palace, on the other hand, have won just one game this season, that too against crisis ridden Sunderland. The Eagles are desperately in need of points to take them out of the relegation zone; but look prime candidates to go down. TheHardTackle takes a look at what to expect.
Team News and Tactics
Liverpool
On paper, they will not have better chances to do get the required three points. Liverpool have, in the past, gone unrewarded for passing opposing teams off the pitch; but so far this season, they have come been able to grind out results despite not displaying with the fluidity associated with a squad managed by Brendan Rodgers.
The Northern Irishman has experimented with formations in so far this season with varied success. Glen Johnsonai??i??s injury, then Andre Wisdomai??i??s nervousness at right back followed by the limp performance during Southamptonai??i??s visit to Anfield has prompted Rodgers to tinker with tactics and personnel. Injury to Coutinho and the (thus) timely return of Luis Suarez offered a solution in the form of a 3-4-1-2 that has seen mixed success. Saturday could see this formation being deployed once again.
Incredibly, Lucas will be the first player to serve the customary one-game ban for accumulating 5 yellow cards. Rodgers, however, has been singing praises of Jordan Henderson at press conferences of late, and may move him to a central position as a stop-gap replacement in defensive midfield. He is also known to spring the odd surprise in selection, and considering that Victor Moses was often preferred in the right wing by Rafa Benitez due to his defensive work rate, one can expect see the Nigerian playing the role of a wing-back. Mamadou Sakho had a good game at Sunderland, as did Martin Skrtel. Luis Alberto should make his first league start at Anfield. He has been in good form with the U21s; and was composed on the ball in his cameo during the 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Ian Holloway recently claimed that watching Swansea on a few occasions when he was out of work ai???completely changed the way he views footballai??? and inspired his current approach to the game. Blackpool were a joy to watch under his management, but struggled defensively and, sadly, went down into the Championship and have not come back up since. The walking quote-machine is now more ai???pragmaticai??i??, and admits that Crystal Palace got promoted more by being hard to break down, and then counter attacking. The Eagles no longer have Wilfred Zaha in their ranks, and with Glenn Murray also on the sidelines, have lost that attacking verve that got them up to the big league.
It must be noted that Palace are good in the air. They have won 59% of their aerial battles in the league thus far, as against Liverpoolai??i??s 44% success rate. Hence, set pieces will be their primary source of goalscoring chances. The Eagles have plenty of height and strength in their side ai??i?? especially with South African Kagisho Dikgacoi and Aussie Mile Jedinak forming the double pivot in midfield. The latter, however, has given the ball away in dangerous positions more than once this season ai??i?? resulting in a goal on one occasion and the sending off of his midfield parter at Old Trafford.
Their main source of attacks is on the right flank; hence one can expect Joel Ward and Jason Puncheon to keep Jose Enrique busy on Saturday. Marouane Chamakh and Dwight Gayle will be deployed up front. The two will interchange positions during the course of the match ai??i?? the Moroccan will aim at using his height, holding up the ball in attacking positions and creating space for Gayle to run at defenders from time to time.

Player to watch
Steven Gerrard
Captain Fantastic has yet to live up to his moniker this season, until now. However, players of his quality only need a moment or two to turn games around ai??i?? one free kick, one through ball like that thing of beauty that set up the first of Luis Suarezai??i??s goals against Sunderland. Moreover, with Lucas suspended, much will depend on the Liverpool skipperai??i??s ability to pull the strings in midfield, so to speak.
Honourable mention must be made for Julian Speroni. Goalkeepers have tended to have the game of their lives at Anfield over the last 2 to 3 seasons ai??i?? turning wins into draws for Liverpool and draws into losses on more than one occasion. Liverpool will need to be clinical and ensure that they put away the chances that they create. Saturday could well see Gerrard work some magic.

Expect Liverpool to see this one out with relative ease. Luis Suarez is now back and has shown that he can play up front without the manager having to deploy Daniel Sturridge out of position. Ian Holloway is likely to send his players out with the aim of escaping with a draw. The Eagles should provide a fair amount of resistance; but the overall quality and strength of the Reds will be enough to ensure a comfortable victory at home.
