Liverpool FC have slipped from the upper reaches of the Premier League in recent years, but have just come through a season of transition under Northern Irishman Brendan Rodgers. TheHardTackle takes a look at the squad and what lies ahead, in what will prove to be a pivotal season for the Reds.
The Manager and Staff
It has not been the easiest of tasks to accomplish at Anfield in the recent past, but Brendan Rodgers has managed to complete one full season as Liverpool manager. The Ulsterman has come under the scanner during the past season due to many reasons ai??i?? the deadline day fiasco, a threadbare squad, the poorest start to any season by Liverpool since 1911, an early exit (at home) from the Capital One Cup, the upset at Oldham in the FA Cup as well as awkward man-management with regard to certain players bought by Kenny Dalglish. However, he is trusted by the American owners, and as a result, has slowly but steadily grown into the job once occupied by Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. The Rafa Benitez fan brigade still surfaces every once in a while, and King Kennyai??i??s apologists continue to feel better about of sacking; but Brendan Rodgers has shown enough to prove that he is a manager worth investing time and money in.
Brendan Rodgers is assisted by Welshman Colin Pascoe, as well as former Liverpool midfielder Mike Marsh. Spaniard Rodolfo Borrell is in charge of the Academy, while Alex Inglethorpe is the manager of the much talked about U21 squad. While Managing Director Ian Ayreai??i??s active involvement in recruitment has worried Liverpool supporters in the past, he has shown himself to be capable of striking deals that go a long way in deriving value for money, as well as making it harder for other clubs to bully Liverpool in the transfer market.
Changes to the Squad
This summer transfer window has been pivotal to the immediate and future success of the club, mainly due to the retirement of Jamie Carragher and the loss of leadership and direction that comes with the Scouserai??i??s vocal presence at the back. The club acted swiftly in swooping for a soon to be out-of-contract Kolo Toure as experienced cover for Carragher. Luis Alberto was then bought from Sevilla on the back of a stellar season on loan at Barcelona B, for A?6.8 million. Fellow Spaniard Iago Aspas too, was signed from Celta Vigo for a total of A?7 million. The signing that gathered the most amount of attention though, is that of Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from Sunderland for A?9 million.
Brendan Rodgers initially maintained that the Belgian was brought in to improve the depth of the squad. But, knowing the difficulty in keeping two top goalkeepers happy at a club like Liverpool prompted the loaning out of the long-serving Pepe Reina to Rafa Benitezai??i??s Napoli. Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher has retired, Andy Carroll has found a club that plays football to his strengths, Jonjo Shelvey has been sold so that he can get more game time, while Jay Spearing is finally out of the spotlight. Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi and defender Danny Wilson have both been released; while Stewart Downing seems to be on his way to West Ham as you are reading this. And, in a move that will be watched closely over the coming season, Suso will be spending the 2013-14 season at newly promoted Almeria in the La Liga.
Brendan Rodgers has claimed that Liverpool are not yet finished in the transfer market for the summer, and that one new signing is ai???imminentai??i??. Given the managerai??i??s statements thus far, it is quite likely that the club will be looking at strengthening the left-back and central defensive positions; but positions in the attacking third too, given that Stewart Downing has just sealed a A?6 million switch to West Ham United.

Pre-season form may be no indicator of what lies ahead, but Liverpool have won every match in pre-season except for a narrow defeat to Celtic at Dublin. Despite the loss of Jamie Carragher and the below performances of the past season of Martin Ai??krtel and Sebastian Coates, the defence has conceded only two goals during this time. Ivory Coast international Kolo Toure has settled in nicely ai??i?? despite fasting due to Ramadan, he has worked well with Daniel Agger, as well as ably assisted the inexperienced Andre Wisdom. Simon Mignolet has been an assured presence in goal so far, and should be the imposing figure that the manager is looking for between the posts. Iago Aspas has featured in almost every pre-season game (due to the absence of Luis Suarez) and has netted 4 goals during this time, while getting into great positions to score more.
Martin Kelly is back from injury looking stronger than before; Lucas Leiva is gaining consistency, while Joe Allen has recovered from a troublesome shoulder injury. Italian centre forward Fabio Borini has also featured during pre-season, bringing with him some confidence from his performances for Italy in the U21 European championship. Philippe Coutinho, though, continues to look like a steal at A?8.5 million; and a stellar pre-season is evidence enough that he will be the key to Liverpoolai??i??s destiny at the end of the season.
Important Games and Critical Moments
Liverpool last won an opening day fixture in 2008. In this regard, Stoke Cityai??i??s visit to Anfield gains additional importance. The entry of a new manager coupled with wholesale changes made to their squad provides the Reds with some hope of improving their record against the Potters. A positive opening day usually means a good season ahead, so fingers will definitely be crossed over at Anfield.
Liverpool may not be direct rivals, but matches against Manchester United are still significant. The Red Devils visit to Anfield in the third game of the season will be a fair indicator of the Redsai??i?? progress; while away day at Old Trafford takes place on the Ides of March – a critical part of the season.
The week following Christmas brings forth two trips in three days to the Etihad Stadium and Stamford Bridge. Liverpool performed well during this busy period in 2012-13 (except against Stoke); and have generally raised/dropped their game to the level of the opposition in recent years. Positive results, here, could provide some much-needed momentum that can be carried onto the New Year.
Away from the league, hosting Notts County in Round 2 of the Capital One Cup will be a fair indicator of the seriousness with which Liverpool will participate in cup competitions this year. There is no Europa League to participate in; so one hopes that a deeper run will be made in knockout tournaments this year.
The keys to a good season
While Liverpool are known to raise their game to the level of the opposition under Rafa Benitez and Kenny Dalglish, the same has not been true under the current boss. Save for the 3-2 win over Tottenham in March, the Reds had not beaten any of the teams placed above them in the league table throughout the season. Some improvement on that front will help.
Unlike in previous seasons, Liverpool possessed a great record against lower mid-table teams as well as those in the relegation zone in 2012-13. The latter half of the season was littered with 4-0, 5-0 and 6-0 wins, as well as goals in other wins too. The gaffer and the players will hope that this trend continues this season too.
As things stand, Luis Suarez will be a Liverpool player until the World Cup in Brazil. The stance taken by the owners, and the manager, is commendable. Keeping a player agitating for a move is not always wise, but this saga has sent out a message to other clubs that Liverpool will not easily be bullied by other clubs in the transfer market. One potential problem that could occur, is that the Uruguayanai??i??s attitude could set a bad example and either (i) turn certain players against the manager and prompt them to ai???down toolsai??i?? and/or (ii) disrupt the unity and team spirit that King Kenny and Brendan Rodgers worked hard to foster. Luis Suarez may have attempted to force a move away in order to play in the Champions League, but could be the man that prevents Liverpool from achieving that very objective. Brendan Rodgers may not be the most experienced and accomplished manager around, but this is a risk not many managers are willing to take.
Since the club had done its business before the beginning of July; the new arrivals have put up a decent account for themselves in this season. Their performances this season will be pivotal. On the other hand, it also remains to be seen how Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho follow up the bright start to their Liverpool careers. Good performances from those who joined the club in 2013 will be a much-needed confidence boost to both the ownership and management of the club, and will aid in further strengthening of the squad, wherever needed, in the winter.
Given that Jamie Carragher will be sitting next to Gary Neville in the Sky Sportsai??i?? studio, it is imperative that ai???Captain Fantasticai??i?? Steven Gerrard stay fit like he did in the 2012-13 season. He is now the senior-most player in the squad and his presence is essential to the continued development of the likes of Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Ibe, Martin Kelly and Daniel Sturridge. Moreover, he has successfully remodeled his game to suit the system that the manager is trying to put in place, and is thus among the most valuable players on the pitch.
Lucas must stay fit too. With Conor Coady being sent out on loan to Sheffield United, there is no cover for him in the squad. This being a World Cup year, he will look to play his way into Luiz Felipe Scolariai??i??s plans for the tournament. Moreover, his injury in 2011 coincided with an alarming dip in form that cost Kenny Dalglish his job, as well as resulted in Joe Allen playing out of position under Brendan Rodgers. It is no coincidence that whenever the Brazilian is fit an sharp, the results turn out the be better than otherwise.
Predictions for the season
Liverpool have strengthened the depth of their squad by recruiting early in the transfer window. However, manager Brendan Rodgers has claimed that the club has been ai???working hard to improve the first teamai??? by the end of August. The Northern Irishman is the first manager in five years to by present in two complete pre-season tours though; under him, the club has made steady progress in terms of results on the pitch.
The new television deal has resulted in even mid-table and lower mid-table teams sign quality players from elsewhere in Europe; hence, getting into the Top 4 may be a step too far. However, the squad is well-placed to finish higher than in 2012-13. Sixth is likely, fifth a genuine possibility in case of a good start and finish to the season. One cannot discount fourth completely though, given the instability that has seen 4 of the top 6 placed teams from the last season change their managers.
On the other hand, Liverpool are well-placed for a better Cup run than in 2012-13. Quarterfinals or better in either the Capital One Cup or the FA Cup is not unlikely, although a trip to Wembley will be nice.
