Martin Skrtel and Joe Allen’s current standing in Liverpool FC are a symptom of Brendan Rodgers having to drop his long-term strategy for short-term benefit, this season. A look at where they were supposed to stand in his roadmap, and where they have actually landed up.
Joe Allen is meant to be key-cog around which Rodgers’ passing style of football can be deployed, but a series of injuries have kept him from stringing a good run of games together for some time now. In complete contrast to him is Martin Skrtel, who should ideally not be playing any part in a football side that counts on each and every player being good at passing and holding on to the ball, something he definitely does not excel at. But Rodgers has recently been forced to adapt not only the kind of formations he uses, but even the underlying style of play – leading to the recent 3-man defence, a formation in which Skrtel has excelled in the central sweeper role. Here’s a look at how this situation came to be, and what the likely course corrections in the future could mean for the two players.
Rodgers’ “Death -by-Football” Long-Term Vision
Different managers have different reasons for selecting specific formations and personnel for different games. For someone like Rafa Benitez, a somewhat reactive manager many have stated, a major deciding factor was often the kind of opposition he was going to face: he once played right-back Alvaro Arbeloa on the left against Barcelona to better mark Lionel Messi when he cut inside from that flank. Brendan Rodgers is a contrast to Rafa, in that he prefers to play to his teams’ strengths, rather than his opponents’ weaknesses. This in turn means that he has an idea in his head of how his Liverpool FC team should be playing, irrespective of the kind of opposition faced.
Which leads us to the question: how does Brendan Rodgers want Liverpool to play? The answer is quite simple, as it is something he has reiterated time and again since he joined the club:

The concept he described as “death-by-football” revolves around controlling possession and effectively wearing out the opposition – mentally as well as physically – to the point of defeat. It seemed like he was doing a decent job of implementing it at the beginning of his first season (2012-13), as Liverpool regularly finished games with the lion’s share of possession – though they weren’t getting the kind of results they felt they deserved in these games. Results improved after January 2013, with the signings of Daniel Sturridge and Coutinho providing the needed creativity and thrust in the final third. Though results improved, the style of play was not quite the passing-based football seen earlier in the season.
Between January 2013, up till the Swansea fixture in September, this make-shift counter-attacking based style of play managed to earn a good haul of points, but it must be observed that they have recorded only a singular win (the 1-0 win over David Moyes’ Manchester United in September) over any of last season’s top-6 teams (Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton). To judge this as a winning formula going forward would not be right.
The High Pressing Short-Term Detour
After Coutinho’s injury in the Swansea game, and Joe Allen still unavailable due to injury, Rodgers was faced with a major dilemma. His midfield, quite simply, was looking fairly sub-standard. To clarify, it was sub-standard with respect to the kind of football he wants Liverpool to play. Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva and Jordan Henderson are all accomplished central midfielders with bags of talents, but none of them can really hold on to the ball and play small tiki-taka-esque passes to their colleagues the way Philippe and Joe can.
Rodgers really had one option left: play a style of football that best utilises the availability of two of the best center forwards in the League, while at the same time calling upon the swelling ranks of central defenders he had amassed over the summer. On came the high-pressing 3-4-1-2, the only real means of compensating for the lack of creativity in midfield by simply overwhelming the opposition with overloads in attack. At the same time, the high-press allows the team to win the ball back quickly.Ai??One player who most definitely benefited from the switch to a 3-man defence is Martin Skrtel. The reason for his return to glory is just as apparent as the reason why he was ousted from the starting eleven in the first place: Skrtel is an old fashioned hard-tackling center-half, with little to no skill in retaining and passing the ball. Ai??In Rodgers’ passing-intensive 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Lucas Leiva drops deeper while the two center-halves spread out. This usually means that, in order to pass the ball out of defence, the right-center-back should be capable of receiving the ball from Lucas (if he is under pressure, say) and pass it onto the right-back or one of the other central midfielders. Skrtel simply does not have that kind of ball-holding and passing ability. In a 3-4-1-2 on the other hand, Skrtel was deployed at the central sweeper, with the other two center backs being the ones who spread out further when the team is attacking. In such scenarios, Skrtel is much more in his comfort zone: he has to simply defend the zone around the 18-yard box and pass it to either one of the other two defenders or to the goalkeeper.
The shift in style did its job for the team: it blunted the blow of losing Coutinho and allowed Liverpool to defeat inferior oppositions like Sunderland, Crystal Palace and West Brom. It did, not too surprisingly, falter in the face of stronger opposition like Newcastle and Arsenal. However it has been nothing but a clever switch in tactics to suit the injury-hit squad, not a sign of any shift in style or philosophy.
Rodgers Will Revert To Passing Football
Many fans and pundits had speculated earlier (especially after the West Brom win) that the 3-4-1-2 was here to stay. While one can understand that train of thought, surely all of Rodgers’ biggest decisions have pointed in a different direction. This is not just based on his statements before joining the club in 2012, but pretty much every decision he has taken since. For instance, here’s a list of every central midfielder (i.e. any player capable of playing in the central midfield area) Rodgers has signed so far: Joe Allen, Philippe Coutinho, Nuri Sahin (loan), Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas. With the possible exception of Aspas (who is anyway considered more of a forward), all the other have earned a reputation for being good at both passing and holding on to the ball. They clearly fit into the Rodgers “death-by-football” blueprint much better than a high-pressing style of play.
So if the passing-centric style is supposed to be the way forward, why hasn’t it been seen more often in recent times? Quite simply because Rodgers just hasn’t had all the right personnel available together. Ideally, a midfield containing Leiva, Allen and Coutinho is what Rodgers will be looking forward to deploying, a combination he has not really had available to him for a decent stretch of games yet. He will have the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson and Luis Alberto available to either take the fourth vacant spot in midfield (assuming a 4-man defence and Suarez and Sturridge playing up front) or be rotated in place of these three for certain games.
Joe Allen is the missing piece in Rodgers’ puzzle. One of the weakest part of Liverpool’s games so far have been the transitions from defence to attack – the ball has been lost in these situations far too often, with the central midfield being a major culprit. Allen’s metronome like pass-and-move play (Neither Gerrard nor Henderson have been able to display so far)Ai??is what is needed to make the team gel. If he can find the kind of form he showed in early to mid 2012, he could prove to be the one player to bring the whole Brendan Rodgers blueprint together.
Skrtel & Allen Have Till January To Make An Impact
Martin Skrtel, a misfit in the world of “death by football”, is getting regular playing time while Joe Allen, someone who seems a natural fit for it, spends most of his time on the bench. Such has been their footballing fate. But this does not mean that this how things will remain. A grueling fixture list now stands in front of Liverpool FC, with the remaining days of 2013 including away fixtures against rivals Everton , Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City. There will be ample opportunities to excel, and even more opportunities to falter. What these two make of the opportunities presented to them in this period could have the final say in where their future stands at Liverpool FC.
