Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers has praised Steven Gerrard as he approaches his 100th goal in the league, while the Northern Irishman has also refuted Harry Redknapp’s claims.
The Liverpool midfielder is also just one goal away from scoring his 100th in the Premier League for the Merseyside club. He reached one step closer to this amazing land mark after scoring against Crystal Palace from a penalty. That goal against Palace meant that Gerrard has now scored in every season since the 1999-2000 campaign.
As Liverpool travels to the St Jamesai??i?? Park on Saturday, much of the build-up to that match against Newcastle United has revolved around Steven Gerrard. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers also showered his praise on the England international and highlighted his qualities as a footballer.
“It’s remarkable really; you saw him in the (England) game during the week.
“What gets lost with Steven sometimes is that people talk about him as this great captain and a great leader, and what people forget is that he’s still a world-class player. He’s got big talent.
“He scored what you would probably say was a typical Gerrard goal the other night – breaking forward with power and pace and just when it looked like it was getting away from him, he reached and got his toe to it with a great finish.
“It’s something I’ve been fully aware of since I’ve been here. He’s probably the best player that I’ve ever worked with at tempo.
“The quality he can play with when the tempo is really high in a game is incredible.
“He’s a remarkable man and a remarkable captain. England should be honoured to have someone like that represent them on and off the field and he’s still got a number of years left in him yet to turn in great performances.” ai??i?? The Liverpool manager said ahead of the game.
Brendan Rodgers was also in the news following Harry Redknappai??i??s claim that the Liverpool manager had agreed to become his assistant once he was appointed the manager of the Englandai??i??s national team. Redknapp, who was considered to be the favortie for the England job after Fabio Capello departed, made these claims in his recently published autobiography. But Brendan Rodgers has refuted these claims and said that he never agreed to take up the role, he only agreed to consider the offer, if and when it arrived.
“My version was that April when I was manager at Swansea, Harry had asked me after the game when we played.
“He pulled me aside and it was a unique conversation because he was obviously very confident – as was the nation – he was going to be offered the national team job.
“Here was aAi??Premier LeagueAi??manager asking another Premier League manager to come and work with him at the European Championships.
“It was a quick conversation. I was aware he was very keen for me to team up with him if he was given the role.
“There was no decision either way. Out of the respect I have for Harry I was going to consider it.
“He is a wonderful chemist, he knows what he wants from a team, knows the types of players and knows the exciting type of football and I think he wanted someone to come and implement those ideas.
“There was no answer yes or no but I would have considered it for him.
“Obviously at the end of it all it was irrelevant as the job was given to Roy and he has done a brilliant job.
“I was really happy at Swansea. I had spoken to them about the possibility but it was something that after the appointment was made there were no further thoughts on it.
