Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers’ decision to replace Pepe Reina as the No. 1 goalkeeper at Anfield was a brave one; but Simon Mignolet has done well enough so far to show that he is here to stay.
Following the conclusion of the Merseyside derby, Steven Gerrard declared that young fullback John Flanagan got the applause of the dressing room for his performance in place of Jose Enrique. However, it was the performance of Simon Mignolet (he made 8 saves, the majority of them taking place in the second half) that was the difference between an exciting draw and a morale-sapping defeat.
Loaning out Pepe Reina was unpopular, but correct
Changing the No 1 goalkeeper is always a tricky decision for a manager. Defenders benefit from having the same person form the last line of defence; while most managers prefer making in-game substitutions for positions further up the pitch. Rotation of managers is rarely known to have worked at the top level, and hence, rarely takes place. Even Sir Alex Ferguson, one of the best at squad rotation, could not sustain such a policy on a regular basis. His hand may have been forced eventually, but it was an injury to Anders Lindergaard that strengthened David De Gea’s position as Manchester United’s No 1 goalkeeper.
While one can understand Fergie’s reasoning in alternating between his two goalkeepers in 2011, there was no reason why the same could have been done at Liverpool. Brendan Rodgers’ decision to bring Simon Mignolet to Liverpool may have been forced by Pepe Reina’s indifferent form since the early stages of Kenny Dalglish’s tenure as manager, but the Spaniard was the standout goalkeeper in the league under the leadership of Rafa Benitez. A player who has won 3 Golden Glove Awards and been a part of a World cup winning squad should not be sitting on the bench.
But, more importantly, Simon Mignolet was brought in because he was a top goalkeeper. In what was a poor Sunderland squad that barely escaped relegation; the Belgian kept 11 clean sheets. Moreover, he played every single game of the season, and made a total of 149 saves (only Jussi Jaaskelainen, with 166 saves, scores better). Mignolet saved 72% of the shots on goal that he faced in 2012-13. Considering the lack of protection that he got from at Wearside from theAi?? defence and midfield, it is evident that a fair proportion of these saves were from clear cut chances than routine saves. It is fair to say that Simon Mignolet was among the best goalkeepers in 2012-13 as these kinds of performances kept Sunderland in the Premier League.
While the possibility of two goalkeepers battling it out for the No 1 spot at Anfield was a tantalising one (touched upon here, by TheHardTackle), bringing in a goalkeeper of this quality for a fee of A?9m and keeping him on the bench is bad business. It would not have made sense to loan him out either. If the purpose of doing so is to gain experience, he had enough experience from his time at Sunderland. If it was to find out whether he was good enough to play for Liverpool; there would be no better way to do so than to have him play for Liverpool itself. On the other hand, a good season from Pepe Reina would only put Liverpool on the back foot; as Barcelona would come calling for the Spaniard. So while the decision to loan Reina to Napoli for the course of the 2013-14 season may have upset the very Liverpool supporters who called for Reina to be benched, it has turned out the unpopular decision to replace the Kop favourite has indeed been right.
To his credit, Mignolet has gone unnoticed
Goalkeepers rarely get credit whenever they play well. As with Mignolet’s performance at Goodison Park, a great showing by a goalkeeper over the course of 90 minutes is often looked upon as an indication that his team is getting more from the game than they deserve. They are rarely noticed on the field, except when they make mistakes. It is not long ago that David De Gea’s shaky start to his Manchester United career invited a level of scrutiny that irked Sir Alex Ferguson; while Joe Hart is proof of the fact that mistakes made by a goalkeeper can undo the work of 10 others.
Although a third of the season has passed, question marks remain over regarding Liverpool sustaining an assault on a Top 4 spot despite currently sitting at 2nd in the table. While the Reds’ ranks are deep in defence, there are constant question marks in midfield and over the lack of options in the wings. Liverpool supporters have also fretted over the lack of backup to ‘SAS’, while injuries to fullbacks have wreaked havoc. However, despite the fact that Liverpool have kept just 1 clean sheet since the 1-0 win over Manchester United, the fact that Simon Mignolet has gone relatively unnoticed among all the scrutiny is evidence that he has done a good job replacing one of Liverpool’s most popular goalkeepers ever.
Comparisons aside, how has Mignolet fared so far (numbers and beyond)
The performance at Goodison Park against Liverpool’s local rivals was, quite clearly, Simon Mignolet’s finest performance ever since he joined the Reds. A majority of the 8 saves that he made were from clear cut chances, successfully thwarting Belgian international colleague Romelu Lukaku for 72 minutes. He was close to registering an assist at the end too, but for Tim Howard’s alert save off a left-footed volley from Suarez.
The primary responsibility of a goalkeeper is shot stopping, and Mignolet excels at it. From a statistical standpoint, he has made 3.17 saves per game this season. This is down from 3.92 while at Sunderland only because of the greater level of protection offered by Liverpool’s defence this season. While 12 games is not long enough to decide if Mignolet has made it at Anfield, his 75% of shots on target saved this season marginally surpasses the 72% save percentage recorded in 2012-13 for Sunderland. It must be remembered that Mignolet started shakily on the opening day against Stoke, but under increased amount of pressure from supporters, Mignolet has maintained the previously high level of performance that brought him to the club in the first place.
The impact Simon Mignolet has made thus far goes beyond statistics. He forms a calm presence as the last line of defence; slowly and steadily winning over doubters. He may have recorded a pass percentage of 54% on the opening day of the season; but it was the last minute penalty double save off Jon Walters that proved to be the ultimate difference between victory and defeat. His astonishing triple save off Luke Shaw and Steven Davis provided the gloss to the scoreline against Southampton, on a day when the Reds looked second best.
Not all smooth sailing
The Belgium international, however, is not the second coming of Gordon Banks (at least not yet). While he excels in his primary responsibility of stopping shots on goal, it has not always been smooth sailing. Aside from the obvious differences in profile of the clubs, making the move to Liverpool meant that the Belgian would not be as busy as he was at Sunderland. Hence, keeping his concentration throughout 90 minutes, even when Liverpool exert dominance over the opposition, is the key to accumulating clean sheets. Failure to deal with a shot from the edge of the box off Emmanuele Giaccherini made 3-1 win over Sunderland a lot harder than it should’ve been; while conceding to a long range attempt on goal from Yohan Cabaye was eminently avoidable. Also, while Mignolet is fairly good at dealing with concerns; however, Liverpool’s issues in dealing with set pieces indicate that there is room for improvement in commanding the area around him.
Simon Mignolet has also not been the most comfortable player with the ball at his feet. While mistakes made on the ball during the opening game against Stoke City could be attributed to nervousness on debut; Southampton’s high pressing up the pitch unsettled him. The fact that Liverpool attempted to build attacks from the back did not help either, as the Belgian often kicked the ball out or passed it to a defender who already had a man marking him closely.
That being said, Liverpool are trying to mix it up. The occasional long clearance (or throw) from goal can be used to counter teams that press high up the pitch. The long throw to Luis Suarez to set up the winning goal is an example of how quick thinking and passing with purpose from the goalkeeper can work to devastating effect on the counter. If the Belgian could further improve this aspect of his game, the effectiveness of his distribution can rival that of Pepe Reina.
All said and done, goalkeepers are not out there to play hokey pokey (thanks David Hershey). A goalkeeper’s primary job is that of a shot stopper – and Mignolet is an excellent one. One-third of the season has been completed, and the Belgian goalkeeper has shown thus far that he is more than capable of filling the boots of Pepe Reina at Anfield. Nothing highlights the importance of the job Simon Mignolet does for Liverpool more than the first save he made off Romelu Lukaku at Everton. One must not forget that Hugo Lloris came off his line in a similar fashion in a similar position at the same ground not long ago. We all know what happened to him.
The fact that Liverpool supporters are known to applaud opposing goalkeepers to the Kop end is proof of the amount of respect goalkeepers get at Anfield. Not long ago, Rafa Benitez took the unpopular decision of dropping a Champions League winner for Pepe Reina – that didn’t work out too badly. Brendan Rodgers’ took a similar decision in Simon Mignolet and has been rewarded thus far; as the Belgian has shown enough to indicate that he is, in fact, the real deal.
