Not that it always comes easily. There are times when it will be fiercely tested. Your old hero, a man of impeccable class, a midfielder of unmatchable ability and integrity is now approaching the twilight of his career. You know the steely No, 8 doesn’t have too many more seasons to play. What comes after? Who will you adore worship once he has played his last touch of the football that he commands so well?
A New Hero Emerges
Lo’, up steps a new hero! A different kind of player, a young conjurer who startles you with his incredible ability to make magic, to create chances where there seem to be none, to go past players as if they were one of those idle orange cones lying around a training ground. He’s a player who, when he plays, reminds you of a child’s enthusiasm for the game; the passion to chase every loose ball, the wish to protest every little decision, and the hunger to do more and more on the pitch.
In-congruence
But here lies a dilemma. As much as you’d like to believe it, the new maestro is really nothing like the old hero. The old idol has been a walking talking symbol of an ideal footballer. Never an idiotic word uttered, never a transgression against another player after a rush of blood to the head. He is a living example of an exemplary footballer and leader.
But the new hero is nothing if not absurdly human. He dives, kicks and cries like every other ‘regular’ player, sometimes even more. You realize that all his child-like enthusiasm comes with a child-like mannerism at times.
The Bite
And then one day he does the unthinkable. Commits an act so mind-numbingly immature, that you find yourself condemning him just as much as everyone else. You find yourself in a position where, for the first time ever, you simply won’t jump forward to defend one of your club’s players.
It’s at this crossroads that Liverpool fans find themselves. Luis Suarez must be condemned for what he has done. His ‘actions’ have no place in the world of football that we love. If he gets banned for the rest of the season, there should be no complaints from the Reds’ fans; he surely deserves it.
But that being said, it is important that he should not be abandoned either. One needs to remember that the one common tie between this flawed neo-hero and the old idol: they have both been committed to the cause of their club. Liverpool FC. It’s their love for the club, so evident when they step on the pitch, that has been the reason why they are so loved by the fans.
You Will Never Walk Alone
If Liverpool Football Club decide to get rid of Suarez, the fans should quietly bid him adieu and move on. If they decide to support him, the same fans need to get behind 100%. For all their greatness and their flaws, your heroes will never be more important than your club. That is where all your faith must lie.
