With clubs often needing reinforcements in the Winter Transfer Window, TheHardTackle looks at PSG winger Jeremy Menez who has time and again been linked with a move to Liverpool and whether it would be a right choice for Rodgers to pursue the Frenchman.
Jeremy Menez, a player who might give any Reds fan shivers uncannily reminding them of a certain Craig Bellamy in his prime, has been linked with the Anfield club for a while now. Priced at A?10 million, the French footballer is versatile in his style of play and can play as a winger and as forward, depending on the requirements of the team.
Menez had a very good run at Roma at the end of which he was targeted by a number of clubs including Arsenal and Manchester United but decided to move back to his country and join the club he supported as a child. He had two good seasons with the club where he managed to a fair amount of goals and assists. Despite his bust-up with Ancelotti, Jeremy Menez enjoyed a lot of praise for his style of playing when he was managed by the Italian. He managed eight goals and eleven assists last season under Ancelotti.
This season, however, the 26 year old hasn’t exactly had a good season with PSG. Missing out on the first five league matches with injuries, Jeremy Menez has still just managed three starts for the club since his return. Three of his six appearances have come from the bench. Credit should be given to him for having hit the back of the net in two of the three starts. There is no denying a dip in form and confidence, perhaps because he is still recuperating from injury coupled with the fact that he does not enjoy the faith of his manager. Menez has also clearly fallen behind Javier Pastore in his coach’s plans, and has consequently lost his place in the France squad.
What has made this season worse is his Ai??fall out with PSG manager Laurent Blanc. After warming up for several minutes, the former France defender and manager did not use him in the Champions League match against Benfica. Jeremy Menez showed his frustration by heading to the dressing room before his team-mates and walking moodily away from the stadium. Blanc responded with a ‘no comment’ when asked about this particular incident.
Liverpool’s attraction with the former Roma player has been not one which has evaded the headlines. Liverpool has been linked with the player for two of the three windows in Rodgers’ short time as manager of the club. The 2013 summer window has been one which in particular has made Rodgers’ courtship of the player a public one. During the course of this campaign, rumours have resurfaced over and over of Liverpool placing a possible bid for the PSG man in the winter or at the end of this season when the player would be available for free as his current contract with Ligue 1ai??i??s leader run out at the end of the season.Ai?? However, it has also emerged that PSG will be unwilling to let the player walk out of the club for free and hence are considering bids for Menez in the winter (Juventus are apparently already in talks with the Ligue 1 club).
Strengths
The offensive talents of Jeremy MenezAi??have never been doubted by anyone. He is an athletic player who like previously mentioned is analogous of Craig Bellamy, when the ex-Liverpool player was on top of his game. Menez is very fast and while the term has been used very generously these days by journalists, he is one player who is extremely quick both with and without the ball on his feet. Easily piercing players with his pace and technical abilities, he also poses the added advantage of having played with and against quality players. He has partnered players like Francesco Totti and Zlatan Ibrahimovic and has the experience of playing in the Champions League.
He has also represented his nation at all the levels including playing in the highest level gaining 22 international caps including representing his nation in the Euro 2012 (scoring against Ukraine). He is a member of the group, commonly known as theAi??GAi??nAi??ration 1987 that produced French internationals like Ben Arfa, Benzema and Nasri. The experiences he has at the highest level only poses as an added advantage for the club he is playing for. His passing ability is also praise worthy and he provides a lot of key passes for the forwards he is playing alongside. His flexibility in being able to play as an attacking midfielder, on either wings (favourably left) and as a forward also poses as an extra advantage.
Weaknesses
Jeremy Menez’ weakness is primarily his inconsistency as a player. His form has often dipped after having good four or five continuous games. His scoring rate also does not boast of anything special as the Frenchman is far from being a prolific threat for the opposition when it comes to netting the ball. The eight goals he scored last season is his best tally in a season.
The only other baggage the 26 year old carries is his indiscipline, being a centrepiece of bust ups. He has had a fall out with Blanc and Ancelotti in two years at PSG and with Vincenzo Montella when he played for Roma.
Do Liverpool need Jeremy Menez?
The question of how Jeremy Menez would fare at Liverpool remains a highly dicey one. The odds of him succeeding or being mediocre are both high and hence he remains a huge gamble for the club. However, getting the player for free at the end of the season will remove the risk. But reports of Juventus and Inter Milan both being highly interested in the player have surfaced time and again and the two Italian giants could snap up his signature at the end of the window.
He has enough talent alone to be worth his 10 million price. Jeremy Menez could definitely add a lot of strength to the weak left wing Liverpool has right now. Victor Moses is the player who is primarily occupying that spot and the Chelsea loanee has not really added any considerable hazard in the position. Menez could prove to be pivotal in helping Liverpool continue the bright form in the remainder of this season helping the club to a top 4 place (also keeping Suarez in Liverpool). The ex-Monaco player also has a lot of experience playing at the top level and he can add the Liverpool team which has been out of European football for a while now could benefit from it. The youth ranks of Liverpool could greatly benefit from a player like Menez playing for the club and young players like Ibe and Sterling too could learn a lot from him.
Rodgers has sometimes got it right with the players he has bought – Coutinho, Mignolet, Toure and Sturridge leading that list. But sometimes the manager has also made a fool of himself by getting players like Borini, Aspas and Allen to the side. It depends on the Northern Irishman to take the risk of getting Menez to Liverpool. The amount of stories in the media has given fans the hint that the Reds manager is probably going to bid for the PSG player. However, Liverpool fans should not be disappointed if the player is snapped up by another club as he is definitely not a “must get” or a rare breed. Rodgers has scouted good players in the past and he has the potential of surprising us again and getting another good find in the window. Menez’ arrival would be a good one but missing out on him should not be considered a huge loss.
